Is that one a Mac? Sounds strange, never had anything like that, and I'm on my third Mac. My brother didn't mention anything about such problems, either - and I've given up to try and track his computers.

Ah, that would explain it, I guess. And not easily mended, save you could take it apart ... if it's not already too late for that Well, good luck in getting the right one!

The latter requirement would probably be the hardest ... IMO the electronic devices have a shorter and shorter life. My first laptop was still going (though slowly) after 6 years, despite falling down half the staircase and having a fissure across half of the back of the screen. The second one had a HD crash after only 5 months, ended up with trackpad problems and getting way too hot after about four years. Now I am on the third one, it's two and a half year old and I wonder how long it will survive ... only last weekend the 'r' key kept hopping out of the keyboard for no reason at all.

Honestly, if you really want a computer for your purposes, find a decent tech forum, and outline your goals. Odds are the techs on there can find a really cheap base laptop and other upgrade parts that would get you to your goals and even higher for much cheaper than buying a laptop to your goals.
