That's why I said to a certain extent. I'm just glad towards the end she was able to see Neville as Neville and not Frank. I think what she really wanted was to see Neville shine like Frank, and when he shined on his own in a way different from her son, she began to see Neville as his own person and her grief was worked through. A part of me always believes she showed up in DH not to just fight, but to make sure that she didn't lose Neville too.
And really, those two had no excuse for what they did. I can't stand stories where they just put the blame on Vernon and say Petunia was being abused by him as well, or worse, that Petunia had no idea. Or that Petunia magically opens her eyes and becomes a good person.

Yeah. Unlike Augusta, they have no heart for anything "freakish" And I do wish Neville had been closer to Harry in the series. I think he'd have become more confident sooner, and we'd have gotten to see more of him.
And Neville might have noticed the signs of abuse/neglect a lot better than Ron or Hermione, seeing as his Great Uncle was abusive toward him. This is just wishful thinking, of course.

I mean really, Petunia showed no remorse or sadness at Lily's death is she can go around saying Lily died in a car crash while drunk!
As for Neville and Harry becoming closer, I see a lot of similarities between the two, and though they may notice the signs, it would take some outside force to make them confront each other. They're both too polite and reserved and shy. Neville more so than Harry because it took him a while to get confident, though I find him more adorable, I don't know why. Neville reminds me of a Teddy Bear, and Harry reminds me something like a wolf/eagle type deal.

I agree about Vernon and Petunia. If, for instance, Petunia was being abused by Vernon, there should be some evidence that would show and allow Harry to see that his aunt was not doing this willingly, hence allowing them to be kindred spirits in the face of him. And also, if Petunia really had no idea, why would she say such things in the book. And about her "magically opening her eyes and becoming a good person", this abuse went on for 11 years before Harry left to go to Hogwarts and I think that if she were to "become a good person" it would have happened before then, before things went so far as for her to treat one child better than the other.

Sometimes, it's as though Petunia has no soul. Not that Vernon is any better, though. He's a vile piece of scum.
You do have a point about Harry and Neville, but I do want to say that Neville does stand up for what he believes is right. He does have courage when something strong tugs at him. I think that he'd eventually talk to Harry about it. But, it wouldn't be easy for him, and he'd spend a lot of time in doubt.

I can't imagine treating my younger sister the way Petunia treated Lily. Even if me and my sister have zero things in common, I make it a point to get along with her. The idea of what Petunia did to Lily makes me want to scream. And then people forgiving her for it. I just want to slap them silly. She's not worth forgiving.
As for Neville standing up, I do think he would, but I think he'd be a bit nervous too for a while.

Yeah like when Neville stands up to Harry, Ron and Hermione in their first year. He didn't want to lose more points for his house and he did what he thought was right. Actually that is one of my favourite Neville moments throughout the series, other than the end where confronts Voldy.

She decided her newborn son was "in the way of her life" and decided not to care for him, so my older sister adopted him. But no matter how I feel about his birth parents, I adore my nephew, and that's the way it should be! When it comes to Neville, I like the redo fics where Harry encourages Neville early on to bring him out of his shell. Neville is an awesome character, and it's a shame JKR didn't have him flourish sooner.

He's such a wonderful character, really. I could even see him fitting in with the group dynamic rather nicely.

I do feel a bit sorry for Augusta but that's no excuse for treating her grandson that way. I've read stories where she wants Neville to be a carbon copy of his parents. It's no wonder he was so worried when he started school. I love Neville- he and Luna are my favorite characters. They both had a hard time in school and who helped? No one. Hogwarts needs to fix their bullying policy.

Hogwarts has a lot of things that they need to change, that just being one amongst a few. They should change their career policy as well, and start giving kids ideas on what jobs they can have later in life by year 2 (mostly due to the fact that some jobs may require some of the extra courses like Care of Magical Creatures and so forth). I won't go into more here suffice to say that they are not the best school in the world, nor are they the worst.

I agree. And as we know, Hogwarts isn't the only school, so there's no excuse! I really do like fics where reforms are set in place.

I was actually thinking of one where an illiterate muggleborn ends up at Hogwarts and a couple of students help them through all the trials of school life with this condition, all the while helping them by teaching them to read and write.

Well no one has made anything quite like it so I thought I would take a stab at it. It will show how flawed the Hogwarts education system is, while building friendship among students

*Grins sheepishly* I think that I will only deserve them once I have actually posted the story. It is still in the works so far. However I must admit that talking to you has rekindled my desire to work on it ;D

Awwww *feels special*
I love discussing the finer points of fanfiction with people. Even if I don't always agree, it's fun. I'm also a fan of discussing ideas and bouncing mine off of others.

A few hours offline and I can barely catch up! How am I supposed to do that when I am back to work? As the end of my rant "kinda" stated, SOMEBODY has to deal with her, no matter who it be. But yes I concur: Fuck Molly. Sirius is way more awesome (and I believe his temper can flare even higher than Molly's if he lets it too And even more important, Sirius seems to have been put down by his mother a lot, too, and would understand Neville much better than Molly, who isn't much better than Augusta in that regard.

Haha! Sorry Kitty, but it's the way things are...
I went up from 77 to 200-plus posts. Heehee.
I agree with that, too. If only Sirius had been innocent. I feel as though the lives of many would have been better with him around!

I know what you mean. When I returned from holiday late Sunday, I think I was around 130 posts. This one is going to be #341!
But Sirius was innocent, the stupid ministry just didn't want to believe it. To be honest, I have been playing around with a fic where the DoM incident ends a bit different - and Sirius is not only going to be exonerated, but taking care of Harry and Neville. I just have to correct some of JKR's mistakes!
