She smiled, "Three aces."
Then, pretending to carefully consider, "I think I could, but what of your wuld I have to put up with?"

Maxwell smiled wanly. "You mean other than my various forays into dark magics that leave me in your excellent care? Well, let's see..." he rubbed his chin in mock-thought. "I'm rather formal at times, obsessive over my work, and highly protective of people I care for. Think of me as a personal guard dog." He laid down a card. "One nine."

"Oh no," she teased lightly, "That's almost too much! I think I'll have to back down now. I think it's best really, I mean, then you/i] wouldn't need to put up with my incessant care, my inability to articulate myself when I get embarrassed, and my own lack of social skills. I think I'm doing us both a favor really. Three tens."

"I call bullshit." Maxwell said lightly, noticing that he had two of the tens. "On both. It would be very difficult to manage without you. And I have two tens."

"Your question then," Alice said lightly, "And if you feel that way, then I don't really have any choice but to stay then, now do I? And I did put down two tens, but I needed your help to make it a full set, just like I still need your help to make me feel complete, was that too cheesy? It came off better in my head."
She turned a light pink, and then a darker red upon realizing how close those words could have come to a confession!

"No, that wasn't cheesy at all, Alice." Maxwell said, feeling oddly happy with her choice of words. "And as for my question...what made you want to say yes to going out with me that first time?"

Alice was surprised, but she considered the memory, "I don't know what the one reason could be, but you helped me, and I felt like I owed you something in return, I don't like being in debts. And a part of me just was really curious about you. You were charming and paid attention to me. You were the older, more mature man, and I felt special when you singled me out, I still do. I think I just really wanted to know more, more about why you chose me, and what you were thinking. I wanted to feel special near you, and wanted to know what made you special. Why did you ask me that day?"

I could tell her that I wanted her as a healer, and the possible knowledge she could have possessed, but that won't go over well. But those weren't the only reasons, anyway. "To be honest, I'm not sure. We just seemed to connect, and I wanted to know you better. You were so shy and sweet, and pleasant to be around." He laid down one card. "One six."

"I'm glad you did," said Alice with a smile, "I son't know where I's be right now without you. Two sevens."

"Now let's not start the endless cycle of thank yous." Maxwell said brightly. "Why don't we both just agree that we'd be worse off without each other?" he laid down four cards. "Four eights."

"Bullshit," said Alice, "To the cards, I mean, I know I have an eight still, somewhere in my hand, I think. Otherwise, I agree, I'd need your help just like you need mine, and speaking of help, shall I make lunch now?"

"Well, you got me again." Maxwell admitted, before putting his cards down. "And yes, lunch does sound rather nice, thank you."

"Alright, last question then," said Alice with a smile, "What would you like to do after lunch?"

Maxwell thought for a moment. "We could sit in the garden for a while, if you'd like."

"That sounds lovely, would you like to comr to the kitchen while I cook, and then we eat outside, like a picnic almost?" asked Alice hopefully. She'd always wanted to go picnicking as a kid, but her parents never had any time.

"Sure thing." Maxwell said, as he got himself up. The fire didn't affect him now for the moment, though he was still rather sore. "A picnic outside, amongst the flowers. I could use a little fresh air."

"Alright!" said Alice excitedly, "Here, lean on me."
She moved to catch Maxwell, allowing him to place his arm around her shoulders again.

Maxwell leaned against Alice, glad that nobody else was here to see this. Octavius wouldn't let him live it down - he'd insinuate all kinds of vulgar things, and then Maxwell would be forced to sic Veronica on him. He snickered at the mental picture of that. "So, what will you be making, Alice?" He asked pleasantly.

"I was thinking I'd make some turkey sandwiches," said Alice thoughtfully, "And some salad maybe, or a fruity dessert, but I don't want to waste too much time in cooking." as she replied, the two made it towards the door, and Alice felt incredibly warm and a flutter in her heart at being so close to Maxwell.

"I think the sandwiches should be enough." Maxwell said brightly. "I don't want you to outdo yourself. Especially after that lovely breakfast." There was something pleasant about seeing this new side to Alice. He didn't realize that she knew how to cook. Then again, having grown up with servants that did all the work, he had never picked up the skill himself.
The whole process, like healing or potions, was a mystery and wonder to him.

"Are you sure, I know you like sweet things," said Alice, feeling oddly comfortable in Maxwell's arms, having him lean on her. She could smell his cologne, a warm, musky scent, much like himself. They reached the stairs, and began to wobble down.

"I'm more than sure, Alice. Don't trouble yourself on my account. I think I can go without something sugary for a while." You're more than sweet enough for my tastes. Maxwell nearly choked on his own saliva. Where were these thoughts coming from?

"Alright," said Alice, as they approached the bottom of the stairs. "I'll make something sweet to drink instead, do you want smoothies, or juice?"

"We have different fruit juices in the fridge." Maxwell said placidly. "Why don't you pick one that you like?"

"Alright," she said brightly, as they reached the kitchen. She felt oddly disjointed as she helped Maxwell into a chair. That moment of closeness had passed too soon. "Is there anything special you like in your sandwiches?"
|
|

"Not really." Maxwell said, already missing their physical closeness. Wait, no. There was no reason to. He rid himself of those strange thoughts and cracked his neck, which had gone stiff. "I completely trust your judgement. So long as you don't put any horseradish on mine."

Alice nodded, and flitted around the kitchen. She'd keep it simple, as she plucked some tomatoes out of the fridge, some lettuce, cheese, turkey, a fancy kind of spread for sandwiches, some olives, and a few pickles. She grabbed the bread, and began waving her wand to heat the turkey. Once it was heated, she chopped quickly, and then moved back to the fridge to get some juice. She looked around, and then plucked out the pumpkin juice and orange juices.
"What should I use to put the sandwiches on?" she asked, plopping the juice jugs on the counter.

"There are plates in the cupboard to your left." Maxwell said, as he watched her work. It was very simple, but she seemed able to make it interesting somehow.

"Alright," said Alice with a smile, grabbing the plates carefully. As always, they were fine china. She spread the sandwiches, and began to arrange things neatly, already hnting for a tray to levitate everything on.
"I began cooking at a young age, when I was six. My mum didn't like to, and she and my dad often skipped meals, or forgot to feed me since they were so busy, so my mum started teaching me how to make sandwiches, and other things that didn't need the stove so I could make myself something when I was hungry." she said jovially, explaining how she knew how to cook, "Then I began reading cookbooks when I was older to try my hand at new things."

Maxwell's expression soured for a moment, but he smoothed it back. What kind of parent has their child cook when their so young? That sounded an awful lot like neglect... "That is rather young. Did you ever hurt yourself?" he asked, concerned. The more he heard about those parents of her's, the less he liked them. Maybe it would be a good idea to have Octavius look into them.
