Am I the only who thinks that what Dumbledore did at the EoY feast was completely uncalled for? I mean honestly? Humiliating a quarter of the school's population for the glorification of three students? Could imagine being a snake for that feast? Especially the first and seventh years? Here's a fic I wrote a while back. It shows the Slytherin's reaction from the POV of an OC who hasn't been getting much love www.fanfiction.net/s/7349682/1/Wounded_Pride I think it explains my point. I know some people address this in their fics but even more brush it off because "they're Slytherins." -_-

It bugged the crap out of me. Either he could have done it before the end of the year, or he could have explained the reasoning much better. To me, it reminds me of what Snape does in Knowledge is Power by Fettucini.

He deliberately walks into Harry in an empty Hallway, and then takes 5 points away, this is right before the end of term feast. When they get there, Ravenclaw (the house Harry is in) has lost the cup, by five points

Yeah. If you haven't read it, I really do suggest you check it out. It sucks that is was abandoned, but the story is still amazing, and it spawned quite a few themes that people have today, the most famous IMO being Quidditch Superstar Harry.

I think that Dumbles behaviour at that feast was the first occasion that really showed me that he wasn't a good Headmaster. Now, please understand, this isn't meant to mean as a comment on his whole character, but a Headmaster's first and foremost duty is to be fair and respectfull towards all of his students. And Dumbledore might have meant well, but he was never equal in his actions towards students from different houses. And that is just incredibly unprofessional behaviour. I lost all respect I had for his character at that point already and it never returned in the following books.
(Of course, this might be because I was 19 when I read the first book, and a lot more sensitive to stuff like that than I would have been a few years earlier...)

I think it was horrendous to do that! Can you imagine doing that and thenbeing able to look all those children in the eye? You've got to be damn near heartless to to be able to do that and not wince. Seriously I think if I was a teacher there I would have burst into tears, no matter if I was a head of house. That's just not how things should be done. It's no surprise the Slytherins hate his guts and wouldn't trust him. It makes me wonder why Snape even follows his every order after that. He knows from his years at Hogwarts that Dumbledore isn't fair towards them (Marauder bullying, Sirius almost killing him and getting nothing but detentions). It's no wonder he tries to give Slytherin points wherever he can and take points from the other houses if the Headmaster is just going to award Gryffindor in bulk at the end of the year.

I use to think snape was cruel for doing that to students other than slytherin but when you put it like that u make a good point!

I actually read a nice little story where they had the "real" events of what happened with the Sirius/Snape incident, and to me it made a lot more sense.
Essentially, Snape already knew Moony was a Werewolf, and had made remarks that he would "let it slip" (sound familiar?) and have Moony executed by pureblood bigots. Sirius dared Snape to go because Snape knew about Moony, so there would be no danger and he didn't expect him to go. Snape used a sleeping potion to knock out Sirius and Pettigrew, and went anyway. The reason Sirius only got detentions is because Dumbledore knew Snape had baited him, and he knew he went there on purpose, and was in no danger and only using the incident as an excuse to have a "rabid werewolf" put down.
The entire plan was for Snape to frame Moony, and have the Ministry execute him. Sirius daring him was just a plus, because he knew he could use Sirius' words to have a reason to go, not only having Moony executed but also framing Sirius for "attempted murder"

Thank you. I've always believed it though, because it's true. It may also be because he truly is quite a cruel man in general but this would certainly fuel that cruelty. BTW I'm a Pottermore Slytherin AND a Slytherin fangirl too! ^_^

They're far less hypocritical and when they have certain principals, they stick to them, not flipping and changing what is right and what isn't.

I just like them because they aren't ridiculously dumb when it comes to things, and they think things through.

Viralic, that sounds like an interesting story, and it makes a lot of sense to me. Always thought there had to be more to the whole story than we learned from the books.

I agree with everyone. I thought that was very uncalled for. Dumbledore could have done it in private instead of humiliating an entire house. It seems to me he did it to Slytherin because they're the 'bad guys'. I think Slytherin is my favorite house next to Ravenclaw.

Yeah, it was not fair. It's not as if the reason why he had to hand out these points had happened only five minutes ago and he didn't have time to do it before. It's just sowing more animosities. And that's the one who is preaching house unity *snorts*

Do you think his prejudice of slytherin house started because of Tom riddle?
