This was posted on youfanfiction page Dear Users, We are sad to have to say that, due to low donations and time limitations, there is a possibility that within the next few months, this site may have to close. When we started it, we didn't expect that we would get anywhere near the numbers we have and now it has become too much for us at the moment both financially and otherwise. We're sending this email in the hopes that a couple of our existing users may be interested in running the site themselves and, if this is the case, we'd love to hear from you asap so that we can work on getting you up to speed. To run the site as it is, it will only need someone with minimal coding knowledge, but for developments it will need more of an advanced skill. if there's a group of people who want to work on it, we'll be fine with that. We hope to hear from one, or some, of you soon so that we can still keep this growing site up and running. Kind Regards Your Fanfiction Admin

That, and they actually cared for suggestions and responded to mails, as far as I know. Plus, the setup looked promising.

Well that sucks, guess I am glad I had not really got into using it yet as was waiting till more stories were added not to mention seeing how long they last.

From the comments and answers, it looks like they are looking for a solution. Seems partly a financial and partly a time problem.

I agree. Let's wait and see how that develops.
Technically, I could move over to FFnet, since my story is not an RtB anymore after the rewrite, but it would definitely be a last resort...
And since I don't have the time to write anyway, I'm more than happy to wait and see how the situation develops...

Wait and see - so far, people have suggested ads to pay for the costs, and some have volunteered to help with the rest. So, maybe there's hope yet.

I liked it pretty well but I've been going to fanfictionstop lately and I like that one just as well. Though it doesn't have many stories of categories yet. Though if you want a new fandom they are happy to add more. Not to mentions the layout and graphics are very nice.
Yourfanfiction is great and I hope it can be helped.

It looks like yourfanfiction has finally closed down today. It's shame there were a few RtB's that were really good on there and I doubt they are going to be put up anywhere else after being for all intents and purposes being removed again.

At first I only got a message about the site being down for maintenance and thought they might add ads or something, but by now I am fearing the worst, too. Shame, really, and I had expected them to warn people at least a few days in advance.
Have to agree about the RtBs. It's sad, but I fear many will be lost now and given up. Can't even blame the authors, I know my friend and I gave up trying to finish our story, too. There's just no point in trying under these circumstances.

That's sad, I know yff was the last chance for a lot of great authors. At least some of them are trying to repost on ff.net now, like RoseDragonWitch and Shopaholic... but it's a shame that so many good stories have been lost in situations like this.

Yes. And we all know that the legality card seems to have been only an excuse, or how do you explain that there are still thousands of RtB on FFN no one is attacking? Either it's a legality problem, then delete all of them. Or it is not, then leave them be. So, what did they achieve save driving off the good authors and leaving us with the crap once again? Way to ruin a site that had already too much crap. It's really sad.

To be honest, I hadn't checked on YFF for a while. Now that I've got my invitation for AO3 there was simply no need to anymore.
Personally, I think it's a great loss thought. The site could have grown into something worthwhile. (Even though there were way to much Naruto fics around - but I guess every page has to start off from somewhere...)
Well, I'm going to move to AO3 properly come December. Right now, I'm busy writing Nanowrimo (and I'm behind by about 6k words... so, lotta other stuff to do first) but once that's over, I'll move my fic(s) there.

Well, Ithiarel, out of 500 fics, there were about 400 HP, so I don't know why you are complaining Sprig, we don't know anything for sure. There was no announcement, which I'd have expected. At first I got an error message that the site is down for maintenance, later on it changed to server not answering. So, either they have messed up royally, or the site is actually gone. While I hope for the former, I fear for the latter. There had been people volunteering to help with the problems, financial and time-wise, but maybe they didn't get what they needed, who knows? It's really sad, the site had potential.

Well, Ithiarel, out of 500 fics, there were about 400 HP, so I don't know why you are complaining *lol* Well, maybe it was just the impression conveyed through their forum... I've started uploading my story to AO3 now. The prologue is up, and the first chapter will join it some time next week. Unfortunately, I am terribly behind concerning my nanowrimo schedule - so, I'll have to take care of that first... But at least, I seem to be getting quite a few first drafts for stories out of it. ;D

I think they opened the site with the expectation of a few loyal authors and got overun by the ff.net refugees.

A friend of mine stumbled about the NaNoWriMo earlier today and decided to participate - imagine what she has to catch up on!
Already bookmarked your AO3 page, so I'll be able to keep reading. Hm, at least it seems as if you can leave reviews there without having to be a member - from what I have heard so far, you could otherwise wait until Easter for any comments from new members, lol.
Unbeastly, my impression was that they made the site exactly for the FFN refugees, but I could be mistaken. Either way, it's sad if they are really gone for good. I actually liked the site.

What I like about Ao3 is that you can answer comments publicly. (Unlike on FFNet where you would have to repeat yourself a dozen times in private messages, because people keep asking the same things in their reviews...) That was possible on YourFF too - and I thought is was a great feature. So, I'm really happy that it works like that on AO3, too. ;D
I don't want to image how it would be to join nanowrimo this late. Right now, I'm about 6k words behind schedule. And I'll probably have to pull an all-nighter today in order to catch up... *shudder*

Yeah, that was always nice. My very first archive where I did more than just lurk did have that feature even back in 2003. Most of us do read reviews there, too, for exact that reason - it's interesting to see how people latch onto different things in a story and what the author has to say. In some cases the discussion went on in private; I've become rather good friends with some people there that way.
It was rather funny when quite a while later FFN proudly announced that now authors can answer to reviews directly. Seeing what we were used to, that didn't seem like such a huge achievement ;D
Said friend has a lot of free time right now and more time than you do. Besides, she only does it for the fun of it and without any pressure, I think. Let's just see where she is going to end up with it!

I always enjoyed communicating with reviewers, but I know what you mean about wanting to reply publically... Loads of people asked the same questions over and over, and it sometimes meant I struggled to reply to other reviews.

And often enough it doesn't even help to put the answer to these frequently asked questions into an AN, because people seem completely unable to read them ... don't ask how often I end up shaking my head when I see reviews asking what the chapter or AN of the chapter already answered - and sometimes not only once.

Some readers tend to think that the ANs don't have a purpose, sadly. But then, for some people, common sense isn't a strong point.

Post by Kitty279 on Nov 17, 2012 13:23:19 GMT -5
True. While I tend to skip clear disclaimers, I usually at least scan the AN to see if there's something important. But I seem to be a rare species in that regard

Post by eskimoRock on Nov 17, 2012 13:40:34 GMT -5
To me, it seems like common sense! After all, the author could have some important information that you need to read, or something that makes you understand a story better :/ like you said, we're obviously quite rare!

It is. That's why I never understood why so many people don't read them. And the same goes for summaries. Why complain people about the 'wrong' pairing etc. when it was in the summary from the beginning? How do they chose stories they read if not by the summary?

Well, Yourfanfiction seems to be gone for good. THe page is still down and their tumblr is gone, too...
Shame that.
Regarding ANs: I write author notes, and generally I even put important things into them. That's probably why it annoys me to no end, when readers ask questions that should already be answered, just because thy obviously skipped over the A/N. I mean, what's the point of writing on, if there isn't anything worthwhile in it? What do people think, why an author even writes an A/N?

Shame indeed. Some people never get it. Shopaholic just started reposting. following the method used on YFF and cutting parts of the original text out. Despite saying that the story is edited for that purpose in the summary and explaining it at the beginning of the first chapter in the first line, people keep complaining in reviews that there's a bug replacing parts of the book text with ...
