Since he spent 12 years in Azkaban with dementors, I think alcohol wouldn't affect him as much as it did others.

Dementors have a different affect. They're more mental than physical. Once your body starts to crave the alcohol, it's harder to break the habit. With the mental detriments of Azkaban and the physical affects of the alcohol...

I have to agree that Sirius would have been able to pull himself together once he was free and he did prove himself to be a responsible parental figure to Harry. I don't think he would have been any kind of liability to Harry and could have only done him good. I have to agree with gnovella in regards to Molly though. There is no way Ron would tell Molly about the troll or the acromantulas or anything else as he would definitely fear her wrath and I'm sure whatever he told her about the traps in the 1st book was watered down. As to him not being able to stop himself from telling her I think the second book proved he is capable of keeping secrets as the twins would not have trusted him to stick with the story that Harry showed up during the night (as stupid as that was)if they thought him unable to keep thing's from their mother. And in OoTP he was able to keep the fact that he and his siblings knew more than they were supposed to thanks to the extendable ears as well as keep the twins secret that they were still working on inventions and plans to open up their own joke shop...OH! and also in the fourth book he didn't tell Molly when he thought the twins were blackmailing someone. I can't think of anything else right now but yeah I highly doubt Ron would have told his mother about the dangerous situations he put himself in and watered down events when discussing things Dumbledore or maybe McGonagall had informed her about.

While I have to admit I honestly don't want to imagine Sirius being addicted to alcohol physically, it is possible. I just think someone who had suffered more is less likely to break down and can take more things than ordinary people so I personally is willing to give him more credit:)
But as you've said, physical and mental affect are there and should not to be ignored casually, so I think both possibilities are reasonable.
And yeah I also think Molly knew nothing from Ron since, well, how many teenage boys share their school life (exciting/dangerous or not) with their parents? Definitely not many, and I don't think Ron would be among them.
P.S. Oh talking in a language that is totally different from my mother tongue is so tiring and I'm not sure I've expressed myself rightly. Hope what I said make sense.

Would Dumbledore really know better, or was he so enamoured with his own fame that he thought he knew best? The latter! No doubt about it. gnovella, you do have some points, I will admit, but I will say this. By the end of OotP, Sirius was beginning to get himself together a bit. Yeah, he was fucked up ... he has a right to be! But if he had survived OotP, and *especially* if he had been cleared of wrongdoing in the aftermath of him fighting with the Order against the Death Eaters, and gotten the help he so desperately needed, He'dve been a hell of a force to reckon with on Harry's behalf. Even hamstrung by being a wanted criminal, he had done everything he could up to that point to help Harry and be there for him. *nods in agreement* If he could have been cleared and get out again, that would have helped immensely. What was so hard for him was being locked up in that house, after all! Besides, I don't know for sure if he was drinking all the time or only occasionally. Would make a big difference.

That's all fine and dandy, but recall how much recovery time he's had: Directly after going to Peter's house and finding it abandoned, he goes to the Potters' house to find James and Lily dead. He knows it was Peter's information that killed them and blames himself because it was his idea to change Secret Keeps without telling anyone.
Then, Hagrid comes and takes Harry to Dumbledore. So now Sirius has nothing holding him back from being his normal impulsive self and going after Peter. So he goes after the friend he's known for at least nine years who immediately starts accusing him, something Sirius probably half-believes.
When Peter cuts and runs (literally), and Sirius gets nabbed instead, he knows that he's going to be tossed in Azkaban. He's a Black, there are witnesses saying that Peter accused him, everyone thinks he's Secret Keeper, etc. So then, he doesn't even get a trial and is thrown into Azkaban for twelve years.
So he's got twelve yeas to think about his friends' death/betrayal (and I doubt Dementors everywhere helped). He finally gets out, goes on the run, finds Harry, and immediately has to go on the run some more. He's then locked up in the place he *ran away from!* and told he's useless. (Way to go, Snape).
So he was thinking clearly enough in the fourth book, that was *before* he was locked up in his childhood home and told he couldn't do anything to help. He's definitely going to need more than a few months to recover. He's went through some bad things and they were all immediately after each other with maybe two or three good things scattered throughout.
Though, considering, he could have turned out much worse. Remember his cousin, Bellatrix? Can't help but wonder what she saw in there . . .

Hey now, we have no idea if Neville was forced to watch, (but its a pretty safe bet) and I for one hope he never did see that.

And that, dear children, is why inbreeding is frowned upon. I love Sirius, I really do, but with that much inbreeding? (Walburga was a Black even before she married Sirius's father) Sirius is a great guy, but inbreeding is going to mess with anyone's head. And growing up with the Blacks? He may not have an asylum room with his name on it (Bellatrix), but he's not going to be winning any 'Sanest Person of the Year' awards, either.

No kidding. I always felt bad for Merope, but at the same time . . . she and her family kinda' freaked me out. A lot.

I do wish JK had killed off Dolohov in stead of Sirius, especially after Dolohov hit Hermione with that nastyy purple curse.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. Or at least Bellatrix. Wouldn't have missed that insane psychopath, either.

I don't really know why, but I actually like Bellatrix. Maybe it's because one of my favourite stories has her less like a psychopath, but still slightly insane. www.fanfiction.net/s/3401052/1/A_Black_ComedyIt's one of the best stories I've ever seen, even though the author seems to think Harry is a playboy.

I've always admired Bellatrix for her insanity (insane characters are cool! Just look at Azula and Zim!), but never really liked her. One of my friend's adored her, though, up to the point that she cried when Ms. Lestrange died.

*snickers* I wouldn't go that far. I think what endeared her to me the most was the fact that she is played by Helena Bonham Carter. She made that character awesome.

Pfft, yeah. I couldn't imagine anyone else pulling off Bellatrix so perfectly. Not entirely sure if that's a good thing, but there you have it.

*Snorts* It probably isn't a good thing but everyone knows Helena is certifiably insane anyway, along with her husband. Doesn't stop her from being a wonderful actress!
