I just wanted to let everyone know that I am not an author, but I have been a follower on fanfiction.net for over ten years. I love the Harry Potter read the books stories people write and was outraged when this witch hunt started. I made a point to write an abuse email to the people who own/run fanfiction.net telling them that people who have accounts are abusing and harassing other authors on this site by targeting ther stories getting them deleted, and then bragging about it. I wanted to know if people can do that and delete other peoples hard work, why cannot other people report and have the witch hunters removed. I still have not recieved an answer, and it has been three days.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if they ever reply. By now they should have noticed that they aren't very popular right now and won't own up to the whole mess. Besides, I am sometimes wondering if they even care enough to read the messages in the first place ... Coming to think of it, I'm still waiting for an answer to a mail I sent them in 2004

If that's true, that's hilarious and fanfiction is pathetic. If it's not true....it's still hilarious.

Actually I can see that happening given how much they have been messing around with the coding of the site over there.

I was trying to get them to add another Genre list. Kind of weird that they two Genres, but we can only choose one to downsize the list of stories we are looking through. Unless, of course, you are in the search, but then you have to type in words.........what if you aren't wanting to search for certain words but just the Genre and the character pairing? It sucks!
*off soapbox* you can go back to whatever you were talking about.

yeah I have seen better filter systems, like being able to chose what pairing you DON'T want instead of just the characters you DO want. The characters in it aren't always synonymous with the pairings. They also don't have a Slash/Het filter which I think a lot of people would appreciate.
They also don't have an abuse filter. Some people don't warn when they have abuse/rape in their fics.

Yes I have more then once gotten through half a story only to learn the pairing was not the two in the subject line...
You know the Slash/Het filter would be really nice as there are days I only want to read that sort. Same with the Abuse/Rape aspect.
So they need more ways of narrowing down the list of what you want to read.

They really do. The security on there is terrible. and the search system isn't much better. Sometimes the only way to find the fics you want is to trawl through every HP fic (or whatever section you want to read in) and find it that way but that would take forever. Sometimes Communities help, like for the reading the books fics I usually go to "The Books We All Love, They Read" but with this purge they deleted all the fics they had from there which was 998. They're trying to post them all back on but haven't got very far.

Yeah, when I want to read a Hurt/comfort/friendship of a couple I have to use just the hurt/comfort then search through all the Hurt/Comfort/Romance and a bunch of other Genre groupings to find them. Or I have to go to search, think of a word to search for and then filter that down to Hurt/Comfort/Friendship and the pairing I want, that still sometimes doesn't work because of the stupid rules they have for the search (i.e. no words under 4 letters).
That was why I asked for another Genre filter since the stories usually have two.

I know how you feel!!! I was so mad when this creep on Fanfiction.net was reporting all my favorite Harry Potter stories!!! It made absloutely no sense. That person shouldn't have tried fanfiction if that's all he was going to do

Actually what offends me the most is that it is censorship! Whole stories are coming down because readers think they aren't appropriate, per persoanl views. They even post on other sites how fanfic and others should thank them for 'cleaning up the site'
After all the work done to save sites like fanfiction from SOPA and such, to allow this...
You would think the fact that tehse people are rpeorting multiple stories in an hour should give them a clue.
I wonder how many stories and members they will loose to this, not to mention sponsors...

I wonder how many stories and members they will loose to this, not to mention sponsors... And money too, since I'm guessing that they use their own money to pay for the upkeep of the site.

Some LJ sites and twitter accounts if you do searches just right on the web, you can find them. One of them is actually doing a count of how many they get down, and someone actually had a post about how glad they are getting all these stories down to make the site better for everyone else...
The way they worded it, it sounded like they were going through trying to find stuff to report that they don't agree with... to me that sounds liek they are trying censor fanfic, no?

Yes, it sounds like it, particularly as they only target certain types of stories. Really, there are lots of stories out there I don't agree with, either, but I won't report them, my method to deal with them is the back-button or not even reading them! Literature is down to taste, no matter if it's a printed book, a fanfiction, a newspaper or whatever you are reading. What annoys me might leave someone else gushing and vice versa. Everyone has to decide for themselves what they want to read or not.
Besides, if they have a problem with the legality of the stories, then I can only say that all fanfiction is using other people's property and could be considered illegal, so that's not really an argument for me. Most authors are aware of these fanfics and don't complain, some like JKR even were flattered. So, what's the problem? If the author doesn't want fanfiction made to his/her work, they can always tell the site owner, and it has to be taken down, that's clear. I know some authors are forbidden on FFN, too. But that's a decision for the author, not for these self-styled guardians of the net. IMO these types just have too much time on their hands and need to feel great because they got the better of someone, while not being able to write properly themselves.
