Couldn't agree more. That stupid 'drug' is something that has increasingly crept up lately, from what I can tell, and it annoys me, because even my not always reliable sense for grammar is screaming in pain at that. And the 'defiantly' instead of 'definitely' - AARRRGH!
Another one I notice a lot is that most seem completely unable to distinguish 'past' and 'passed' and always use the wrong one.
And of course, there are the 'old classics' - there/their/they're, your/you're, were/where/we're, weather/whether ...
It always seems so strange when I as a non-native speaker keep finding that sort of mistakes in the texts of people who are obviously native speakers.
Another problem I have is when people use the name of a spell as verb. You do not 'AK' someone, you use the killing curse. You don't 'reducto' something out of the way, you blast it out of the way!

Right, though I see 'Delores' and 'Deloris' even more often than 'Mooney'. Sometimes I am surprised that I haven't found one story yet where even Harry's name was constantly misspelled  Hm, not really, but then, I barely even try to read any new that I stumble across. The best ones are gone anyway, the new ones are only a few chapters and I doubt they are going to go far before being deleted or abandoned. |

There's 1 named HP & the cousins Black but I'm sure I've seen it before as the title of a different fic by a different author.

Possible, but who knows if it was deliberate or accidental. I think in this fandom it's sometimes hard to come up with any original story titles, there are too many out there. I don't know that one, as far as I remember, though.

Stella, I've seen one or two who spelled it Harrie, but that was then supposed to be female Harry, and I avoid that sort of story like the plague, so they don't count.

You know, I always wonder if these people are really unable to spell, or if they only know the movies and have no idea how the names are spelt in the first place.
Oh, and while we are talking about that, I recently found an old story where the author insisted that 'Harry speaks Parselmouth' *rolls eyes*

I know it's a christmas one, has mountain rescue team, hospital, kids and sexy doctors. That's about all, I remember reading it when I was in the small box room and I moved to a bigger room last summer so who knows.

I know the feeling, have it often enough and even more so with fanfictions. You remember just a few details, but not enough of the story to identify it by the text on the dust jacket or by the summary. So you start reading something you can't really remember, and then suddenly you see a paragraph or something and go 'oh, that's the one I have been looking for forever'.

That's what I thought of another fic I had read years ago and couldn't remember author or title, and my attempts to find it again, even by searching for possible keywords in the summary, failed. Then I went over the favourites of someone, and guess what I found when I started reading a promising story? Three guesses, and the first two don't count So don't lose hope yet. |

Just seen the worst thing, a fanfic involving a character named Calla Lily. Do people seriously not know that Calla is another word for Lily? They've practically named the girl Lily Lily Potter!

It is a real name, somewhat old fashioned since it was last popular in the 1880's and hasn't really been popular since, but since the wizarding world seems to be stuck in the 19th century it might be appropriate.
Admittedly it should never be used in front of the middle name Lily because then it just sounds silly.

There must have been a book or two where that name was used, or at least I seem to vaguely remember 'Calla' or something like that. Though I am not too sure, and if, then is was probably something historical or at least older, yes. However, I am pretty sure I haven't seen it in more modern books. But you are right, considering how far behind the magical world is, the name would probably be appropriate. Besides, the names they have ... maybe it's just the fact that I am not British (or any other English speaking nationality), but some names in the books were more than a bit strange to me, too. Draco, Rabastan, Mundungus - leaves me wondering how many people were named like that. Pre-HP-series, of course.
That's what I meant, actually - not so much the name Calla in itself, but the combination with Lily. Poor kid.

A lot of the names got chosen for their meanings. I think JK decided that certain families, such as the Blacks, Malfoys and Lestranges, would have a tradition of using certain types of names for every child.
I don't know whether Mundungus has ever been used before, but Rabastan, according to the HP Wiki, is possibly a play on Rastaban, the traditional name of one of the stars in the constellation Draco, which is probably where JK got Draco Malfoy's name from. And even Rodolphus, while not exactly common, is the Latin for Rudolf.
And yes, even I, as a Brit, think some of the other names in the series, are rather strange.

That's at least in the Black family obvious, where we know more names than of any other family, yes. Some names I even have seen elsewhere, but not many, and not frequently. Rastaban? Didn't know that, but it could very well be that the name came from that source, yes. Would fit well, as Rabastan's brother married Draco's aunt. Rodolphus is one of the names I had no problem with, as the connection with Rudolf (which is used here, too, though more for the older generation) is rather clear, and I have seen variations of that in other languages. I think Rodolfo is the Italian one. It's comforting that I am not the only one to think some of the names strange  |
