This thread is turning into a language lesson for poor German me Me too except the other way around. I never knew there were such differences in the German language.

lol "Making Out" is actually one those terms that is a matter of interpretation, as it covers everything from Kissing to Heavy Petting, and in some cases depending on location, "Hitting a Home Run" is the polite way of putting it. See this is what I mean about words and I guess phrases having a different meaning throughout the states and I find it fascinating. Here in the North a 'Home Run' would be having full on sex not just heavy petting. lol that is what I meant by "Home Run" did not want to get in trouble by saying Sex as most sites have that word on disallow list. Plus tried being PG with the wording.

Me too except the other way around. I never knew there were such differences in the German language. Same here for a long time, until I ended up in a forum where people from all over Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg ... were talking in German. Had to learn that some words I thought common were distinctly south German, and learned some new ones. But I guess as long as you use High German, it's not that bad. Have you heard of 3rd base? ;D No, never!

A friend of mine lives somewhere along the border to Denmark, and he has a good High German. Maybe I should send you to him to teach you I guess, it depends on where exactly you come from. My friends who come from bigger towns and cities speak very good High German (like those from Bremen for Example). But those that come from the countryside (like I do) occasionally "slip down" and then things can get pretty difficult for people who aren't used to it. And then, of course, there are Quiddjes - people whose families moved into the area but never learned the local lingo. I have a friend who's already third generation, and she still doesn't understand the vendors on the market when they ask her what she wants to buy. *sigh* Personally, I hate dialect, but htat's mainly because it's hard enough to lip-read proper German. Dialect should be forbidden ;D Actually, the US husband of another friend of mine had to learn High German just for me - initially I didn't understand him because he was talking in such a strong Franconian dialect I love dialects. It's just totally awesome that you can listen to some completely stranger talk and then pinpoint his place of birth down to a 5 mile radius. That's simply incredible. My mother is ridiculously good at it (wish I were. *sigh*). But you raise a good point. I have no idea how deaf people up here manage... perhaps they learn to lipread both languages? I vaguely remember that an acquaintance once showed me how to move the lips "properly", so maybe it's not so much about deaf people learning how to understand our dialect, but hearing people learning how to move their lips "right"? *shrugs* I've never actually thought about that...

My home town is about 40.000 inhabitants, but I believe the townsfolk actually speaks a bit less dialect than the country folk.
Yeah, may be fun when you can understand it.
Actually, it's both - first, you have to speak clearly and a bit slower and look fully at deaf people (not like my cousin once who was digging through the refrigerator, and then complained that I didn't answer to what she said with her head in it!). Second, when you are deaf, you need to understand the language to lip-read. I know I have problems with last names and place names I don't know, and with dialect you have to know it to understand, because you have to recognise the words by the lip picture. (Which can be tricky - look at the mirror and say "eins" and "acht" normally ... looks pretty similar!) That's my problem with speaking English, too - as I don't know how to pronounce most of the words, I can't lip-read it, either.

'Making out', to me, means kissing to heavy petting. Snogging just means kissing. I know about the bases because some people do use that here but not that many.
Those 'pot pies' are what I think of as normal pies. I personally don't like any pies with fruit in. I dislike cooked fruit.

That's my problem with speaking English, too - as I don't know how to pronounce most of the words, I can't lip-read it, either. The "eins" and "acht" example doesn't work for me. I just tried it out but it looks completely different. With "eins" I pull the corners of my mouth outward as if I'm smiling, while "acht" doesn't have a broad smile attached at all. *shrugs* Concering the pies:I don't actually like pies. *dugs out of the way, so that the thrown rocks won#t hit* I absolutely hate tarts (that are those with cream and fruits and stuff, yes?) *dugs further into the hole* The only thing I occasionally eat is marble cake (I make a realyl good one myself), and the apple pie one of our local confectionist makes (it#s great because there is literally nothing but apple in it. No raisins, or spices, and what not).

What is with people thinking I'm a guy? -.-' That's twice on this forum, lol.
And yes, I don't like fruit pies. I'm not a huge lover of meat pies either but I'll eat them if that's what's for dinner. I do like the little pork pies though!
I'm very firmly on the dark side thank you! We have cookies, cake and yaoi. All I need to be happy.

Really? When it's said here, it looks pretty the same, everyone said that. (Of course, not particularly pronounced, just normally spoken). Oh well. Still annoying, it's a little difference if you are supposed to meet someone at 1 or 8.
*shakes head* Not normal. Not normal at all. No appreciation for lovely pies and cakes!

I would have though my avatar would give away that I'm a girl... Tom Felton as Draco is too cute. Maybe it's the Kyuubi sig?

That can be tricky with the genders, even more so when it's not shown in the box on the left. In my old forum we had at least two people with male nicks who were in truth female. And very few knew. It was always fun to watch how everyone else firmly believed them to be male. The best was when one of the guys complained that always only guys were on the chat and never girls. Not knowing that he was talking with nearly exclusively girls ;D

Well, for me at least it's the avatar. I see Tom Felton, and go: "Oh. A guy." And then I look further up, and see "Silvertongue", and go: "No, wait! She was a girl, right?" And at that point I always find myself checking for the little female sign underneath the avatar... Maybe, it's just me, though.

I can have my cake, pies, cookies, cupcakes, yaoi and anything else I can think of ;D You will not lure me away from the Grey! ithiarel: I check the box to find out gender too. It's a must really since avatars and even names can lead you wrong.

ROFL!!! No Thank you. I'll just change it to one of my favourite female characters, Morgana!
I always check the gender sign in the box on the left, because I know I always have quite misleading pics. This name seems more masculin than the one I had on my other forum, Leechlover.

But...but...but... pink fits so well with his black clothes. And his white-ish hair. *sniff* Finally, a colour that doesn't make him look like a ghost. ;D OOhhhh! Like the Morgana Avatar. Lots.
