Just started using the flagfic one and so far like it as it is actually faster then the one I was using.

Sent an email to the guy who owns flagfic.com and he told me that the HTML and other versions are downloaded for life. So I guess I have a new favorite to download fics. I didn't think that flagfic.com saved anything to their own servers. When I've used it, it just saved the file directly to my computer. But it is faster and has better formatting than other versions.

I took the answer to mean the programme they offer and how they adjust to such changes on the websites they are used on. Can't imagine Flagfic saves everything people download.
But yes, it's very fast, and so far I had no issues. And I noticed that if I read one of the pdf downloads and have to close it, next time I open the file it jumps to right where I left off. No more searching for where I left off! (I'm notoriously bad with numbers, and that includes page numbers - they are usually forgotten in less than five minutes)

I normally just favorite a story... but since these crackdowns and my internet getting limited, I started to save them... Wow, am I ever glad for that. Thanks for giving me a quick way to do so!

As I said in the other thead, if you're going to use fanfictiondownloader, you should download and install the software instead of using the web-based version; the software is much more stable.

*facepalms* So, FFnet changed their layout such that Fanfictiondownloader doesn't work. Again. Until Rai gets an update out (which probably won't take long), we'll have to make do. I'm going to check if others are borked up too EDIT: www.flagfic.com still works.

and flagfic.com works better anyway, because it gets all the special characters right.

If you were trying to use the webbased version, then that's your problem. I don't really like flagfic, I'm just not used to it and I find the text to be way too large...

I've been doing the same as you with fanfictiondownloader.com and saving it as a .pdf

I'm saving them into e-pub and then reading them with calibre.

I think the confusion lies in the difference between the fanfictiondownloader.net/ link and the and fanfictiondownloader.appspot.com/. The first is a downloadable file and has a web-based version that doesn't work. The second link is the web-based version that works but the special characters don't come out right. They have nothing to do with each other.

Ah. Fair enough. Well FFDL has a new version out now, you'll need to update your version to use it.

I never tried the downloadable version. I meant that the web-based version on the same site doesn't work, and that had nothing to do with the fanfiction.net updates.
The appspot link by nearly the same name stopped working because of the updates, and never did get the hang of the special characters.

DeFFNetIzer won't work unless there's an update soon since FF.net changed the layout.

Do they take up bandwidth? Like: Downloaded Uploaded Your usage MB MB Percent used % % That type of thing. A usage meter. DoodleJanus, now that you've mentioned the usage meter on another thread (IRC), I finally realized what you meant here. And yes, downloading stories would affect your usage. Downloading anything would affect your usage. I am assuming that you have an internet plan that puts a limit on how much you do online each month. Each individual story shouldn't take up too much bandwidth, though it could add up.

thats cool that there are sites to save fanfics, but really all you need to do to save any webpage is right click and say save as... it saves it as an html file that you can read without internet and you dont need to go through another site. also, if you are looking for online file storage, i use ADrive, it gives you 50GB completely free.

Yes, the only problem is that you wouldn't want to do that for each chapter. That's why the backup sites exist.

Well that idea is okay for the smaller stories, or one that has just started. But doing one that has 20 or more chapters would be a pain to do, not to mention the file space needed.

That would work only for the chapter you have open, right? I've saved stories of over 180,000 words in a matter of maybe 15 to 20 seconds with flagfic.com. That beats doing every chapter of a 50-chapter story hands down!

Probably best to use on fics that are on LJ or other sites unsupported by Flagfic. I know of a few that I'm gunna hafta do that with... thankfully, most of those are one shots.

True. Though, for the longer (multi-chapter) stories on LJ I was following, I early on just copied every update as it came and put it into the same word document. Didn't take long and I always had the current status of the fic and could re-read without having to dig through LJ. (Plus, when I started that, I was still on dial-up, so re-reading a 100+ chapter story online was really costing money!) That additionally makes sure I have the whole story in one file.
