I've been curious as to what part in all of the seven books made you believe that Dumbledore was manipulative? Which line or scene or action. I know there's so many out there, but I'm always interested in knowing. For me, it was the following.
It's right after Harry says Voldemort took his blood from his arm. What about you guys? When reading fanfiction do you like it to be known immediately that Dumbledore is manipulative or would you rather slowly be introduced to the idea?

Hm ... I don't think it was just one line or so for me. The above left me wondering what the heck was that supposed to mean, then what he said about his knowledge of how Harry was treated. And when I thought back over the series, I guess it got worse and left me wondering. Then I started reading fanfiction, began to see even more incidents in a new light - and was forever seeing everything from the manipulative side.

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. It's why I enjoy reading Manipulative!Dumbledore fanfictions. I can always find some new way to spin a certain thing he did in a certain way, and it's completely interesting.

It's not just manipulative Dumbledore or even bashing or whatever, and not just HP, either. Fanfiction can be pretty interesting because you see so many takes on the same idea or little detail. It was something I always found interesting in the LotR fandom as well. People take some tiny detail, maybe just a sentence, a fleeting mention, and write a story about it or incorporate it into a story. And you end up thinking 'that's a new angle' or 'why didn't I think of that before?' and all that. It was fascinationg to see how different people can interpret something, and I got some very new ideas and POV just by reading fanfiction. That's something you don't get with the books alone - you get an image, and idea, and only by discussing it with other fans and by reading fanfiction you suddenly realise that your image is not necessarily the only one possible or likely for something. It can give you a lot of food for thought, help you to understand something better, regardless of what you think of a character or incident, or you suddenly make connections you didn't see before. That's why I thought it so interesting when I started reading LotR fanfiction.
