If you took the space out between black and adder, you would have come up with a BBC comedy show from the 80s.
To me it would be an albino type snake with red eyes.

To be honest, whenever I think of Slytherins snake I always go back to the basilisk. It just seems fitting, especially since Salazar built the chamber it lived in

I'd vote for the common Adder since it's the only venomous snake native to Britain.
Though, any magically venomous snake native to Britain would do, just not a Basilisk since it would have made it too obvious for the mystery of the horror of the chamber of secrets. Hermione would have had to been a blithering idiot to not have figured it out if the Basilisk had been the Slytherin mascot.
