WHACK.
Then nothing, He felt as if he was being lifted out of a deep warm fog, moving from sleep to almost being awake. He tasted blood in his mouth and his ribs hurt. He opened his eyes and the world was upside down. Clothes and toys were everywhere.
It was so quiet. Then he heard a bird whistling somewhere. He smiled at that.
The seat belt dug into him. It was holding him up and he felt like a broken toy. From his upside down world, he looked into the front seat. Daddy was also upside down and with his seat belt on. He was very still and he could see a little blood through his hair. Daddy will need a band aid, he thought.
He called Daddy but he didn't answer. He wanted to cry but he remembered the last time he cried and his father screaming at him that boys didn't cry and he slapped him. Mummy had screamed at Daddy saying he was only 5 years old for goodness sake. Then they started fighting so he took Alexis to his room so he couldn't hear any more.
He looked around for Lexi. She was also upside down and her eyes were closed, blood pooled around her head. “Lexi?” he whispered.
Nothing, “Lexi” he called, reaching out and taking her little hand. She moaned softly and opened her eyes.
He loved his little sister more than anyone in the world. She was his best friend and his sunshine. He loved Mummy too but Lexi was his cuddle up friend. He didn't love Daddy as much and he was confused because Daddy told him he loved him but Daddy would hit him and sometimes he didn't know why.
He undid his seatbelt and fell to the roof. He turned around and reached up and undid Lexi's so she could fall onto him. She screamed as she landed on top of him. “My arm and head hurts” she said.
“It’s ok Lexi” he said holding her gently.” Let's get outside”.
He helped her out of the car and sat her against a tree. “Wait here” he said and he turned back to the car for Daddy. He gently shook him. Daddy he called. His eyes were open. But nothing, he shook him harder.
He understood. The world fell into a funnel. He just sat there staring at him. “Daddy” called Lexi, now coming back to normal. “Daddy” she called again and this time with tears. He walked back to Lexi and sat beside her. He gave her a cuddle and she cried some more. “Daddy is asleep” he said.
“Can't we wake him up” she asked?
“Not yet” he lied.
“I want Mummy” she cried, knowing something was wrong but not knowing what.
He looked around. Trees everywhere, the car was on its roof and broken. Glass and bits of metal and plastic and suitcases and clothes were everywhere.
He remembered- after Mummy had gone to work, Daddy had packed their clothes and said they were going to go on a little holiday, just the three of them. But what about Mummy they asked. Daddy said the place they were going to was only for Daddies and other little boys and girls and where they were going they could have a rest and play lots of games.
He stood up. “Come on Lexi” he said, taking her good hand and helping her up. Together they walked through the trees and back onto the road, hoping a car would come along soon.
