Obviously he knew about it, but I'm wondering if he somehow saw it and then a Death Eater preformed a botched memory charm to make Toddler Neville forget? That's why he had such a poor memory in the early books.

Interesting theory Ginny. I think it was sort of what happened to Harry. Harry saw Lily get murdered, but since he was so young, he couldn't recall it. Neville probably witnessed it but he was only a year old. Until he was older, it was probably a subconscious thing-he visited his parents and knew the story but couldn't reveal the details.

If someone did perform a botched memory charm on Neville, thenit wouldn't necessarily have been a Death Eater, it could have been an incompetent auror or someone from the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophies. I can't see one of the Lestranges or Crouch jr being kind enough to try and wipe Neville's memory if he was there. They would have just tortured him instead, and probably did a bit, to try and get his parents to talk, so that may have affected his memory as well.

Hmm.. That's a good theory. It would make sense for his bad memory, that he got tortured as toddler to get his parents to talk.

I can see him watching, or maybe being locked in a closet and hearing it. The Longbottoms could have charmed him into a safe-place of sorts or even just silenced him and locked him in a sound proof area. That's why they got tortured maybe, the Death Eaters were out to kill Neville and the parents got in the way, and once the Dark Mark began disappearing, they panicked and tortured the two into insanity.

I do think he was in the closet or something to block him from the noise. It was probably sound-proof or something. Maybe the Death Eaters were there to kill Neville-after all he was one of the two described in the prophecy.

Yeah, I really don't want to think of Neville as tortured as a baby. I know it's possible, but that's a bit too dark for me, and I don't see a baby not being severely mentally deficient and physically deficient from the crucio, if they even survived. I'd prefer to think of Neville as an unwilling witness that was never accounted for instead.
