"We bumped into each other in town." Joshua smiled. "There was a crowd, somebody pushed her over, I helped her to get out."

"Of course," said Johnny, biting back a smile, "She does have a tendency to be knocked over by air."
"I do not!" said Amelia, turning red as she glared at her brother. Johnny simply smirked back at his sister.
"So, you two claimyou're friends then?" asked Kent.

"I do not," said Amelia, glaring at Joshua as she blushed.
"Please, even the twins walk better than you dear," said Vicky with a laugh.
"I have a little bit of a balance issue," argued Amelia, "I'm not that bad!"
"Oh enough," said her mother, rolling her eyes, "You all can argue this topic until the cows come home! What did you two dears do all day then?"

Joshua laughed as Amelia blushed. "Amelia decided to teach me how to swim today. She's a very good teacher."

"You went swimming?!" asked an incredulous Kent, as Johnny glared. Father looked surprised, but otherwise didn't say anything.
"Yes, we did," said Amelia, biting into her stew and allowing the creamy broth to settle in her mouth.
"B-but you-he-you
"Oh shush Kent, they're so sweet! And I had a clear view of them from the window, they were by the lake!" said Vicky, glaring at her husband. "It's fine if they swam! So, do you plan to become a Knight or something Joshua?"

"I'm not quite sure yet." Joshua shrugged. "I'm joining the witch hunters first, I'll have to see how that goes."

"What a wonderful decision!" exclaimed Amelia's mother, beaming at Joshua, "Robby's joining too, you know! We're so proud of him!"
"It is a rather good career," said Amelia's father grudgingly, "Witches are rather foul. 'Bout time someone did something for them."
"I'd have joined if I wasn't marrying Evelyn next month," said Johnny with a musing smile, "I'm going to be their eldest son-in-law, and training to take over the bakery."
"I would have too, if I didn't have a family," said Kent with a grin, "Could you imagine it? Riding horses, chasing witches, and flirting with pretty women."
"Excuse me!?" asked Vicky, a dangerous edge to her voice.
"Not to mention the satisfaction of bringing those cretins to be burned!" said Johnny, ignoring Kent's feeble attempts to apologize to his wife. "But yeah, you'd get some of the loveliest dames. What kind og girl wouldn't marry a witch hunter?"
"If they're pigs like you two, then we definitely wouldn't, right Amelia?" asked Vicky hotly, turning to her sister in-law.
Amelia had spent the majority of the conversation looking down at her soup. It was moments like these she wished she wasn't a part of her family, or that she'd been born normal. Her body had instantly frozen at their words. It was like they were reaffirming her beliefs that they'd hate her. Not that she'd ever doubted it, but to hear them say it, well, it gave an entirely different sense of loss. Amelia felt so disjointed, and then snapped back to the conversation.
"Yeah," she said weakly, "But it's dangerous, won't it be?"
"Who cares about the danger when you can have the adventure of your life?! Not to mention watching those miserable bastards die out," said Johnny with an eye-roll, "Isn't that right Joshua?"

Joshua watched Amelia carefully, watching as she began to look more and more upset.
"Exactly! The bravery, the adventure... i'll enjoy it."

"Speaking of Witch Hunters, it looks like Robby's making his way up the hill," said Amelia's mother, as she grabbed her bowl and took it to the windowsill. She'd clean them in the lake water in the morning.
"Amelia's brother. Robby's joining the hunters too," said her father proudly, "Making his old man proud."
"Watch out Joshua," said Vicky with a chuckle, "If you though Kent was bad, Robby's ten times worse."
"He really is," murmured Amelia to Joshua, "Just duck."

As if on cue, in flew Robby. The wind had blown his hair, and it flew around him wildly. His dark eyes were full of life. He was tall, and his shirt was loosely flowing around him. He wore a white tunic with black hose, and around his waist was a black belt with a coin purse attached. The large male looked quite youthful, and of all the brothers, he was probably the most handsome. He had the kind of face that women would adore, and seemed reckless and confident as he strutted in.
"Turnips! Rylan's selling turnips! Of all the produce, he chose to sell turnips!" said Robby with an air of drama, "The horror! Could you imagine me selling turnips?"
"I'll shove one in your mouth if you don't shut up and eat," said Vicky, snapping at the eighteen-year old.
"Tut tut, Vicky! It's kindness that makes the world go around, and if we don't have that with the family, then who'll give us any?" asked Robby with a grin, as he looked at the table. His eyes settled on Joshua, and he looked confused. "He's not family. Who's he?"
"He's my friend," said Amelia, pushing aside her soup, her appetite gone from the earlier conversation.
"Friend? He? What?" asked Robby quietly, staring at Joshua with narrowed eyes, "I've never seen him before."
"Joshua, this is Robert, my older brother," said Amelia, ignoring Robby, "Robby, this is Joshua Herdsman, he's a friend of mine."

"Amelia has friends in town?!" cried Robby, "Since when?! You don't go into town without me!"
"Yes I do!" snapped Amelia, "And so what if I have a friend from town!?"
"He's a boy!" said Robby, "Boys don't befriend girls for the sake of friendship!"
"Robby!" cried mother in a warning tone.
"Not everyone is like you Robby," argued Amelia, sighing inwardly. Robby and her just never seemed to talk pleasantly.
"He's the Earl's son, Robby, he has class, unlike you!" said Vicky with a glare at Robby.
"I have plenty of class! Ask Jolene and Maryann! I was with them today too!" said Robby with a pout.
"Are you done?" asked Amelia, eyeing Robby, who wasn't even bothering to hide his glares at Joshua.
"How long has he known you anyways that he's already meeting the family?" hissed Robby.

"Wouldn't mess with a girl that way my ass," muttered Robby, sitting down where his mother had been and accepting the bowl of soup. "Every guy says that. Kent said it to Vicky's parents! Johnny said it Helen's parents and then Evelyn's!"
"And look at the result, a happy marriage," quipped Vicky.
"Marriage?!" yelled Robby, "She's too young for that!"
"I can decide this for myself, Robby!" said Amelia, glaring at her brother, "And you have no say in who I choose to marry!"
"He's the Earl's son. He marries a Lady anyways. Not common folk," said father calmly, "So they're anyways just friends as it is. Now act like a civilized being."
"I'm done dinner, are you Joshua?" asked Amelia, hoping to escape.
"Why does it matter if he's done?" asked Robby, glaring at the two.

"To the barn! It's a bit chilly, so take some shawls, but you can show Joshua the barn!" said Vicky, helping Amelia escape.
"The barn!?" cried Robby, standing up, and knocking his soup onto his father.
"Robby!" yelled father, glaring at his son as the hot soup fell on him.
"Oh shit! I'm sorry dad!" cried Robby, as Vicky jumped up to grab a cloth, and informing Kent to watch the twins, who excitedly threw their cold soup of Johnny. In all the confusion, Amelia grabbed Joshua's hand, and pulled him away and out the door from her crazy family.
"So, what did you think?" she asked when they got outside.

"Not really," she admitted, sighing as she wrapped her arms around herself and looked back to her house. Amelia's hair floated in the cool breeze, and she seemed to be struggling to find the right set of words, "It's just, hard. They're not the kind of people to really understand what I'm going through, you know? And if they did learn, well, sometimes I just really don't know what I'd expect from them."

"Probably nothing," lied Amelia, not sure if she should tell Joshua the truth as she opened the barn door and the two entered. It was a small barn with two horses, four cows, and a few dumb chickens running around. They had just sold their sheep. "Or, well, I don't know. I was thinking about leaving maybe."
