Harry and Ginny is JKR's main canon couple but is the least written about by fans. Why?

Maybe because the pairing was so underdeveloped that many can't see it happen? We barely see anything from Ginny for so long, then Harry's suddenly in love with her and we never see the relationship grow. Not to mention that she was that uber-BWL-fangirl and he hated his fame. Personally, I was just being like "WHAT??" when they suddenly got together, and I know I wasn't the only one. So, I guess for many it's more interesting to explore the love potion princess version.
At least that's the reason I see as the most likely.

I saw it coming but she really needed to do much more set up for it. I think that they are a good couple, she's strong and fiesty enough to not only fight by his side but also deal with his moods and she is probably the only one that can understand what it feels like to loose yourself to Voldermort. As for the fangirl issue I think she was over that whole "Harry Potter" obsession after COS and instead had to deal with a mixture of awe over the fact he would risk his life to save her and probably shame over being manipulated by the diary. Once she finnaly let go of that and opened up to him in OoTP I think she became the perfect partner for him.

I think the problem is that Ginny is a very underdeveloped character and sometimes it would be hard for authors to write a story with her as a key character within that story because it is hard to tell how Ginny would react in certain situations.
I really do think JKR should have done a better job letting her readers get to know Ginny before she and Harry became a couple.

I think part of the problem is that there were simply to many characters for JKR to really do justice to them all and unfortunately Ginny was one of those that simply got lost. It was a lot like in a film when a characters scenes get cut until they go from important character to random person who turns up with the solution at the end of the film.

Given that JKR knew from the first book that Ginny was going to be the one Harry ended up with i think she really should have made more of a effort to put find a way to include Ginny in PoA and GoF as she was almost non existant in those 2 books.

The problem I suppose was stopping Harry's relationship with Ginny from becoming a sibling one like his relationship with Hermione so she was kept out of it until he was ready to see her as something more.

Which didn't do anything for me. Going from annoying fangirl sister of his friend to girlfriend overnight isn't very convincing for me.

My problem is that Luna's personality mentioned more than Ginny's.

I think they have the potential to be a good couple. I just wish it was fleshed out more in the books. In my personal canon, they spent a few months or years getting to know each other better before marrying. I don't know if that was official, but that's my belief.

To me even though Harry was convinced he was in love at the end of HBP i personally think Harry was still at the point of seeing everything Ginny did as perfect and he was no where near ready to consciously acknowledge her faults as even bad things she did were twisted around to appear good. Until Harry is capable of acknowleding Ginny's faults (and Ginny is capable of acknowleding Harry's faults) then will not be truly in love.

I can see them as being in love, since before Harry dies, it's Ginny who he thinks off, but at the same time, I want to know more of how they got to that point.

I really think that JKR should have made the relationship more pronounced starting in POA and gradually build it up until DH. Instead, she basically had Ginny become a background character in books 3-4 and then slowly started to add her in the rest of the books.

I would say that the pairing is under writen about for several reasons. 1. Ginny is a basic fan girl in the first three books, so it makes it look like she only wants harry because he is the boy who lived. 2. Ginny and Harry's relationship is not explored very much. 3. She is his best friends sister and he treats Ron and the Twins as brothers so it just seems a little weird. 4. it makes harry seem like he is just rtying to become even more like his dad marrying someone who looks like his mum. This is why i think the pairing is under writen about.

Besides, what did Harry & Ginny really have in common? Sure they both like Quidditch, both had personal experience of fighting Voldemort and both were in the same house, but what else did they have in common?

I think Harry and Ginny had as much in common as Harry and Ron and Harry loved spending time with Ron.

I don't think that Harry and Ginny have as much in common as Harry and Ron, seeing as how Harry and Ron experienced a lot of things together, went on a lot of adventures together, etc.
Harry and Ginny went through some things together as well - the incident in the Department of Mysteries, the DA - but not nearly as much. Certainly, when Harry visited the Weasleys, he saw Ginny too, but until the fifth or sixth book, Ginny was like the Sidekick's sidekick.
Even if they had as much in common as Harry and Ron, though, that hardly says everything. Certainly, Harry loved spending time with Ron - if neither Ron's jealousy nor Harry's frustration and anger got in the way - as friends.
People who make a good friend aren't necessarily a good romantic partner/love-interest/etc. as well.

For things they had in common, you don't necessarily need all the same interests. They liked Quidditch, she made him laugh quite a bit, they both had experience with possession, went through a few things together. But what sets them apart is the stuff they didn't do together. I like that Ginny was never a part of the trio because it makes her someone who got stronger on her own, without Harry. It makes her still important, but separate.
What should have happened though, is maybe in POA she helps Harry sneak out once or twice. Despite her own embarrassment, she made an effort to talk to him. Then in GOF when he has problems with Cho, she could have encouraged him. He could have confided in her a little during GOF about his issue with the egg that he was hiding from Hermione and Ron, and then she'd help him sneak out to the Prefect baths. Or when he's arguing with Ron and has no one to discuss Quidditch with, she could have been there. Then in OOTP, the transition from fan-girl to friend would be complete. She should have stood up to his argument at the beginning with Ron and Hermione. Then she could have shown some care for Hedwig too. She'd lead Harry on the train like in OOTP. Later on she'd help Hermione get him into the DA, but he'd find out she's dating Michael, and feel uncomfortable, like Ron does. But he'd be more occupied with Cho to dwell on it. Everything else happening would be normal, maybe another conversation about Ron's Keeping abilities, and her seeking abilities, a plan to encourage Ron, or she'd help him with something else, like his detention thing, maybe she'd find out first. Finally, in HBP, after his Cho fiasco, he'd realize he liked Ginny, during the school year when he sees her kissing Dean. Then the transition would be complete. That's how the relationship should have been fleshed out. We'd see her a bit, see her in those specks, but come to like her rebellious attitude, like her for supporting Harry, etc.

Yes, if JKR had done it like that, I'd have much less problems with the relationship. It just came too much out of nowhere for me to feel right.

I agree with you both, gnovella and Kitty. The way it happened in canon was, well...
1. Let's introduce a fangirl. 2. Let's have Harry save her during her first year. 3. Ignore her for a looooong time despite the fact that she's a Weasley, the wizarding family he spends a lot of time with. 4. Let's reintroduce the fangirl as someone who apparently grew up during her absence, without showing much of that actual growing up. 5. Now, Harry falls in love with her out of the blue and we're all supposed to love her too.
Yes, I am aware that it's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's roughly what it felt like to me.

Men always marry their mothers right? (like when Ron had dirt on his nose and Hermione pointed it out...I know it then ehehe)
But in the books, when Harry saves Ginny, I feel after that her feelings started to change. Yes he saved her and made her BWL fantasy come true, but when he tried to restrain from mentioning her involvement, she finally sees him as something more that her childhood crush.
I feel the CoS changed her. A lot. She saw there was darkness in the world, and that Harry wasn't just a hero to be worshipped. She started seeing him as a friend, which we don't see in book three or four.
In fifth year, even though Harry liked Cho, he was starting to see her in a different light. In the DA she held her own against her brothers, and I think when she went to the DoM was the beginning.
Maybe I read too much fan fiction (psh there's no such thing as too much fan fiction)...but i think they're a great couple.
Movie Ginny, maybe not. Book Ginny most definitely.

I really think that the big problem in the relationship between Harry and Ginny is that a big part of the beginning (the summer before HBP) is omitted. Before the summer he and ginny were friends, perhaps even good ones but obviously something changed in this short span.

If the relationship had been fleshed out, I wouldn't have minded the pairing.

I really like the pairing but big parts come from the good fanfiction stories that I read about them were parts like the summer before HBP, the time they spent together or after Hogwarts were developed nicely

Exactly. That's how I feel. Fanfiction fills in the gaps between books so their relationship is more developed in the fanfiction world.

I think Harry and Ginny had as much in common as Harry and Ron and Harry loved spending time with Ron. Well they both handled injustice and grief by fighting against it then cry over it. They both hate to be underestimated by others. They both have shown to have quench of thirst to prove themselves. They both know that there are few things that are more important than their own relationship. They both stood up for right things. They both help weak and underestimated people. They both hate cheesy and over the top romance. They both have an adventurous streak in them. They both seem to prefer living life at edge.
