So, since we're all fans of some of the best book series out there I decided to ask the big question. What is the best Movie/TV adaptation of a book you have seen? This goes for any book that was made into a film or series so you won't have to pick between some of the stories discussed on here.
To me I would have to say that the movie version of The Shawshank Redemption was probably the closes thing to the book that you could get. This may seem a bit fanboyish, but I love most of the Stephan King books turned movies. I think the main reason I enjoy all of them it would be because Mr. King takes part of every one of his films. Shawshank Redemption is my favorite story by Mr. King because of how human it is. Showing the struggle that prison life was in the past where prisoners were basically the states free labor was enlighting. Even if the two protagonist are both criminals you end up rooting for them when they go up against the corrupted warden and his cronies. The only thing that I can say thhey changed about the movie was toning down the rape scene in the movie, but that was appreciated on my part.

I can't say much about this since I usually watch the movies before reading the books, just how it turns out for me. also, the ones that I have read before watching the movie, the movies just suck ( Twilight, Chronicles of Narnia). The one movie I haven't seen, which I have read the book first, is The Hunger Games. I'm hoping to see it soon so I will get back to you on it.

I really think the HP films did a brilliant job considering the amount of content in the books although I don't like how little scenes were changed around slightly and tiny things that I loved were missing.
Eragon was god-awful and was nothing like the book at all.
I haven't actually seen that many adaptations. I try to stay away from them.
For the Twilight films...I'm kind of split between loving and hating them. The effects were great but the acting was...appalling. RPattz looks nothing like how Edward was described (not that I'm a fan of Edward any but it's the principle of the thing) and Rosalie was supposed to be unbeatably beautiful...but she wasn't. They do follow the story well though.

^^and not to mention Kristen's acting skills. She makes me want to tear my hair out. She is always looking depressed when Bella does show more emotions than frowning.

Agreed! The only emotion I've seen on here outside of depression throughout the entire series was on her birthday in New Moon when she said "kiss me" and that was just the tiniest of eyebrow lifts.
It makes me wonder whether I should bother watching the Snow White and the Huntsman. The film looks good overall but I'm not sure if I could stand her acting "skills".

LOTR and it's various other books.
I gotta go with the fanfiction for Twilight, I have neither read the books nor seen the movies, reasons why will not say, for those that do indeed like the series.
LOTR is the only one I can think of that I have enjoyed... Well I guess there are the Clive Cussler books...

Yeah, LotR is still the one book adapted to a movie that I really loved and that, despite some changes, was amazingly close to a very complicated story. Not to mention all the love for details when it came to costumes, props and everything.

Generally, it's a family rule that I have to read the books before seeing the movie. There's only been a few times where I've seen a movie first.
LotR is one of the best movie adaptation out there, but I still have to force myself to see it as a movie and not as an adaptation because there were so many things that were changed, even some major plot points like the scouring of the Shire.
I thought of the most part the HP films were pretty good, especially Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2.
Also, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was an excellent adaptation of Narnia. Prince Caspian failed epically in my opinion, and Dawn Treader did a decent job.

Same here. I hate to watch a film before I've read the books, which is why I haven't seen the Hunger Games yet. Still have yet to read them. The only ones I haven't done it for is LOTR and I don't have the time to read a book that big any more.

I loved the Lord of the Rings movies. While, yes, they did make some major changes, I did like they removed part of the first book. Reading the first book tends to drag from the hobbits' trek from the Shire to the Inn of the Prancing Pony.

Yeah, it was inevitably that they had to cut something out, and I prefer them removing a whole episode that hasn't much meaning for the rest of the story (Tom Bombadil doesn't show up again save being mentioned twice, and the only important thing there was that the Hobbits got their swords). If they had shortened every episode a little bit, I believe the story would have suffered more.

The only movies I watched before reading the books are The Hunger Games and Eragon (I didn't like Eragon and The Hunger Games was okay, but not interesting enough to get me to read the books).
I loved the LOTR adaptation, Gone With the Wind, North & South (the Patrick Swayze version), Pride and Prejudice (2005 version with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden), The Chronicles of Narnia: the Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (with Gene Wilder... I hated Johnny Depp's version - it made absolutely no sense at all).
I'm sure there's more movies made out of books that I liked, but I can only remember these titles from the top of my head.
P.S: Oh yeah, and I love the BBC's Sherlock series with Martin Freeman (he's playing Bilbo in the upcoming Hobbit movie!) and David Cumberpatch (I think that's the actor's name, anyway...)

Johnny Depp's version I found hilarious but it really creeped me out at the same time. His name is Benedict Cumberbatch (greatest name EVER!) and I love that programe too! I prefer Merlin though. Anybody else seen that? The dynamic between him and Arthur is so adorable!

I wish they could have kept Bombadil in the movie, but I know why they had to take him out. He wouldn't have made any sense except to those who had read the book. For the most part, I'm okay with the omissions; it's the additions or changes that bother me. What were they thinking when they killed Saruman in the middle of TTT?
I do really like Sherlock and that TV show made me want to get reading the books again. So far, I've read three novels (one I had read before seeing Sherlock) and about half of the short stories in the first volume.
Personally, I extremely disliked the 2005 P&P. I don't think Keira Knightly fit the role of Lizzie at all. I prefer the BBC TV series instead.
I found The Hunger Games to be pretty good and was extremely thankful that I had read the entire series before seeing it.

But I'll try to - I'm watching Criminal Minds right now and am at the beginning of season 3 where Rossi first came in. I'm doing a marathon of it until I get to the last season and then I'll go watch Merlin.

Good because it's really worth watching. One of my favourite series ever along with Doctor Who.

Hunger Games I thought was a very great adaptation of a book! I was very happy with it! I could also say the same for the first 2 HP films. GoT is also a good adaptation from book to TV.

I actually thought that Deathly Hallows part 1 & 2 were better than the book, especially the showdown between Harry and Voldemort. They did pull a lot of good scenes that were in the books and change a few, but over all I thought they were better.

it's the additions or changes that bother me. What were they thinking when they killed Saruman in the middle of TTT? To tie up lose ends? In the book Saruman died during the Scouring of the Shire, which wasn't filmed at all. Even so there were complaints about too many endings from the non-readers. I wasn't too happy, either, but it was probably better than just having him vanish and everyone complaining that they didn't learn what happened to the most prominent bad guy. (As Sauron can't be called a guy any more )
