I figured we needed one of these threads. Since politics are always a tricky business and can lead to much anger and irritation., here are some house rules:
1. No Flaming (This is first and foremost a RtB forum so I have no qualms about locking this if it gets out of control) 2. Please respect other points of view. 3. Please respect the candidates. (No, Obama isn't a Kenyan Muslim Socialist and Romney isn't some Polygamous Cult Fascist) 4. Don't smite people over their political views (I can see in the security log who exalts and who smites people, and I'll be keeping an eye out for those who abuse it)
Now that that's over, let's begin!

Can't say I like either canidate and I doubt I'll vote this year. Then again, I have not been a fan of any of the last three election's canidates. I think it is about time a Independant takes the reigns of the US so we can at least have a breath of fresh air, you know?

Really? You can see the karma/smite thing? Oh man. Reminds me of the time I was on my phone earlier and accidently smited someone while browsing. Forgot who I did that to, otherwise I'd give them back a bit of karma.
Ahem. I really do hope those who aren't yet voting are still paying attention, as this is their future that is being affected. Does anyone have any good links for our candidates position? I'm supporting third party myself (and intend to vote that way as I had last year. Go American Independent!) but it would help to know just where our candidates supposedly stand in regards to the middle, which is where most of the votes are.
I'm gunna just say now that Obama is likely to continue a second term, unless he somehow manages to screw something up this summer.

I am going to have to go with you Trilonias and say Obama will have a second term of office. Romney just seems to be a very weak opponent against someone with as much appeal as Obama. I think the Republican's just did not have anyone else to compete with the Pres. When you have choices like Newt Gringrich, Herman Cain, and Ron Paul being strong opponents in the primaries, your having a weak selection to chose from.

Could we just have someone who is for the middle class and teachers, firefighters, unions, civil rights, making people pay their fair share, etc?
Wait, that require a politician to have a heart.

This will be the first election in which I'll be able to vote as I will turn 18 in September. I did my best to pay attention to 2008's election as I knew I'd vote and I think I understand stuff decently.
I would rather have Romney mainly because I don't like Obama's policies and disagree with a lot of his stuff.

I generally don't have an opinion because I'm not following it at all. I barely follow the elections for Prime Minister as it is. I've never voted (though I'm old enough).
I say Obama though.

From what I have read so far, I would still vote for Obama, if I were allowed to. He's not perfect, but the lesser evil. Some of what the Republicans stand for makes me rather uncomfortable.
But as far as I am concerned, it would be much more fun if you could *deduct* points in these elections instead of giving votes, and who gets the least amount of points taken away wins. It would be such a lovely way to punish these selfish, corrupt politicians. Here I find it mostly hard to decide on anyone, because they are all equally bad. And the few who are don't stand a chance anyway.

Much as I would like an Independent to win, I simply don't see it happening. It's just my opinion, but it seems to me that the majority of Americans appear to lack critical thinking skills; the sheeple just go with whoever sways them with shiny words. I doubt most even bother to research each candidate's view on issues.
As for me, I will vote for the candidate whose viewpoints align most closely to my own and has a chance at winning. So at the moment, Obama would have my vote. I'd rather Clinton be the candidate over Obama though; her views are more closely aligned with my own than his are.

I think US is screwed either way, and I'm seriously considering moving to a different country if everything continues the way it is.

If you do that, don't come to England and definitely don't go to Greece. England sucks right now (especially the weather) and Greece is... well I'm sure you'll have seen the news about it. Australia is the best bet I think! It's where I'm going asap.

Australia is the best bet I think! It's where I'm going asap. Well, Germany isn't exactly a beacon of hope, either. And Australia ... hm. Politic is not any better, and the weater is getting around the bend there completely. Floodings at one side and droughts and fires at the other, increasing storms, loss of power on a rather frequent basis ... that's what I keep hearing from my friend there all the time. What makes you think that other countries are in a better situation than the United States? Exactly. Our politicians are way too much like Fudge - power-hungry and ignorant of problems that don't concern their pockets.

I don't like any of the candidates, so I'll probably do something silly and write in someone like Vermin Supreme if I can just to say I voted. Also, from what I've heard, Australia has its own set of problems, but I admit it's probably the next best choice. >_>

Why not just vote for Harry Potter? Or, coming to think of it, in that case I'd try Aragorn Elessar Telcontar

Honestly, it doesn't really matter who you vote for ... they are inevitably going to either:
1) Do the exact opposite of what they promised to do in order to get voted for
2) Be completely incompetent
3) Do stupid/and or illegal things and get caught, creating scandals.
4) Some combination of the above
5) All of the above
Seriously. I think the last time America had a half-way decent president that didn't screw everyone over or have sex/vote buying/some other brand of scandal blacken his term, was Abraham Lincoln.
No, I'm not bitter and jaded about the electoral process and the Presidency, why do you ask? *sarcastic smile*

We had a pretty good run of Presidents from 1933-1960 with Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. Even Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon had their strengths.

From my history classes, I think Regan was a decent President as well. At least he managed to lower the national debt, which is currently a major problem.
Personally, I think we need someone who has logic. If they have that, it means they can think well and thinking well is the first step to figure out how to solve problems without causing more of them.

I think we can also blame that on the alzheimer's that started to be noticable near the end of Reagan's first term. I just don't understand why these older (e.g. 70-80) politicans think they can be president. We need younger minds for president in these modern times. You can already see how the old politicans think of the internet with them trying to shove SOPA and PIPA down our throats.

Any guy who believes we should use zombies to generate electricity has my vote XD. Aww, no fans of Canada? Though our prime minister is an idiot, and we have no great opposition, we have maple syrup and you can rest assured that we won't riot and take down Parliament, That being said, I want to say on a serious note I don't know if Obama will win. A lot of what I've seen on Obama's popularity doesn't seem too positive. Romney's not much better, so I really think it'll be a close vote. I completely agree that the Republicans are terrifying in their beliefs. Personally though, I think the world has reached a point where we need a hard ass leader somewhere. Obama had potential, its just that his hands get tied with the Republicans and well, the politics of everything. What he world needs is another FDR, or JFK, or Thatcher or even a Mackenzie King again. Or Nixon, almost forgot Nixon.

The only problem is that most hard ass leaders are the most hard when it comes to fill their own coffers and these of their rich friends, and the small folk can go hang themselves. We have had a party in power here whose beliefs are very close to the Republicans, as far as I can tell, and people are by now so fed up with their bigotry and greed they FINALLY go downhill. About time. That's one of the reasons I would rather have Obama - seen the alternative up close for way too long already.
