So I found the Philosopher's Stone audiobook complete on youtube and I can't sleep. In the hope that Stephen Fry's calming voice and the familiar book would lull me to sleep I decided to listen.
Only now I'm more confused than ever about what happened October 31st - November 2nd 1981.
October 31st
Sometime at night - Voldemort turns up, kills James and Lily and is disembodied by Harry. The house is partially destroyed.
November 1st (Chronologically)
Professor McGonagall is watching Number 4 Privet Drive
Somehow the entire wizarding world now knows what happened and are celebrating.
Harry is presumably still lying in the wreckage of Godrics Hollow unsupervised and crying next to his dead mother.
Hagrid is sent to retrieve Harry.
Sirius actually does retrieve Harry (early to mid evening)
Sirius hands Harry and his motorbike to Hagrid
Hagrid begins flying from Godric's Hollow to Number 4 Privet Drive (he comes in over Bristol which only makes sense if Godric's Hollow is either in Devon/Somerset or South Wales and is about a 3 and a half hour drive).
November 2nd
Dumbledore turns up at Privet Drive at midnight
Hagrid turns up a little bit later
Harry (a 15 month old who has recently experienced major disruption) is left on a doorstep wrapped in blankets on a November night which is supposed to be wet.
Petunia Dursley finds her nephew on her doorstep.
Now on to the things I'm confused about.
Hagrid says he got Harry away before 'the muggles started swarming about' but Hagrid doesn't turn up until (at very best) early November 1st. I don't know about anybody else but if I heard a loud noise in the night coming from the house with that nice young couple and their sweet baby, looked out the window and saw part of the house gone I would be calling 999 as fast as I could dial. Houses falling to bits tend to cause some noise (not to mention if there's a gas or water leak).
Albus sends Hagrid, who cannot apparate, to the other side of the country. I don't know how long that must have taken him (driving, according to Google maps is about 9 hours). I mean it might have been the case of 'I thought there were no survivors' but if it's somebody who can get there in seconds/minutes vs somebody who will presumably have to use a portkey or the floo which could take longer and requires there's a floo network nearby I'd go for the first one.
The wizarding world knows before Sirius. I mean there's a parliament of owls flying everywhere by 8:30 am. There are people wandering around in cloaks in Little Whinging by 8:30am. And Sirius doesn't turn up until later and he's on the flying motorbike. You can apparate dude. It's quicker.
This timeline also changes in PoA. Which implies that everybody turns up much earlier than PA does. In PA it seems like Sirius turned up in the evening, handed Hagrid the bike, left and then Hagrid immediately left on the bike. PoA, it seems like everybody turned up much earlier - in which case why the arsing about all day.
Leaving Harry on the doorstep. I know this has been gone over, but I need to reiterate. Doorstep. Not a porch, which might have given him some cover. Doorsteps can be recessed a bit but the sort of detatched 3 bed house the Dursleys would have probably wouldn't have much of one. And again, leaving a fifteen month old (who can walk) in a blanket on a November night. One which is supposed to be wet. (Guildford, which is roughly where I think Little Whinging was, has gotten down to -8 and the average is 3 degrees celcius for November). This would be true of any child of that age, but especially one who has recently suffered a series of upsets to any kind of routine.
And I guess I can't get over this image I have in my head of a fifteen month old baby sitting in a crib crying because his mother won't get up and his head hurts and he's hungry and cold and scared.
Which I guess is part of the reason why I loathe the scene in the DH part 2 film where Snape finds Lily's body and is sitting on the floor cradling her and crying. I do not give two shits how twue your wuv for her was, there's a fifteen month old baby not two feet from you who's just watched his mother die. Actually, I think that scene sums up the Snape/Lily relationship perfectly. No matter what she wants (Snape to not be around her), no matter what she would have undoubtedly preferred (somebody taking care of her baby) Snape doesn't care about that, he just wants her.
I may be slightly drunk. This may make no sense.
Also now I want fic where somebody living in Godric's Hollow hears the explosion and calls 999 because there's a baby in there and the village rally around.
