I've seen in different threads about people getting those completely unhelpful, rude reviews and thought that it would be good just to have a place to let off some steam or have a laugh at.
I got this idea from listening to Azaelia ranting about a recent review. (You know it's bad when a review angers her).
The review she got insulted her immensely. The person reviewed anonymously and called her homophobic because she has a female Harry series, despite the fact she got a warning about a male character being a female in it. They also called her a a-hole and disgusting. She's written an angry rant on her profile.
Don't you just love it how people automatically assume that they know you if you write something? Az has been called a sexist against girls too (despite being female herself) because she had a comment about females in a story. Heck, I've even seen, no joke, several reviews from people with the name Sara, because an author made an original character an awful person and named said character Sara.

Some people are just rude on principle, which I find sad. Azaelia doesn't deserve it, and I hope she has recovered from it. Sadly, no matter what you write, there will always be the occasional idiot who flames you for not writing exactly what they themselves want. If Azaelia had written slash instead, someone else would have complained. Never understood why poeple keep reading stories when they should know from the summary what to expect. Why read 30 chapters to decide you don't like something when it was clear in chapter 1 or 2 what was coming?
Yeah, some really jump to conclusions. In a story, no matter if original book or fanfiction, you will often use things for plot purposes you don't necessarily agree with, so it's weird when people then judge you by way of these things. IMO, you only can get to know someone by long private talks.
*shakes head* Now that's stupid. Sara(h) is a very common name, so what's the problem? Even bad guys have to have a name, right?

She still a little steamed, and wishes that she could have replied to the review, but other than that she's okay. She just needed to vent. Thanks for asking.
I know. There is person on FanFiction that does actually do that. If they see a slash story they will purposely review it insulting the writer telling them that they have an illness like people who are gay (their words, not mine).
That annoys me. True, one person did get a bit narky with Azaelia once because she didn't have a warning at first, which she understood, but when an author has made it clear at so many points what's going to happen, you just have to look at the reviewer and say, "Serious? Can you read? All you're doing is making yourself look stupid."
I'll agree with that statement, because it's true. It's like Ewan McGregor from Star Wars said on an interview once; he said that he didn't like doing improvisation, because he said that no matter what you do, the person your improvising with will probably think that's what you're like in real life. it's the same with stories.
I know, right. Makes you wonder how old the reviewers were and if they are just very sensitive. I had to laugh at Azaelia, for she was the one you showed me the reviews; in a story she is writing she's got parent's trying to decide on a baby name. She got an author's not down the bottom saying something about the character's opinions of the names are not her own so she does offend any sensitive readers.

Sometimes it really helps when one can vent their frustration to someone; when I am angry about something, I feel better if I have the chance to complain to some willing ear about it.
Really? That's not only rude, but stupid as well. IMO, people like that are ill themselves - in the head.
Same here. Okay, a warning about stuff like slash, pairings etc. is always good (I admit to hating it when I start a good story and it turns suddenly into Harry/Draco or Hermione/Draco with no warning whatsoever!). But when authors warn in the summary *and* the disclaimers and then some readers complain about it, you are left wondering how these people chose what they read. I mean, the summary is what decides if I even give the story a try, because the title doesn't say much, and if it mentions something I don't like, I don't start reading. So what's their problem?
Very true. Some of my best friends I did meet on other boards on the internet, got to know them by way of many, many hours of chatting, did meet where geography allowed it (Australia is sadly a bit far away from Northern Europe), and we got along famously. Have been for more than a decade now in some cases, actually. One of them is coming over tomorrow for two days with his wife and children, and I totally look forward to seeing them again.
*shakes head* Honestl, some people! Names are in the end always a matter of taste. I like many names better than others, and I couldn't even explain why, it's just a preference. You leave me thinking that some people shouldn't read, because in some book or story someone could have a name they like and still be a good guy - are they then offended, too? It's too silly.

They are really rude. They insult the writer, swear at the writer and they will do it for every chapter. Then, if the writer replies to their review, they post the PM on their profile page and do commentary on it like it's a joke. They also link the PM to the person's profile page, addressing them with a rude name. It's really rude and disrespectful, yet they can't see it. They think they're doing the site a service.
I know. Maybe they just don't have enough drama in their lives and they want to make someone else's life miserable with their petty comments.
Yes, Australia is a bit far. I became friends with someone via Facebook who lives over in America and we communicate through emails, turning to each other when we feel like we've got no one else to turn to. We've never met, and the chances of meeting are very slim as I'm not a traveller.
Again, maybe they don't have enough to complain about in the real world so they go and annoy the writer.

That's really extremely rude. And you know what the sad thing is? On FFN they will get away with it, because the admins there will rather go against the authors than the flamers. If these people were on one of the forums I know, they'd be kicked out faster than they can say 'hi'.
Very likely. That, and too much time on their hands. Or, like in a case I know personally, some people need to put others down in order to feel superior themselves. They think they are god knows how great, but no one appreciates them as they deserve (in the case I know it has a lot to do with that person being lazy, arrogant, rude, unable to feel compassion or help others in an emergency if she's not paid for it - among what she'd call 'friends'). So, they keep lashing out at others in order to make themselves feel better. And then they are jealous because others achieve more and have better friends. It's a pathetic existence, if you ask me.
It's always great when you have someone you can talk with, not just for fun, but when you have problems and who will let you unburden and hold your hand virtually. My Aussie friend is by now somewhat of the little sister I never had, we have become very close over time. We still hope to meet one day, even if it is going to take a while. I can't go to Australia alone, and my usual 'partner in crime' for holidays doesn't want to take such a long flight. Aussie sis, on the other hand, has husband and three children, so it's too expensive to come to Europe with five people. But maybe, one day ...
