"It could just be food poisoning. I mean, vampires can get sick, right? You guys are still living creatures, just you like blood more than meat," said Harrigan. "Do you want me to get some kind of healer? The centaur herd may have someone equipped with knowledge on human healing."

"You may be right and it could be food poisoning but maybe we should get it checked out?" I was desperately hoping to be checked over by a healer. Maybe it was nothing.

"Where though? Do you want to try my herd? They'd probably be able to judge if it's serious. I doubt the forest has any healers," said Harrigan. "Is there anywhere in the vampire or human world you could go and come back from safely?"

"Honestly? I'm not so sure. Maybe we should stay within the forest and ask your herd. Who knows what trouble will happen if we leave the forest?" Okay that was a lie, I could have gone to my healer but she'd have told Daddy and if my suspitions are correct then I can't do that.

"Alright, let's head to the herd, do you want to ride?" he asked, offering Lexie a hand.

"Are you sure? Afterall it was only the other day that your back was all cut up." I asked him, feeiling unsure about whether I should or not.

"I've been lifting bodies all day, I think I'm alright. You're a miracle worker sunshine," said Harrigan cheerfully. "So, sunshine, can you go out in the sun? I've only seen you in the shadows of the trees."

Lexie had to laugh. "Of course i can go out into the sun. My Mum's a human so it cancels out the vampire light/dark thing. Weird I know but it serves it's purpose. I wouldn't have gotten you those burger recipes otherwise" I teased.

"So, you're like, a half-vampire?" asked Harrigan, confused. "Does that even work?"
As he questioned her, the two strolled towards his herd's grounds.

"I know that it's ever so confusing but there's a code of Vampires. The lamia Codex. Basically you have humans that are bitten. Half-borns (me) that are born from the bitten person. Pure-vamps that are born from 2 vampires Super-strengthed Humans, this is what would happen to a child of mine if I didn't marry another Vampire.

"That's sort of similar to centaurs. We can only breed with horses or women, or other centaurs. Usually a typical pregnancy lasts a year for centaurs. So women or mares carrying the child keep it longer than normal. If it's a male that is. Centaurs can only be born male from other creatures. If it's a girl it follows the regular female pregnancy schedule. Very few centaurs have women for mothers anymore. Women don't handle the pregnancy well. If you do have a woman for a mother, it's considered good luck. It's complicated, but a centaur's goals are to have foals. We also have female centaurs, but they're rare. My mother was one. A centaur born from a male and female centaur is considered a blessing,," explained Harrigan.
"Do vampires have things like that?"

"Not technically, if we give birth to a male then the birth will last for 4 months but if it's a female then it's 2 months. There's a magic/blood thing that happens. I can't really remember the technical terms of it all."

"Is there prejudice among vampire clans? I mean, we centaurs have it, is it there with you guys?" asked Harrigan, awed by the easy flow of conversation. He was barely thinking about how she'd looked last night, or what had happened. Back of the mind! He banished those thoughts away as he smiled at her.

"Honestly? I have absolutely no idea. Apart from my Father, twin brothers and now Calla, I've never met another Vampire. My Father is VERY protective of me because I'm the only girl and I was there when my Mu- err I didn't say that. Forget I said anything" I said quickly as I tried to run away but Harrigan kept a tight hand on my arm, making it so that I couldn't run.

"I'm not asking any questions, sunshine," he said kindly, "You can let me know when you want to talk. So what is your mum like then?"

I turned to face Harrigan when he asked what Mummy was like. "I can't really remember, I was only 5 when she died protecting me. I never got the chance to know her".

"I'm sorry," said Harrigan kindly, his own facd closing off at the memories of his mother. "My mother was murdered by my father thirty years ago. Nobody knows why he did what he did."

"Not for many years though, I have months to go, eons really. Besides, I'd have no idea what to do with foals. I mean, I never had the best father figure," trailed off Harrigan. "Let's go that way."

Lucinda trilled in agreement. "Thank you, Fawkes. I'm so glad you came." she nuzzled him as a sign of thanks. She sighed a little. "We should probably start the gathering soon enough. We need to mourn our dead. It can't be put off any longer."
Fawkes nodded, a hint of sadness in his eyes. Why hadn't he come sooner? Damn Kanagaroos, he had tired himself out and rendered himself useless to help Lucinda and the Forest when it really mattered. "How many fatalities do we have?"

"Thirty-seven." Lucinda said, her voice going cold again. "Over half of them were the acromantulas and runespores, but almost everybody suffered a loss."

Fawkes gave a sigh, Thirty-Seven was Thirty-Seven too many. "Are the Acromantula's going to join the funeral? Last I've met one, they didn't seem keen on mixing with others."

Lucinda shook her head. "No, they most likely won't. From what I can tell, they are very private creatures. And yes, I would have preferred it if nobody had died. Unfortunately, that is the cost of war."

Nodding his head, Fawkes had only one more question. "All right then. When and where are the creatures to gather?"

"Do you think I could see the healer on my own? It's just that I'm a little self conscious about these kind of things", there that should keep him off my back for a little while.

"In the center of the forest. In fact, I'll be singing this to everyone from here - the whole forest should be able to hear me." And with that, she sang:
"Come, my friends, to the center of the forest. The time has come to lay your loved ones to rest."
