I was just wondering, who here actually knows all the words to their national anthems? It got me wondering because at the Olympic opening they sang the british national anthem, and nobody I knew could sing the second verse, but that's pretty common here. It might be different in other countries, but here we usually just play the first verse and the chorus.

Me! Here! *waves hand* I can do all three stanzas. Even the two that are frowned upon these days... Nowadays, only the third stanza is sung. Because the first tow stanzas of the " Deutschlandlied" refer to borders Germany doesn't have any more... (The German hymn is originally a poem, by the way. Das Lied der Deutschen, written by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841.) I had to learn it in school when I was young.

That's pretty cool the handy thing with god save our queen is that it never stops being relevant in any way, because they jus change it to King if they need to. Although, it would be weird to sing king after so many years of saying queen.

I know the Canadian anthem to like, the second verse, but if it plays I can sing it but without the music I have no idea of the entire thing. And often I confuse the french and English versions, so I don't know one version properly memorized

I have absolutely no idea to the words to God Save the Queen *hides face in embarrassment*. If it ever came up (like in school assembly) I would just randomly move my mouth along to the music like all the other songs we had to sing. I think the last time I actually sung along in assembly I was 10 I found out the other day that Scotland has no national anthem but I know the lyrics to Flower of Scotland off by heart. Of course that's only because my Granda bursts out singing randomly a lot. I know some pretty weird songs

Funny side note:
Did you know that the British anthem "God save the Queen" has exactly the same melody as the Liechtenstein anthem "Oben am jungen Rhein"?
Withou lyrics, they really sound exactly the same. ;D

I'm American. We sing ours at every homecoming. I know the first stanza only of mine. I know there's at least four verses in the Star Spangled Banner.

Ooh, the Liechestein anthem was played at a soccer/Olympic type game (can't remember now) and they were playing England. The Brits thought it was their anthem and started singing it all over again

I heard about that one, too. I think it was some football World Cup game around 2003 or so... It must have been a qualifying match, because Liechtenstein usually isn't admitted into the World Cup... (they are really really bad players...) Just googled it: According to their Wikipedia-page they won 8 out of 129 games - and lost 106 outright. And they played 4 games agains Germany. Lost all 4 games with a goal ratio of 3:27 !!!!! (Gosh, I didn't knew they were that bad...)

Withou lyrics, they really sound exactly the same. ;D My Country Tis of Thee also has the exact same tune, though it isn't our national anthem. I too only know the first verse to Star Spangled Banner, but if I had the music, I would be able to continue to sing.

I'm American, and I know all of the Stars Spangled Banner. I was in Chorus in Elementary school, and had to learn it for essemblies. Most of the people in my grade probably don't, though.

Many people have trouble with the Star Spangled Banner as it sung today (just the words, never mind the fact that it's got a range of an octave and a half), but what many people don't know is that the version sung today is actually only a quarter of the original song. There are three additional stanzas in the original.

I can sing the star spangled banner, mainly because in my elementary schools (I attended two different ones, one in Ohio, the other in Florida) every morning they would do the pledge of allegiance (extremely excessive, especially if you know what it means, and in a subtle way it's a bit insulting) and also the national anthem. I heard it every day for 6 years basically, so I know the words.

I don't know my anthem off the top of my head, but I could probably sing at least two verses if I had the music, probably more. I'm usually pretty good at knowing the words to songs.

God Defend New Zealand has 6 verses: 5 in english and 1 in maori. Everyone has to learn the first english one and the maori one but we don't very often use the second engish one and we hardly ever if ever use the other 3

The song used as the Czech anthem has originally two verses but only the first one is used for the anthem. We all know the lyrics because it is sung in the fourth grade (I think) during the music lessons. And there also used to be a joke which helped us to remember the begining of the anthem - it starts with words 'Where my home is' but it sounds more like 'Where is my home?' (the Czech language doesn't have fixed word order so it can be interpreted as both a question or a normal sentence) and so if anyone said those words, we used to answer 'Another homeless'.

I know part of the Canadian anthem since I'm pretty much surrounded by Canadians and they have to sing it on Canada Day. it is interesting to celebrate Canada Day and Fourth of July in almost the same week.

I know the entirety of the Star Spangled Banner, but my vocal range doesn't stretch that far. The "And the rocket's red glare" part makes my voice crack every time.
