If you took the space out between black and adder, you would have come up with a BBC comedy show from the 80s.
To me it would be an albino type snake with red eyes.

To be honest, whenever I think of Slytherins snake I always go back to the basilisk. It just seems fitting, especially since Salazar built the chamber it lived in  |

I'd vote for the common Adder since it's the only venomous snake native to Britain.
Though, any magically venomous snake native to Britain would do, just not a Basilisk since it would have made it too obvious for the mystery of the horror of the chamber of secrets. Hermione would have had to been a blithering idiot to not have figured it out if the Basilisk had been the Slytherin mascot.
