Yes. Completely. It's so irritating when she's the perfect Miss Braniac who can't be wrong, and is suddenly beautiful and all the guys love her. I want to strangle those writers.

Definitely. And there were stories where I wanted to strangle both Hermione and the author when it ended up her bossing Harry around 24/7 and he was basically unable to even decide what to eat without asking her first. (Even when he was from the future and should have known what to do!) Another type of story I usually give up very fast. Not good for my blood pressure at all *growls*

Hermione's got her faults, and a lot of fanfic authors don't acknowledge them or sort of gloss them over. So yeah, I reckon she's turned into a Mary-Sue a lot. It annoys me no end, because I find her more irritating without her faults for some reason.

I find her irritating both ways. The thing that gets to me is that she's the main feature of more stories than Harry! I mean really now, canon Hermione was so annoying, and fanon Hermione is more-so. She's not the ideal girl to be! And I especially hate made-over Hemione that now has brilliant blue eyes and black hair that falls to her ankles andis dating Draco Malfoy and they're always just about to shag when a new boy enters and confesses his love, and she becomes all whiny and crying.

Ugh, there are stories like that? I don't even want to *imagine* that possibility, never mind read it! *reaches for the brain bleach*

I mainly hate Harry/Hermione pairings cause they essentially have Harry have no brains or have them but act as if his intellegence can't compare to Hermione's. There was one that really pissed me off. Harry planned something without Hermione's input and Hermione threw a hissy fit on how he didn't respect and trust her. Though it's made known that he didn't do it for those reasons. Usually it's done cause it wasn't anything big and he saw no point in bothering her with something so simple. Then not five minutes later we find out Hermione planned something big that affected Harry and had none of his input. And Hermione didn't keep him out cause she never thought of asking him; usually it was because she didn't RESPECT his intelligence to give helpful advice. Then the most didgusting part is she'll punish Harry and Harry will just nod to the fact that his girlfriend is a terrible hipocrite.

Yes, that's exactly the sort of story that annoys me no end. There are exceptions to the rule, but too many stories go down that road. Hermione has even in canon that bad habit of going behind Harry's back even when it concerns him and doesn't see any reason to tell him (Firebolt, Skeeter interview), but expects him to tell her everything. Some fanfics take that sort of behaviour to the extreme. Really, Hermione may be intelligent and have a bigger knowledge of the theoretical stuff, but when things get seriously, she's not of much use. And Harry being an even worser whimp than in canon and allowing her to walk all over him is just too much to read.
In consequence, one of my problems with RtB (and other) fics is when people lay into Harry for being annoyed with Hermione for the way she disregards his wishes and opinions completely. That's not an equal relationship or even friendship.
Sometimes it's amazing how someone who gets all worked up about house-elves being slaves thinks her friends have to treat her with the same reverence and blind obedience as elves treat their Masters.

Yup, she definitely is a Mary Sue, and I'd even go so far as say she's JKR's Mary Sue character in canon. She's even admitted as much, that Hermione is a stand in for many of the things JKR put up with growing up in school (being smarter than most of her peers, liking to read over other stuff, being picked on for it, etc...)
That being said, in canon, IMO, Hermione isn't all that bad. I do wish that JKR had done a little better at spreading the wealth with regards to showing that: why yes, the boys really do have the ability to do magic. The constant over abundance of all enchantments and spell casting by Hermione alone and the boys constant saying "that's really complex magic...you're awesome Hermione" gets really old.
Harry and Ron wouldn't have been able to make it as Aurors (and forget about them being co-heads of the department) if they were so incapable as the come off as (at least at first glance) when reading the books.
But, again, I don't think JKR completely goes off the rails with regards to Hermione's Mary Sue-ishness.
You are absolutely right about how way too many fanfic writers turn her into a caricature of perfect genius competence having to live amongst idiots.
Hermione, IMO, as she is written in the books would not be described as beautiful, stunning, or even overly pretty. I most certainly think that Ron sees her as being pretty and fanciable, I just don't think people should be thinking of Emma Watson when they frame their mental image of what Hermione looks like. I think her hair needs to be much more out of control for one.
Heck, Bonnie Wright, IMO totally has the wrong look for what Ginny in the books is implied to look like. Her hair isn't red enough for one.

In my opinion teflonbilly JKR does "spread the wealth", as you put it. I mean when Harry teaches defense or when they have a good teacher in that subject he always is better than Hermione. And in the seventh book we just have to accept that she has a much wider arsenal of spells. But we still see instances where Harry has to take over from her and do the same spellcasting as her in regards of protection.

Hm. Gives it sense that I like Hermione, but on the same time she annoys me way to much. I think Hermione is way to 'perfect', even with her completely annoying faults that she dislikes to be worse than anyone, that she bosses them around. Like in OOTP, when Harry planned to go to Umbridge's office, she hissed and hissed, until she had to give up, since he was way to stubborn to give after. Way to go, Harry! Alright, it was a stupid plan, but still.
I think that the books almost always seem to put Harry and Ron to be incapable of doing anything good magic. But they managed to pass the OWL's, and all the year tests. Alright they may not be as good as Hermione, except Harry in Defense, but yeah.
