Hey, I was wondering what your favourite Harry Potter themes were and why. And I mean themes as in Independent!Harry, Reading the Books, Animagus!Harry or Manipulative!Dumbledore and so on. I know a site that has lists with fanfictions belonging to that particular theme and I really enjoy reading through the stories, even if most of them are no longer updated and the site itself also hasn't been updated in a long time. |

Well, Independent!Harry can be really good, but it can wear after a while. RtB is the same. Animagus!Harry is awesome. I can enjoy a Manipulative!Dumbledore if it's done well and believably, but overdoing it can get too close to Evil!Dumbledore for my tastes, and I don't really like that.
One of my favorites is TimeTravel!Harry, e.g. "Delenda Est." I'll also drool over some AU fics like "Emperor;" I really do like to see ideas that haven't been done very often before, and I'll always make time to read a good fic that involves the monarchy and/or muggle gov, e.g. "Muggle Summer, Wizard's Fall." Crossovers are good too, on occasion, though it depends on exactly what's being crossed and how I feel at the time.

I enjoy HP crossovers depending what it's crossed with. I also like good!political!Voldemort, Political!Harry, Rich!Harry, Founders'Heir!Harry, Unsorted!Harry, DeathEater!Harry, Non-DeathEater!Lucius.
I'm not all that keen Azkaban!Harry, although there is a CR fic that's not long started that is an Azkaban!Harry and I think that's a very interesting idea.
Like Time-travel!Harry too but ones that focus more on Tom Riddle and Snape instead of on the marauders. Or when he goes back to the Founders' era.
Love Re-do fics. Mostly with Harry but I've seen a good one with Snape and I think there's one where both Harry and Draco are stuck.

I enjoy Independent! Harry, Political! Harry, and Powerful! Harry.
The only thing I do not enjoy really is a supposed Political Harry, yet there aren't much Politics in the story.
I also tend not to like Manip/Evil Dumbledore. While the character of Dumbledore has some severe issues, stories with him being Evil, or Manipulative to the point of Evil are annoying.

I've read a bit of Muggle Summer, Wizard's Fall - but I haven't finished it yet. I'll probably do so when I finish reading Point Given's Half Blood Prince (I've just finished reading Order of the Phoenix).

There's a huge amount of themes up there isn't it? XD But I really like reading HP fanfics! Can you blame me?
I really enjoyed reading Priya Ashok's "Harry Potter and the Trip to the Past" and am sad that she's not continuing it. I also really like reading slash fanfictions, but decided not to include them in this topic - since the topic is devoted to themes and not pairings.

Yea, timetravel!Harry acting as a seer is just about my favorite. And yea, I missed quite a few that I like but couldn't think of. Anyway, yea, I also really like Mentor!Snape, but not so much Severitus!Snape (including Snape-adopts-Harry). Slytherin!Harry is good, so is Nobility!Harry. And Political!Harry is the best. I've only read one Redo!Snape story (To Shape and Change, IIRC), but I liked it. When I said "timetravel!Harry" in my previous post, I was referring to redo fics.
Not really a fan of Azkaban!Harry - it leads too much angst IMO. I also refuse to touch fem!Harry with a 10-foot pole. Genderswapping any character flies with me about as well as a brick. Annnd, yea, the rest really goes on a case-by-case basis

I like the following best: Heir!Harry Intelligent/Independent!Harry Powerful!Harry Redo/Time-Travel!Harry Reading the Books Family or Mentor fics involving Remus/Sirus/Severus taking care of or helping Harry ( prefer helping Hogwarts Harry over Pre-Hogwarts) includes Apprentice!Harry Alternate Universe(Dimensional Travel)!Harry Stories where Harry is a magical animagus or multiple Manipulative! Evil! or Grandfather/Mentor! Dumbledore Hiding!Harry (Assumed/New identity) Crack!fics (Ex: Harry's Little Army of Psychos by RuneWitchSakura) I prefer Harry-centric of the listed categories, but will accept other stories as long as Harry is a major character. (Hell, I'll take almost any Harry-centric as long as it's not "dumb-as-a-brick-hold-my-hand-canon" Harry) Don't generally like: Crossovers Azkaban!Harry Girl!Harry (with one exception: The Dark Lord's Prize by dark cyan star - but it's only available on her yahoo group now unfortunately) Mpreg (Ironically, Slash is perfectly fine; I simply prefer fics where a female relative/surrogate is required for the birth of the child) Disabled!Harry Street!Harry Cutting/Suicidal!Harry Harem!Harry (excluding a few well-written soul-bond fics) And in general, any fanfics where the plot is that Harry falls in love with an OC who helps him work through all of his issues....I can accept a temporary relationship, but not a permanent relationship as part of the plot. We should definitively make another topic for pairings as well. I generally dislike Harem!Harry though. I've read a few of them and while I liked some of them, I just don't like fics where Harry has to marry several girls at the same time. I love reading reverse harem mangas and watch the same animes, but the girl usually falls in love with only one guy not all of them. This is my main reason for not liking Harem!Harry. I'm a huge fan of: Severitus Sirius/Remus raising Harry, preferably pre-Hogwarts, Canon stuff like HG and RH Forced marriage between characters who have some kind of canon related connection that suggests possible romance eg Luna/Harry NOT something like Draco/Hermione (Not a dramione shipper) Kidfics and deagings (BIG FAN) Little ones and Baby Harry Time Travel of the redo type without Harry Soul Bonds that have a good plot, not mindless oh look, their a couple, yay.. Time travel Eventually, I hope to write a story for each of my favorite theme. For most I have ideas, even parts written, but I have four stories going at the moment and eventually want to branch into other fandoms. I really don't want to get to the point where I have 10 stories posted and can't update them quickly enough without sacrificing other aspects of my life. But its a goal to reach |

Lord of Caer Azkaban and Dread Lord of Azkaban are two really well written Azkaban! Harry stories. I also enjoy Unspeakable! Harry, specifically Harry Potter and the Summer of Change. I can't stand cannon relationships, although I don't hate Ginny.

I just started reading a great story by mysecretthoughts called The Soul Guardian where Charlie and Harry are soulmates and I'm really liking it so far. I can't wait until the author updates it!
Anyway, I forgot to add Baby!Harry and Deaged!Harry to my list up there. I also love Remus and Sirius bonding with Harry. There's so many themes I love to read that there are bound to be some that I forget to mention. I also like mPreg, but I didn't mention it because I thought that it belongs in the pairing section. ^^

One of the reasons I never read any stories with that in the summary. It looks stupid! (sorry if I offended anyone, just my opinion and I'm sticking to it.) oh, btw, I like the stories where they bash Ginny and/or Molly, not the whole Weasley family, just those two. Maybe some Ron bashing once in a while. I don't know if that is a theme or not..... |

It's shorter and more to the point than trying to explain the story or character plot. And it takes less characters for a limited summary description, in my opinion.

It's because it's a good, "cheap" way to describe characters and it takes up less space, which is important when you have limited space. I personally like stories with those markers in the summaries, it lets me know what I can expect from the characters and story and helps me figure out whether the story in question is worth me reading at just a glance. |
