If you've explored the fanfiction world, you've seen them. Absolutely wonderful pieces of fanfiction that haven't been updated in years! Makes you cry, doesn't it? Lets list our favorite never-finished reads!
Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past by S'Tarkan - the first (and one of the best) of the redo fics I'd ever read!
What is Right: Year Two and An Aunt's Love by Emma Lipardi - What is Right is another redo fic; part one is done. An Aunt's Love involves Harry being forced by his Aunt into getting professional therapy: better than it sounds!
Harry Potter and the Forgotten Shards by wargear - Harry discovers and unusual method for becoming an animagus.
The Sleeping Dragon Wakes by AncientzDream - An excellent Independent/Powerful!Harry
Walk on Water by Dark Eyed Seer - The killing curse affects baby Harry, making him super intelligent.
Heir of Slytherin by rayama - Voldemort makes his secret grandson, Harry Potter his heir in order to become Lord Slytherin.
The Hogwarts Apprentices: Gentry Green by Lisa Roquin - Super hard to find fic where Harry becomes an Apprentice at Hogwarts.
His Own Man by Crunchysunrises - another redo fic, but still well written.
Grief, Deception, and Hope for Freedom by AnnF - Harry attempts to find independence and closure after Sirius dies; Neville is heavily involved in this story.
Even though these are all incomplete, I still recommend them! I even read them again and again!
I would love for there to be a "finish-a-fic" section where people took a stab at completing stories. I would definitely read them!
Edit* I had Dark Phoenix by SofiaDragon on the list, but it turns out that after years of not updating, it was finally updated a few months ago! Yay!

Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived by The_Santi - Awesome Harry at Durmstrang with a twin-brother and living parents story On the Way to Greatness by mira_mirth - best Slytherin Harry story I've ever read Team 8 by S'Tarkan - Best Naruto story I've ever read, though probably abandoned Also, I'm kinda bummed out cause JBern has said he'd be making a sequel to The Lie I've Lived but I see no sequel  |

Luna The Moon monster has an amazing series! It is call Amulet of Time, and four out if five are completed. But she has this list of ones that follow the fifth one. But she hasn't updated in forever and it's depressing. He is still on my fav author list for just in case. That is always the first one I think of for unfinished.

One fic I'd love to see completed is Jeconais's Wild Horses. It's not a Harry Potter fic - it's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer one - but I've been waiting for just over 7 years to see it completed. It seems to have been abandoned, and I'd love to see it finished.
Also Reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by Keep on Rockin' - it was the first Reading the Books fic I ever saw that brought in Hermione's parents for the reading, and hasn't been updated in coming up to 2 years now.
Harry Potter and the Quantum Leap by Seel'vor - hasn't been updated in coming up to 2 years now. Great redo fic.

Luna The Moon monster has an amazing series! It is call Amulet of Time, and four out if five are completed. But she has this list of ones that follow the fifth one. But she hasn't updated in forever and it's depressing. He is still on my fav author list for just in case. That is always the first one I think of for unfinished. I do really enjoy that series for the most part, but I've never been all that interested in Harry's son/ancestor/descendant, so I've been content with the story ending at part 4. I have Luna the Moonmonster on my favorite authors list as well! One more I'd forgotten to add to my list: Grief, Deception, and Hope for Freedom by AnnF - Harry attempts to find independence and closure after Sirius dies; Neville is heavily involved in this story. |

Flames of Betrayal is amazing. I went on a Harry in Azkaban reading spree ages ago and found that story. I can't believe how manipulative Dumbledore is in that story

OH, readingwizard4 there is a Harry in Azkaban story that I have been looking for and I can't find it.
While in Azkaban, Harry was trying to get his animagus form, but was unable. He was put to death by being burned, and got his animagus form of a phoenix at the exact right moment, was reborn as a baby phoenix, transported himself to some park somewhere, and then turned back into a human (a baby).
All that happened in the first chapter (or two), so I think I am not giving too much away. The bulk of the fic is about him growing up again away from pretty much everything and everybody.
Does this seem familiar to you at all?

I mean, why don't you just tell everyone you're going to be copying his story... that actually is a pet peeve of mine, when the author says "this story is inspired by whatever" and then they just plain copy it. Mine would have elements of KIP, but it wouldn't be a copy. If you've read Knowledge is Power, you would recognize the basic idea, but otherwise it would be different. |

True, using an idea and giving it your own spin is one thing, but blatantly copying the whole story another matter altogether.

Unfortunately, it is something that occurs much too often these days. I'll admit I've taken a few ideas from other stories, but the difference is I usually send them a PM and ask, or change it a lot.

At least you are honest about it, which many aren't. But I believe it's pretty hard to come up with a completely original plot anyway - there are so many stories out there that soneone else will always have had the same idea before you. Or you have actually read something like that looong ago, forgotten about it and think it was your idea. That may happen sometimes, too. As long as the story is different enough to have the same basic idea, but a different way to execute it, I think that is okay. After all, it's said there are only 6 plots overall, IIRC.

Yes The Ashes of Hope sounds familiar. Been awhile since I've read it but I remember it. Pretty good premise. You say it was adopted and continued by AlysiaStorms? I will have to look into it. Another good unfinished Harry Potter in Azkaban story has to be Harry Potter and the Dementors of Azkaban by Blue Skyes101. Harry discovers something about the Dementors and they help in the war effort. I know this goes against the topic (it's finished) but Betrayed by katieydidnt was amazing as well. Harry is freed from Azkaban, wins the war, goes muggle, his daughter is magical has hard time accepting it but gets drawn back in anyway. Susan Bones and the Prisoner of Azkaban by joemjackson and The Lady of Azkaban by SuperXBrother are good unfinished stories as well. The first one has Harry thrown in Azkaban for the murder of Cedric but Susan figures out Harry didn't do it and goes from there. It gets a bit cared away at points but thats why I like it. The Lady of Azkaban is where Ginny is thrown in Azkaban after Chamber of Secrets but only Harry believes she is innocent.
