There is a site designed to backup a copy of a multi-chaptered fic. You need to log in with a google user/pass to use it. You give it the link for the story (it works with fanfiction.net and also many other sites), and then choose the format and select "download." There are multiple links. It used to have something to do with older and newer versions, but I think that no longer applies. However, it does help because these apps get quota from Google, and if too much is used the app goes down temporarily. The only issue I have is that some special characters, like '...' and some ' " ' show up weirdly encoded. I haven't ever bothered to do a mapping of these weird encoding to the characters they are supposed to represent, but if it is needed, we could do that so we can do a find/replace. LINKS: fanfictiondownloader.appspot.com/fanfictionloader.appspot.com/ffd-retief-hrd.appspot.com/Polish has pointed out some more sites where you can do this: www.flagfic.com/ (will save the file directly to your pc. The formatting seems better than the links above) fanfictiondownloader.net/ The last link has two versions. The stable version is a computer program you would need to download and install - I haven't tried this. There is also an experimental web based version, but I can't get it to work. You give it a link, and it puts you in a (very long) queue, and then it times out somewhere along the way. DoodleJanus mentioned a downloadable archiver that only works with fanfiction.net (currently not working due to ff.net changes) www.deffnetizer.com/

Oooh sweet, I did not know such places existed, I have always saved it the old fashioned way of Copy/Paste/Save. So thank you for this. And it even has Epub format for my E-Reader *dances about happily*

Theres another site called fanfictiondownloader.net, and flagfic.com, that allows you to download multichaptered fics in various forms including epub, without having to log it.

that's brilliant! I'm saving Soulbooks 1 by Lyhtanie. Will let people know if I do any others. Perhaps we should keep a list here of what everyone has managed to save? That way we don't all save the one fic and waste time while others could be deleted.

I would suggest making a new thread for it. Title something like "Saved Stories" or something like that, I would just suggest people update their posts versus making a new post each time.
By the way which is better Txt or HTML format?

Text is going not not have any formatting like bold or italics at all.

so html then? It looks like you have to save it to your own comp for that? the epub didn't do that and it still had all the formatting.

Hmm just did an HTML, and if you have OpenOffice and Copy Paste it keeps the bold and other format stuff, but did still have some minor issues that are easy to fix..

It saves the file to their servers, but you really need to save a copy to your computer. They clear their files out every so often. I think it might be after the 30 day google login is over, but I could be wrong.

That shouldn't be difficult since all you would need to do would be to right-click each and "save target/link as." Might I even suggest a firefox plugin? www.downthemall.net/

I would suggest using HTML, for the most part. It is the most compatible format. You would have to have a special software to even read ePub, and a lot of PDF loses formatting when you copy/paste.

I have started just doing html, I can always port them over to ODT later if need be or possibly another extension.

Do they take up bandwidth? Like: Downloaded Uploaded Your usage MB MB Percent used % %
That type of thing. A usage meter.

Hey I'm using the fanfic downloader from ffd-retief-hrd.appspot.com/ and I have a question. When you chose the HTML format and then want to copy and paste the whole story, what writing serivce is better? I have both MS Word and OpenOffice and I want the copied version to look like the one from the HTML.

Well I dunno about MS Word but I use OpenOffice and if you copy past you get an exact replica. Only thing you need to do then is fix the mistakes the downloader makes which are all minor character issues.

I tried copying and pasting on MS Word and it just contiued to crash on me. What exactly do the character mistakes look like so I can find and correct them?

So I have been copying stories from ff.net using the app from ffd-retief-hrd.appspot.com and kept getting these characters, â€, every other paragraph. I have been using OpenOffice and just use the find and replace tab to get rid of them. I was just wondering if any one else had this same problem?

First, just put in the †characters into the find part then press find all. Second, leave the replace line blank and press replace all. Oh, and when you see this character, ¦, do the previous instructions but press the space bar when you click the replace line. I found out the hard way when I did it the first time without spacing the replace line.

I didn't realize so few people knew about fanfictiondownloaders or I would've said something... Yea, I've been using FanFictionDownloader for since September 2011 so I have quite a collection of fics built up. Some of which may have been deleted on FFnet, but I'm not sure. I may start going through and archive a lot of my favorites, or at least update them. Jo, I bet it has to do with the change in the chapter layout; whichever fanfic downloader you use can't translate it anymore. That said FanFictionDownloader 0.6.2 found at www.fanfictiondownloader.net/ seems to work fine for me. Also, it needs to be said that using these needs to be kept on the down-low as it seems to violate the FFnet terms of service to use one of these (Article 4-E)

Just tried it out, the pdf download via www.flagfic.com still works correctly. Sent an email to the guy who owns flagfic.com and he told me that the HTML and other versions are downloaded for life. So I guess I have a new favorite to download fics.
