Does anyone else see this? I've seen a lot of talk about this and I have started to see what people mean. Bill runs away to Eqypt, Charlie to Romania, Percy to the Ministry and the twins dropped out of school to do start their shop (I know that it was sort of because Umbridge and they were close to home, but still....).
What do you think? Is is totally because of Molly or is there something else we are missing? If Ron and Ginny (even though she didnt until the every end) became friends with Harry, would they have gone the same way?

I blame Molly. She smothers them and belittles them at the same time. Is it a wonder they want to run away from her?

I don't think its running away to leave the family nest. As soon as I graduated college I was off to Washington DC. My stepsister also left for Boston soon after, though we both lived in New York when we grew up.

Oh yes, I always said that Bill and Charlie fled out of the country the moment they could, and Percy didn't stay at home longer than a year. The twins could have stayed at home and apparated to work, but they didn't.
Actually, I blame mainly Molly. She's way too controlling and overbearing and tries to run their life for them. Would they stay at home, she'd be forever nagging about their hair, their clothes, their jobs, their girlfriends ... she means well, but she drives them away.
Of course, for Bill and Charlie there's the adventure elsewhere, but I am sure they could have found something in GB, too. Cursebreaker do work on more than just old Egyptian graves, and we know that there are dragons in England, too. So, what conclusion leaves that?
Percy ... well, in his case you can probably add that his parents didn't fall over backwards in awe that he was promoted, and actually had the gall to disagree with His Holyness the Minister, whom Percy adored blindly.
The twins would never have gone along with Molly at that point in time. They dropped out of school, after she was so obsessed that they need good NEWTs so they can go to the Ministry, and they opened the shop, after Molly had done her utmost to destroy everything they made. She'd probably have yelled and fumed all the time, trying to force them to end this career and be good little bootlickers for the Ministry.
Ron ... I could see him either staying comfortably at home, or losing patience with the mother who put him down at every turn, too.
Ginny - well, if she didn't get Harry, I am not sure Molly would have approved of ANY boyfriend, and I am sure she wouldn't consider Quidditch a good career for a girl, either ... so the conflict would be inevitable, too.

I never really thought of them running away, I think it was just them getting their own lives. I moved four hours away to the middle of nowhere to go to college. I think they just wanted to be in control of their own lives. But Molly is too controlling towards them especially Percy.

Some kids simply want to get out on their own. My family is a very loving and caring family, but when my three older siblings went off to college, they were gone. Yes, they would come back for summers at first, but once they were older, they'd rent an apartment with friends and live there.
I am planning on doing this as well simply because I will be an adult and don't want to live with my parents as one.
For this reason, I don't think the Weasley boys leaving had anything to do with family, but rather it was growing up.

Probably a mix of both - wanting to be on their own and escaping Molly's controlling tendencies.

I think for Bill it's just where his job takes him. I doubt he'd get into curse-breaking just to go to Egypt. And for Charlie, Romania probably has the closest/best dragon ranch (which he obviously loved).
I can see why people would think they were trying to get away from Molly and I wouldn't scoff at fics that said it.

Psh. I would get into curse-breaking if I could go to Egypt!

Bill= a mix of were his job takes him, wanting to travel and see the world, might like doing digs in egypt the same way archeologist do, to get away from nagging, and to be independent from parents like most of us do.
Charlie=a mix of what was availabe(there might have not been any positions for beginners in england) might have chose "the best in his options", and the last two on Bill's.
Percy=he didn't believe his families views, he spent so long conforming to his mother wants that when he got "her dream job for him" and got no congrats he snapped, I also think the twins took their jokes too far with him and made him feel an outsider(which Molly kinda helped along) so he wanted away from that.
Twins= was mainly Molly in my opinion, and they wanted to be completely self sufficient whether to prove that they could to her or to grow up is up for interpretation.

I completely agree and I think it would have been the same for Ron and Ginny if not for the war. I think after DH they most likely stayed close to home due to Fred's death and other trauma's suffered.
