Same with me at the start but it tended to annoy me because it didn't really stand for anything. Maybe it is used as some sort of border or eye-catcher for the words?

Here's one: Hermione wearing a skimpy two piece bikini. I know it's not that big of a deal, but really, think aboUt her character and values. She doesn't parade around in bikinis! I always saw her as a one piece type or maybe a tankini, Ginny would be the bikini.

I dunno about that one, actually.
There's a reason there's a trope named 'beware the quiet ones'.
Just because Hermione is studious and quiet doesn't mean she wouldn't wear a bikini.

This isn't much of a pet peeve in a fanfic's content but more along the lines of the summaries. What exactly is the purpose of the ! inbetween say time-travel!Harry? I know I used it on a thread way earlier but I had a bout of brain deathness before posting. I just never understood why authors use ! between two words. I don't understand the whole "!" between words either, but I know that when I see it I get annoyed and don't want to read that story. People need to know that summaries really do show the nature of the stories (e.g. good or bad). If you want people to read a story then make the summary look nice. the whole "!" thing looks stupid in my opinion. Why can't they use a dash? Something that isn't a punctuation and makes you think that it is the end of a sentence (which it really does that to me, the reason why I get annoyed when seeing it.)

From what I know, the exclamation point is used when the main characteristic of the character is AU. ex Dark!Harry. Harry is one the light side, but in this example, Harry would side with Voldemort.
I think in the case of time-travel!Harry, it's wrong as Harry did time-travel and time-travel is not a characteristic.

I've actually missed out on some good fics because I see the ! and automatically assume that the grammar is bad. Then I go back and read them and think of why I missed it.

But obviously I am by far not the only one to not know, so that doesn't help the author much ...

Here is a description of the origins of the "!" fanlore.org/wiki/! The link did not mention it, but I also saw a theory that it has to do with tagging systems that do not allow spaces, but I don't buy it too much, since people usually just tag with the character names, not the character's characteristics. I don't believe that is necessarily indicative of bad grammar in a fic. I'm sure that the author knows that is not the proper place for such punctuation in real life. To me, it has always indicated a really defining characteristic for that character.

Here's a bit more about the origins in x-files fandom and apparently, its connection to action figures: fanlore.org/wiki/Talk:!

pet peeves...where to begin...well my number one peeve would have to be Ron bashing...i cannot stand it i mean yeah he's flawed but really bullying Hermione into marriage or giving her a love potion?? she's supposed to be the smartest witch of her age im pretty sure she could work out if she was being given a love potion. Also people that complain about Ron being a jerk and unsupportive and leaving...its called character development people, which JK works on throughout the series.
I also avoid Harry/Hermione fics and Harry/Draco fics because those are both just unrealistic to me as well as ones where Harry is a creature/has super powers i mean i know its fan fiction and all but thats kinda ridiculous

Text talk. That has got to be one of the worst. I mean, you're writing a story, not texting a friend!

Two thing I dislike One is when harry time travel the past and has to keep it a secret from his parents all story long. Two Change the final pairs on reader without warning from the writer

Another detail that irritates me: In many fics where a trial under Veritaserum is held, the answer to the question for the name is accepted as proof that the serum works properly. How does that make sense? It would only prove anything if the person was polyjuiced. But admitting his name - particularly when it is someone well-known - doesn't prove anything, least of all that the serum works.

Lol! That's a very good point.
Something that annoys is when nearly half of the summary is taken up by the phrase "No good at summaries" or "Story is better than the summary". That's just stupid. If it were a book, it would need a damn good blurb to get me to read it and that's what the summary is.

Story better than the summary? Particularly when the summary is already full of spelling mistakes, I find that hard to believe. It would have to be a heck of a lot better than the summary to be readable.

Never looked close enough to find that out. My principle is, if they can't even write a summary that's understandable, then I won't read the story, as it is going to be worse.

Well, over the years I tried a few despite a bad summary, but there were few where I got far. For some reason, my tolerance level for constant misspellings, even after the author being told repeatedly, is rather low. The story itself has to be very good to make up for it - and most aren't.

The knowing looks that pass between Hermione and Molly just because Harry & Ginny look at each other or something. That is soo annoying, especially when Hermione can't tell what's in front of her own face!

Agreed. I can't stand misspelling if they go on past the first 2 chapters. Most of the time I give up after one. Especially if they don't get a beta.

Oh lord Phoenixwing38214 That is so annoying. Hermione is so blind its not even funny yet in stories it happens. It really annoys me when Molly does it, it sounds like she wants to manipulate it so it does happen. I can understand why Ginny gets pissed with her brothers when they don't want want her to date anyone but she hates Fleur so it seems hypocritical to me. I want one of them to say (in a RtB series or something else) we don't want to be stuck with a git (like Malfoy or someone else) for a brother in law for the rest of our lives or something like that. I also get annoyed when Fred and George get on Harry about dating Ginny. I think they would be cool with him. Ron I can understand the best mate thing. For Bill and Charlie I can see it since they don't really know him
