One flaw I've found on this site is that there isn't (to the best of my knowledge anyway) any way to tell people when a new chapter has been added. While the Unread icon indicator is a good hint, it doesn't tell us if it's a chapter that was previously on ff.net, or is an entirely new one.

Yeah, it's one of the few things I dislike about this site.

You would have that problem with reposting to any site. How would the new site know if something had been posted to another site before?

True, true...
It's just that it's impractical to be expected to know where every single story ended on ff.net, especially the ones that have already been taken down.

Yea...
There is a way I can think of for a good substitute, though. If every author will make an "Updates" thread that readers can bookmark and said authors make sure to post in every time they update their story, that'll serve as a substitute.
Just know that after bookmarking a thread, the forum won't notify you by default, you have to go to your profile, click on "Bookmarks" then find "Manage Bookmarks." You'll be able to change your default notification option there.

That sounds like the best idea. Since each chapter is it's own individual thread, bookmarking seems rather redundant.
Unfortunately, only a few authors have had this idea.

Unfortunately, only a few authors have had this idea. Yea, I've been posting that proposal whenever the topic's come up (granted, this is only the 2nd time I've had to opportunity). I'm hoping it will catch on.

How do we know when something is updated, isn't there something we can click to know what stories were updated that day... like how it was in fan fiction. I haven't gotten the hang of this website yet.

I'm working on posting whenever I add a chapter or two.

Well, in most forums, you'd be able to subscribe to a forum and it would email you when someone made a new thread. Unfortunately, unlike most forums, you can't subscribe to forums on a Proboards forum. You CAN, however, subscribe or "bookmark" threads. To quote what I said on the matter in another thread
