I think the authors should add an update thread where they post their chapters. It would let us readers bookmark the thread so we'll get an email letting us know the story has been updated.

Do you mean a thread that has all the chapters but is blocked to other users so they can't post? With a separate comment thread? Because that would be a good idea.

I have it set up for BFTF that I post in a thread in the discussion forum when I have updated a chapter or in some cases, chapters as I'm simply adding everything in right now.
I don't want people to post in the actual story chapters, so I always lock them to ensure it's simply the story there.

Is there any way for the thread that you post updates to to be restricted so only you can post to it? If people leave feedback for you there, we would get an email every time you get a review.

I can lock it and unlock it for posts that I make. I think you can still follow it that way though. Do you want me to go and try?

I think it would be good to really play around and see what kind of permissions you can set up for a thread. See if you can restrict a thread so only the original poster can reply, or if that fails, so only moderators can reply. That way, only you and other authors can respond to the thread, and you can make other authors understand that you shouldn't be posting in each others update thread.
Or else, if it's not too much work, can a thread be unlocked and then relocked after the post is added?

Yes, I've done that before. I can only lock/unlock threads in the BFTF forums, but that's what I think I'll do as it appears to be the simplest way.

I had already been thinking if it would work to set up an "Update Thread" for the whole board, making it clear that it's not to be used for comments, and every author who adds a chapter can tell people there. That way we'd have all updates in one place. Considering the small number of stories, that might work for the moment, and we'd have to watch only one thread for it. But of course, some might want to know only about updates for one author ...
