A friend of me posted on her LJ a link to a testimony Naomi Novik, the author of the Temeraire series, gave in court about the importance of fanfiction and fair use of transformative work for creativity and artistic development. Absolutely worth a read. Testimony of Naomi Novik

That was a very interesting read. And it made me very happy, especially as someone who would love to write fan fiction but is terrified to do so because of repercussions. It is nice to see that there is someone out there in the Professional Writing World that is on our side.

She has actually a very good point. I know at least four people who have started out as fanfiction writers and now have published books or at least contributed to anthologies. Ever heard of the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy by E. L. James? That one started out as a Twilight fanfiction, just as an example. By now they have sold over 70 million copies. Without fanfiction, she'd probably never have written it. And then there is Cassandra Clare, of the 'Very Secret Diaries' and 'Draco Trilogy' fame. These are the most known ones.
Oh, I'd encourage you to try to write anyway. As long as you don't post the book text, as the RtB stories do, you should be safe. And it's fun, believe me.
