Even though it's sad that they're stopping it, it would be amazing to see what you would do with it.

I think that The Weasleys Read Harry Potter 7 by ForeverPotter17 was just deleted, I updated her profile and couldn't find this one anymore, but The Weasleys Read Harry Potter 6 is still there.

just wondering, does anyone who writes these stories ever save the chapters on their computers? why can't they just repost the chapters under a different name or something?

I think FF Net might have IP tracker system in place also. I don't think that most people save it to their computer. When they upload their chapters to FFnet, they delete it from their system. It free up space on their computers. also I think FF Net might have IP tracker system in place also.

Why? Now they're simply doing what that "person" probably wanted all along.

I believe I know of one other writer who is taking down his/her fic as well, but it might be because he/she doesn't know that this is over.

Before you guys get angry with me for how this post is going to start, make sure you finish reading it first becasue I am actually a fan of this genre of fanfiction.
I can understand how these fics are breaching the rules of fanfiction.net and copywright laws in general, even with disclaimers, though I don't agree with how they just remove them with barely any warning. It's because anyone who hasn't actually read the books but has heard of this genre of fanfiction can easily track one down and read the books without ever having to pay for them. It's essentially an easy way of illegally downloading them. I know most people wouldn't actually do that and I'm sure most authors would be horrified to think their fics were being used in this manner and at the fact that they were "betraying" the Harry Potter (or other) series, but that is the truth of it.
Saying that, I am a massive fan of these fics and I'm sure that over half of the fics on my alert list are actually "read the books" fics. I'm very pleased that this forum has been created so I can possibly keep reading my favourites! I just thought you all should know the reason behind the deletion (apart from a certain author we're all rather angry at right now).
Also, there is an author on the site who goes by the name of Lord Kelvin who has created a bot-like programme called Red Bootton which he uses to delete fics he believes don't deserve to be posted on the website. I think he has passed it on to a few other authors that agree with his ideals. He goes after every type of fic he believes to be "unworthy" of being publicly read, including fics with bad grammar/spelling mistakes and certain words/phrases. I'm not sure whether he goes after "read the books" fics or not but it's a possibility so thought you should all be warned. I'm not sure if fanfiction.net knows and/or approves of such a thing but it's there.
Signed
A very concerned reader =P

The author of Exploring Harry Potter's Life as reposted her story on ff.net. She seems to think it will be alright as of now to repost and such. She is now slowly posting the story as I write and wishes for some reviews since she was almost at 1,000 before taking it down.

Yeah, I found another by searching the forums with the words "Deleting" and "Stories. Their forum is TLO's Reported Story Archive. They have given a list of what stories they have reported that have been deleted and they sound so happy about it! they also have a very VERY small list of stories that they have "saved" (probably by hounding the poor author to death). It is kind of sickening. I mean, good that you are trying to help people, but good grief! try to be nice about it and don't threaten to delete their story just because of grammar and spelling. You gently tell them about their mistakes and suggest a beta reader. That is what I've done.

the thing is that this TLOspyrogirl (I think that is their name), doesn't have any written stories themselves, only favorited ones.
Update: Dang it! almost my whole favorites list in Delete_the_Clutter's list!

there's an update in Heart of Aiur's profile. Well guys, I sent the petition but I don't think much is going to come of it. I was quickly and bluntly directed to the guideline section of the website where it has:
Version: 11-20-2008
The chapter system is not to be used as placeholder for non-story content such as author notes. You can add short author notes to the beginning or at the end of stories but never as individual chapters.
FanFiction.Net is not an archive for non-fanfiction literary works. Please visit FictionPress.comto publish your non-fanfiction literary works.
Do not upload chapters, series, or segments of a story as separate entries. In order to submit a 5 chapter story, for example, use the 'Create Story' page to submit chapter 1, and then use the 'Edit/Upload chapter' feature in the left menu, after login, to submit chapters 2 through 5.
Entries not allowed:
Non-stories: lists, bloopers, polls, previews, challenges, author notes, and etc.
One or two liners.
MST: comments inserted in between the flow of a copied story.
Stories with non-historical and non-fictional characters: actors, musicians, and etc.
Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc.
Chat/script format and keyboard dialogue based entries.
Actions not allowed:
Multiple entries of the same material.
There can only be one copy of any unique story on the entire site. No exceptions.
Rewriting names of characters/locations of one story in order to upload to multiple categories.
Copying from a previously published work (including musical lyrics) not in the public domain.
The guidelines. Pay attention to it people. I checked the site's rules, and most "CharacterX reads Story/Series that CharacterX is from" fan fictions violate both emphasized rules. And they're not new, they've been around for more than three years.
Furthermore: In the Terms of Service that every Profile maker must agree to:
6. User Submissions and Conduct:
D. In connection with User Submissions, you further agree that you will not submit material that is copyrighted, protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner and the necessary consents from any individuals whose personally identifiable information is contained in such material to post the material and to grant FanFiction.Net all of the license rights granted herein.
I guess that's it; The rules are there and easily accessible.
I guess that now they're going to report every songfic out there too, and every story with a celebrity. That's insane!!

The weird thing is, it seems like it was tolerated by ff.net. Otherwise they would have done something against these fics, without having to be reported first. luckily this place was made as a sanctuary.

unless the admins on that site are just extremely lax and don't pay all that much attention to what goes on on their site.

Well, the songfics were banned, but they hadn't done anything to stop it. If you go to wikipedia there is some interesting facts there about the site and the people who run it. That is where I got the whole thing about the songfics.
Also Delete_the_clutter has a new message (and a new name....very weird). It is simple:
"Kill the spiders, to save the butterflies. It's logical until you realize you've become a spider yourself."
Make what you want of it.

I think I can explain Delete the Clutter's message. He PMd me an apology and said he was taking those favorites off of his account and stopping reporting them. So that message is a way of saying, he tried to report what he thought were illegal fics but he realized he was acting like an idiot in doing so.

Plagiarism is so wrong always needs to be stopped, but people need to stop being self-righteous about it. Before you condemn everyone, read the definition of plagiarism
(Definition: Plagiarize - to copy another person's idea or written work and claim it as original)
Almost everyone, who writes “Read by the Characters” stories, says in his/her disclaimer something along the lines as
. . . Everything in bold, underlined, or italic is not my work it is [insert author] . . .
So claim it as original they do not.
