This is a plot bunny that's been kicking around my head for the last year, that I thought I'd share with you and to hopefully get some ideas from the collective here.
Background: Ron is actually the seventh child of Arthur and Molly Weasely, Ginny was their eighth. Molly had her first son, Richard, a year after graduating Hogwarts when she was 18. She had married Arthur the summer after she graduated when she was 17 and Molly and Arthur lived with Molly's parents the Prewetts while Arthur was getting on his feet at the Ministry.
Molly's parents and Richard were murdered by Death Eaters before he was a year old, Molly was not even 19. Obviously this devastated Molly, but she became pregnant with Bill she through herself into devoting herself to focusing on the positive and providing the best homelife for her family, regardless of the tragedy that came before. This tragedy also goes a long way, when coupled with the violent murder of her only brothers Gideon and Fabian, why Molly is so overly protective and sheltering of her children during the period of the books
However, for whatever reason (I haven't really thought of how to explain this part) Molly and Arthur never talk about baby Richard, and since Molly's parents, and brothers are dead, most people don't even realize that Molly had a child before Bill. Due to the great number of deaths during that time, and do to Molly having been mostly a homebody during this period.
Arthur is actually the seventh and youngest son of his parents, making Ron the seventh son of a seventh son. This has traditionally been a birth order of great mystical significance and fortells of a child that should be gifted magically.
Now, where I'm failing to come up with is what exactly the gifts Ron should have.
I feel that it is subtly implied in the books, although in a humurous manner, that Ron actually has a mild level of precognition. Where Ron has made a wild ass guess of the future in the book, these things have subtly eventually come true (I'd have to dig into the text to remember, but I know it happened more than once.)
But personally I think the effects of being the seventh son of a seventh son should be a little more interesting (but necessarily overwhelming, I'm not talking about Ron becoming Super!Ron or anything) than run of the mill divination or seer ability (although that could be part of it.)
I was hoping to develop this where it was these abilities/talent/gift whatever when they eventually manifest what gives Ron a kick in the rear to properly apply himself academically and put some serious effort into developing himself magically. It'd make for some interesting character development, and nicely enough, plenty of interaction with Hermione which would be good for deepening their relationship following the war.
I'd also considered taking this even more AU, and have this manifest sooner, probably the summer after Ron got his new wand, or during the course of third year during Sirius's being brought into the story. I think the Trio gradually discovering that their is something different/going on with Ron would be a good way of driving more interraction between them and Professor Lupin as well and more concretely bring him within Harry's life, which would be better if Harry had more adults that actually love him in his life as well.
What do you guys think?
