Hello all, I was just wanting your views on the rating system that ff.net implements and how hypocritical it is. In my opinion, I don't understand how the Fiction Rating system that ff.net implements can be done. The K-K+ rating states that these stories are for children ages 5-12+, this is like the G and PG ratings in movies/series. Yet, this is the real kicker, ff.net does not encouage anyone below the age of 13 to be on the site. Really, that is the most backass statement I have ever heard! You don't want kids below 13 on your site but two of your ratings are geared for them? It sounds like they need to revamp the ratings system for people the age of 13+. Because seriously, do you really think a child from 5-12 really wants to sit inside reading fanfiction when they could be playing or whatever kids do these days?
Also, the admins need to specify exactly what they consider "MA" if they want to enforce the ban on these fics. All you say for a "MA" rating is explicit language and adult themes. What the hell do YOU consider adult themes, because in this day in age most teens already know what drug use, rape, and sex means and even how to do it. And if you are seriously attempting to crack down on explicit langauge, you're better off deleting every fic in the T-M sections because fellows, get this, everyone knows curse words these days.

It does say that detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA, but for some reason that's included in the definition of Fiction M instead of being where it should be, in the definition of Fiction MA.

That is also something that peeves me off. They say that sexual intercourse is "MA" yet why is it not in the description for "MA"? It is also annoying that both the "M" and "MA" ratings feature the same topics.

There is no reason why they can't add MA to their rating list, if they're so concerned all of a sudden they can add an age verification page for MA stories. Personally I don't think kids should be reading fanfiction anyway, some things should just be for adults (like R rated movies and video games). I mean seriously when was the last time you read a fanfic geared towards someone under the age of say sixteen? But still fanfic sites have no more responsibility to stop kids from reading the stories than a book store or library that sells/lends romance novels. Are they going to ban romance novels from stores/libraries due to the explicit sex scenes because someone under age might buy the book? I mean think about it there is no age restriction on those books and they are just as if not more explicit than the stories on FFN. I know I was reading those books at 15 and so where my friends. It is the same principle for online stories as far as I'm concerned. It is the parents job to police what their kids do, just because there are so many parents who aren't up for the job doesn't mean the rest of society should be denied some harmless entertainment and stress relief. And it is harmless, just because my friends and I had what I consider to be a thorough sex education class due to those books it doesn't mean we ran out and started trying what we'd read...at least not at that age lol.

I remember the site from when MA fics were originally banned (then still rated NC-17). I did not know what the ban was really about at the time, because I never bothered to think about it, but I recently red that it was about being able to attract advertising. Without advertising, there would really be no way to keep a site that size running.
