"I personally have had the guilty pleasure of indulging myself with Kiwi. Such a delightful fruit, thought my little Irene simply refuses to take it, due to her brother telling her of how it's juices can split your tongue if you eat too much." Herbert rolled his eyes as his gullible girl, who stuck her tongue out at her father as she munched on her wonderful onions.
"And you, Alice?"

Smiling at the man who addressed her, Alice reminded herself that he was Irene's father though for the life of her she couldn't remember his name. Though she wished desperately to be at home, she knew it would be better if she at least tried to make an effort at conversation.
"I must admit I too have a guilty pleasure, sir," Alice said, her smile still on her face. "The dark meat of the turkey is my absolute favorite part of the bird. Father has to buy two birds just so he can get some as well."
Flushing as she revealed more than she thought she needed to, Alice asked, "Is Kiwi good sir? I confess I've never tried it."

Helena chuckled softly at the odd little conversation struck up between their group. She bounced Sirius on her lap as she reached for some walnuts, munching on the nut with a smile as she listened to the conversation. Sirius was busy moving the arms of his soldier, playing some sort of invisible game. Helena sighed as she glanced at the group.
"Kiwi is delicious," she agreed, "Though I find myself only able to partake in small amounts. As with pineapple. Please Alice, help yourself to some of the turkey. There is plenty here."
As she said so, she turned to Herbert quite suddenly, and asked, "You're children attend Hogwarts, do they not? I've been meaning to get some opinions on education. Sirius is still young, but I'd like to know what sort of things I should prepare him for, and what kinds of skills children need before attending. I hear they've made Herbology a mandatory part of the curriculum? In my day, it was an extraneous subject."

As Helena voices her opinion of the fruit, Herbert nodded enthusiastically. He made to respond, however he was forestalled as Helena turned to him and made an inquiry.
"At the moment, only Irving is attending hogwarts. This is his fourth year, he in fact stayed at hogwarts over christmas break, opting to spend the holiday with a few friends. When he first went, he knew basic arithmetic and grammar, along with our family history. He's worked out alright- one of the best in class, and he's in Ravenclaw. Hogwarts is quite a prestigious school and one I would recommend- all three of my children will be going through their curriculum."
As Helena mentioned Herbology as extraneous, Herbert frowned. "Extraneous? Never! Herbology is essential when working with potions- making the subject essential if you want to excel in any sort of potioneering, medicine and many branches of magical research. The Auror's have quite a lot of use for the subject as it is necessary to identify potentially dangerous plants and potions along with quickly provide antidotes if need be. Herbology is also very useful for the household- cooking, cleaning and healing the occasional minor injury.
I myself actually most enjoyed Herbology and Potions class; in fact that is now my field, I research the uses of plants in potions. The subject gets a bad reputation because of it's association with muggle gardening- a much more mundane and bland activity. Herbology is much more intricate and interesting- not at all extraneous." Then Herbert grinned, "Sorry, I've gone off on a bit of a tangent, haven't I?"

Reaching for the bird, Alice smiled as she put more pieces on her dish. Helping herself to some of the fruit that was offered as well, she kept quiet as the subject changed to school subjects.
Merlin she hadn't thought about Hogwarts since she left. But Irene's father made everything sound so fascinating; more so than what her professors had done.

"Fascinating," said Helena, voicing Alice's thoughts as she listened to Herbert's lecture on the subject. Even Sirius had stopped playing with the soldier to listen to Herbert, apparently mesmerized. Nodding at his opinion, "Which subjects would you recommend starting at a young age to get a good grasp in school? Alice, you know the teachers better I suppose, any suggestions?"

"Other than basic arithmetic and english?" Herbert's eyebrows knitted together as he considered such; the man had never really given his children much specialized instruction, preferring to leave it too the school. His hired care takers provided the basics that the children would need, but he'd never gone further.
"Honestly I think it would be helpful if you allowed him to assist you in making any basic potions so that he can get an idea of the procedures and an understanding of the common ingredients. If you are able to trust him with a hand temporarily, then a few simple charms would come in handy to allow him to get in touch with his magical core before school. Don't worry too much about it though; muggle borns, many half-bloods and a good amount of pure-bloods are never taught anything magical before school and they don't fall behind."

As she was addressed by her hostess, Alice had to wrack her brain for classes that would be the best for young Sirius to start at a young age.
"I remember excelling in Charms when I was in school," she said; a small smile gracing her features as she remembered her school days. "Though I did have to struggle a bit near fifth year as I had a hard time recalling the basics. Perhaps learning the theory of the spells before going off to school might have helped me."
She thought some more before continuing to speak. "I'm afraid that's all I know on the subject," she said; trying to reign in her Ravenclaw desire to speak until her jaw ached, "and I'm sure Hogwarts has changed a great deal since I left five years ago."
Merlin, had it already been five years?
