I would like to know your thoughts as to how in Merlin's name did Peter get into griffindor? Or how he might have gone bad. If you want you may also suggest what house you think he should have gne into. Personaly I think Sylthrin because he is self-preserving.

I think Peter got into Gryffindor because he wanted to be in Gryffindor, as the hat takes your choice into account. Also perhaps the rest of his family had been in Gryffindor.
I agree he'd make a good Slytherin. He is self-preserving, but he's also actually quite cunning. Just think about the way he set Sirius up.

Just because that's what he became doesn't mean he was like that when he was eleven. People change as they grow.
Maybe Peter was brave but became far to reliant on James, Sirius and Remus to protect him that he lost his need to grow more courageous. His qualities shifted from being brave to keeping is protectors happy (as I think after a while that's all the marauder's where to him) and so when confronted with someone more powerful he jumped ship for his own protection.
I think Dumbledore was right when he said they sort to soon. If they waited to be sorted later it would be far more accurate. People would be sorted by who they are rather than trying to become what their house says they should be. They could also resort at the beginning of every year, I doubt everyone would remain in the same houses.

I think he did belong there, even though I don't particularly like that character. It takes a lot of bravery, courage and nerve, all gryffindor qualities, to become an illegal animagus and run around with a werewolf every month. He could have died, been horribly maimed... I think the fact that he did this shows that although he might have strayed down the wrong path in later life, he showed gryffindor qualities too.

Gryffindor was the right fit for him. Pettigrew is the groupie who hangs around the popular in the hopes that some of the fame will rub off on him. In that he is a lot like Ron.
He is not the typical glory seeking Griffindor since he is too cowardly. But neither was Dumbledore ever brave and he was in Gryffindor, too. Arguing Pettigrew belongs to Slytherin because he has more self-preservation than most Gryffindors (which mind you isn't difficult) is the same as saying that Dumbledore belongs to Slytherin because he is manipulative.
People don't neatly fit into square little boxes that make them a perfect fit for one of the Houses of Hogwarts. In the end students are placed where they want to go. Otherwise Percy would have landed either in Slytherin or Ravenclaw, but certainly not Gryffindor as he exhibits none of their traits.
Percy wanted to go to Gryffindor, because the rest of his family had been in Gryffindor. Ron didn't land in Slytherin despite being ambitious (remember what he saw in the Mirror of Erised), because he thinks Slytherins are evil and his family most likely wouldn't react very well, being as bigoted as they are. Snape was in Slytherin not in spite of his courage, but because he is the quintessential Slytherin.
