Hi, I know it's been a while but I needed to have a rant somewhere and this was the best place that I could think of.
Is anyone else getting seriously sick of seeing stories where James & Lily are alive with about 30 children?
No one in their right minds would have 30 children even if some were twins, it's just not possible at all to have 15 births and every time its twins or triplets.

There are a number of women who had more than one set of twins or the like, but yes, that amount of babies is pretty unbelievable, and the likelyness of that many multiple births completely unbelievable.
But really, lately it seems nearly impossible to find anything readable. Either the plot is idiotic or the pairing disgusting, at least for me, I often don't even get through the first chapter before giving up *sigh* As a result, I keep re-reading old stories when I want to read HP fanfics, because I can't find anything new worth it. So I know how you feel.

To be honest I'm just reading all the old stories rather than the newer ones. It must be the News Reporter/Media Content Writer/Blog Writer in me that refuses to read the new ones due to their plots, spelling & grammar issues.

Yeah, spelling and grammar can be an issue, too. I can take a certain amount of mistakes if the story is otherwise good, but I have my limits. But in most cases, the plots and pairings are my main problem. Interesting summary, until I get to the pairings. Or I start reading and soon realise that the plot isn't what I expected, or the execution is horrible. And if I find a reasonably good story, it's abandoned. Do you sometimes wonder what age the authors are, too, and if they are out of their teens yet?

A lot of them probably haven't reached their teens yet. However, I have found the odd one or two stories that are quite good, despite having unrealistic plots. There's one that's part of an author's collection of unfinished beginnings, one-shots & drabbles, where Lily and James have octuplets, though they still die when Voldy attacks. www.fanfiction.net/s/10319919/27/Little-Bouts-of-Randomness

I actually bit the bullet and read this particular writer's other stories and it turns out that each and every 402 of them has the same theme.

Brave! Though I hope you didn't read all 402 to make sure

More of a flick through. I've just spotted that someone seems to have copied all of White Squirrel's stories and posted them under their own pen name as well.

Oh, I have a number of his/her stories in my favourites, too. Some people are really too brazen for words. Did you tell the original author and/or report the plagiarist?

I sent a message and the next day the other account wasn't found.

Found yet another copycat. HJ Potter, original author being S.M Wane. Why are people doing this?

Correction, the person has stolen most of kb0's stories as well.

That's something I have been wondering about, too. Trying to steal stories and taking the credit for them seems to be something that may attract people who want the fame, but can or will not put in the effort to write something themselves. How they think they get away with it, I don't know. Maybe they think in such a huge fandom no one would notice that the same story exists under two names, and/or that with older stories, people wouldn't remember the original any more?
It is a widespread problem in any case. A fanfic author I know went on to write original stories and published them as e-books. She said even after a few weeks that she did a short search and already found sites where her book was copied and offered for sale - sales for which she didn't get the money. She had them taken down straight away. In that case, the copycat actually made money with it, which wouldn't be the case on FFN. And I know at least one author who refused to release her books as e-book instead or additionally to the print version because with her first attempt too many stole the book.
And then I remember that wonderful HP website/lexicon I found in 2003 or so, which in turn led to me getting into my first message board in 2004, to friends I am still in contact with after all these years, which led me to read FF, to read LotR and find more friends in that fandom. That website was stolen more than once, too, and some of the thieves were more than brazen when they were called on the carpet over it. They actually seemed to think they had a right to copy anything on the net and put it up as their own supposed work.

Looking at the other reviews it seems as though it is the same person doing it who is just creating a new account each time. I did send messages to both the authors but haven't heard anything back. The copycat is still updating chapters from all 7 of the stories that happen to belong to S.M Wane & kb0.
In the past, I have come across the same titles but the plots are completely different if I ever think of a story I will always check to make sure that it isn't already a title just in case.
Just in case it ever actually randomly happens to me- how do I go about reporting it?

Does S.M. Wane even write any more? Of kb0 I know he does, but they may not check every day. You can even report the story thieves to FFN directly. Go to the first chapter (or whichever is convenient), scroll down to the end. There you find three buttons: Actions, Share and Follow/Favorite. Under 'Actions', you can chose 'report abuse'. Haven't gone further, but I think then you should get to a way to report just why you report the story. That should do the trick. Same if it were one of your own stories. Or try the direct support email link and follow the directions there. (That's the 'Help' link below these buttons)

Hey, so I did actually report them because I'm not happy about the situation, they are now up to copying 10 stories but I doubt it will help because they change their name every day. It is usually the male name of a well-known person and today's happens to be a Prince.

No idea how it works on FFN, but on many websites you can block the IPN instead of the name, then changing the name wouldn't really help them any more. So, maybe it helps.

No one in their right minds would have 30 children even if some were twins, it's just not possible at all to have 15 births and every time its twins or triplets. It is entirely possible to have that many children and that many multiples. Here is a woman who has done just that. Genetic predisposition toward hyper-ovulation means that she's had six sets of twins, four sets of triplets and three sets of quadruples as well as single births. Of course in her case her husband is unwilling to use male birth control, doctors are unwilling to surgically intervene and hormonal birth control doesn't seem to work on her. However I really don't think James and Lily would be the sort of people to have that many children. For one thing, Lily would have much more of a choice in the matter in terms of birth control. But I agree, having thirty kids is just bonkers. What's the point? There aren't enough hours in the day to spend meaningful time with them, let alone home educate them.

Even if there is the very rare case where that many multiple births are actually possible, it's still irresponsible to do it deliberately, IMO. As you said, who has the time to take care of that many children? You'd need an army of nannys to take care of them. Which would add to the second problem - who can afford to feed that many children? Somehow I don't see a millionaire having that many, and anyone else would not be able to pay for it properly, never mind the necessary staff to do the work. Just imagine all the changing nappies, bathing, cooking, dressing/undressing ... never mind talking to them, spending time with them and all that. Here in Europe that would probably be an even bigger problem, as the older children would have to go to school, not caring for the younger ones.
Now I am wondering how old that author was - someone who thinks that many children are a good idea probably hasn't the foggiest how much time, work and money goes into raising even *one* child.

I'm not disputing that having that many children isn't a good course of action, just that it is in fact physically possible.
Frankly you'd be surprised how people managed. I know that in my family history are families of nine kids or more. Mostly it tended to be the poor, who had far less focus on education and no real access to reliable birth control so your only reliable option was abstinence and that was only an option if your husband wasn't the sort to exercise his 'marital rights'.
I know that today there are some relatively well known examples of families with 15+ children but it's nowhere near as common as it used to be. Birth control, access to abortion and lower child mortality rates have seen to that. And I'm fairly sure there's a lot of sibling-parenting going on in those families, which is deeply detrimental to both the children and their relationship.

Oh, I understood your point that it is biologically possible and even happens now and then. Friends of me mentioned a family they are friends with who have 10 children, too, though that of course isn't the same level as in that article and story.
These were just my thoughts on having that many children and why it was such a bad idea. You are right about that being less common nowadays, too, and the correlation between poverty and number of children. And I think we agree that it wouldn't be good for the children in any way; missing on education, being forced into responsibility for younger siblings way beyond their age, less attention from the parent(s) for each child, more poverty - these children will always be at a disadvantage, IMO.
Maybe that fanfic author did read the article you linked to and then thought it would be a great idea, because they were too young to think it through and understand the implications? Like "the Potters are rich and can afford many children", but not understanding that the children need more than just money for chlothes and food?
