Crouch was imperiused by one of the Lestranges to attack the Longbottoms. It was done because Crouch Sr. was most likely to be Minister and he was very anti-Death Eater. They wanted someone they could manipulate until Voldemort came back.

They could also have approached him even before Voldemort defeat in 81 and then Imperiused him to attack the Longbottoms after that. It could explain why they thought him guilty (having witnesses that he knows the DE even before that night). They could do it because he would spy his Dad and act against him from the inside; the moment they give him the order, he would kill his Dad. And if he was caught and believed guilty it would discredit his Dad. It's a win-win situation for Voldemort. Thought, it would make me wonder what made Voldemort so sure of his loyalty when he used him as a spy at Hogwarts in 94-95? Voldemort was pretty paranoid? Did he believe that saving Crouch Jr. from his Dad's Impero would convince him that Voldemort was on his side and thus gain his loyalty? I love Political intrigues

Hm, would it even be necessary? If they told him what exactly was happening around his birth, it would probably be enough to turn him against his father and Dumbledore and to his biological mother. I'd rather put it into a different story, you don't need it for this one, IMO.

That was what I was slightly worried about. That it would put a little too much to put in one story. Though he would still have to be imperiused to torture. Just because he is horrified by his dad's actions doesn't mean that he is going to throw away his morals and joins a side that does things that disgust him.

Well, I guess I have too much the canon Barty jr. in mind, who was about as obsessed as Bellatrix In your universe, he is obviously very different. Maybe you are throwing too much in at once, but as I don't know what you plan overall, it's in the end your decision.
