It does, but there's nothing that can be done. We'll just have to deal with it. =/

Language shouldn't be a problem. I guess smut is. I personally don't have an issue with it as I'm a firm believer in "If you don't like it, don't read it", but I have to defer to the ProBoards staff for this.

Gnovella and I have a small sex scene in the RP but we'd already decided the other day that we'd start it with one charcter going in for a passionate kiss and finishing with panting. Use the imagination for the rest.

Ah, so it's the smut... *is relieved*
But still, if there's one thing I hate, it is trolls from FFN. =/

Well, to be fair, it's not like there's a whole lot of RtBs out there WITH sex scenes.

True... and if it isn't a troll then there are no hard feelings, (mine doesn't have sex in it, so I'm fine), but if it is because of a troll, I'm going to be very peeved off.

So, just to get the entire point of this topic condensed into one post:
In my opinion, sex scenes don't really belong in a RtB fic to begin with. If someone complains to me or Point about a fic, we'll see that that the complaint is taken care of one way or another.
Nevertheless, I'll be quite peeved as well if I find out that anybody here is from a group like Critics United (AKA Cyberbullies) and is reporting to proboards itself, 'cause Proboards won't just come in and delete the offending topics, they'll delete the whole fricking board.
Also, like Point said, foul language should be fine (though don't go overboard or we may start using a word filter), and implied sex scenes should be fine as well, but no outright smut please.
To that end, and I'll be making a separate post about this later I think, ALWAYS keep your fics backed up on either your hard drive and/or your flash drive and/or online storage unless you want to lose them. If we end up being forced to delete something for whatever reason, it will be gone, end of story, and there will be no getting it back unless YOU backed it up.
Sorry if it sounds harsh, but that's the way it is. If anybody wants an invite to Dropbox (a free, secure online backup site that I love to use), let me know. You could join without an invite, but it's better to join with an invite because you'll get a free extra 500 MB of space.

Skydrive works as well as a backup location. If you have a hotmail, just type in Skydrive and log in with your hotmail accoint. It can hold up to two or three gigabytes, but if you use it for backing up your stories, than it is more than enough.

Heck, for that matter, you can use Google too, I believe. I just prefer Dropbox because of how it works.

I love Google and have over 50 documents there. Plus, it has the great advantage that you can give others access - that's how I am working together with a friend on a story and how our beta goes over it. Copy/paste between Google and Word works perfectly, too, including the formatting.

For most of my stories, I have them stored both on google docs and on my computer. I need to go through and check to make sure everything's in both places, but I'm one for storing things several places in case anything weird happens.

Wise. That way you don't lose everything in case the computer crashes. I'm using an extra HD for backups, that works rather well, too.

I use an "Airy CN Memory" flash drive (8 GB) to backup my stories - and I'm really happy with it. CNMemory is incredibly reliable, it's really cheap, and it's small enough to carry around in a wallet: p.gzhls.at/502272.jpgAnd I additionally backup my stories in my usual computer backup on an external hard drive. AND I always keep a printout of my stories in a folder on my book shelf. If all else fails, paper still is the most reliable medium.

Does anyone know how many warnings proboards will give before taking a board down?
|
|
|
Post by Kitty279 on Jul 26, 2012 14:21:42 GMT -5
And how are they secured against people who try to get boards taken down just to feel powerful, have a personal vendetta against someone or the like?

|
Post by viralic1 on Jul 26, 2012 14:25:33 GMT -5
They aren't really. It's an unfortunate choice, because no one has the staff to check out every complaint, but if they don't, boards could be taken down falsely.

IMO they should only act when they get a concrete link and at least try to check that out before taking down a whole board. But that's me. Others may see it differently.

Well, that's the thing, they did have concrete links. Also, while I don't know for certain, the only safe thing to assume is that we will get no more warnings on this matter.

Then the answer is pretty simple: stop posting stories with "adult material" in it.
Personally, I think those kind of scenes don't belong into an RtB fic anyway. And if someone absolutely wants to have a sex scene in their story... well, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to write the story in a way that it could be read without the explicit scene, while keeping the option open to send the scene by pm to those reader who are interested in reading it.

This happened with another fanfic board I'm a member of that's hosted by Pro-boards and they were told to pull their Lemons subboard even though it was password protected and you had to personally email the board administrator for the password to prove you were over 18. Apart from that they've not had any problems with the board they're just ubber strict on that content and I think from what that board's administrator said they periodically glance through a selction of posts on the site I don't think it's necessarily down to complaints. Beside's lets face it we were hounded off FF Net for the reading character's stories not content based so I doubt it's the same trolls - if it is they really need a life. There's loads of stuff on the internet that could keep them amused and occupied without getting their kicks from causing problems for others. :-) Keep smiling though peoples at least the board speaks to us and doesn't just act from on high in glorious silence until after the fact.

To be honest, a lot of those trolls (specifically CU) seemed to be more concerned about enforcing the rules. Good on them and all that. They'd be a lot better if they didn't come in with a holier-than-thou attitude all of the time. They might not get so many complaints. I looked at their forum and noticed that they're ignoring all complaints now which makes me pretty annoyed.
All the same, it kinda makes me tempted to go through all there member's stories and scour them for any slight rule violation. Then I remember that a lot of their stories suck IMO, so w/e.

I guess you'll all probably think now that till now I lived under a rock or something but what exactly are those Critics United? I've never heard of them until I read about them here so I tried to google it but I just found some blogs where people complain about them being rude and unprofessional. So could anyone fill me in, please?

That's the group that went and mass-reported RtB (Read the Book) stories on FFN, or Songfics or whatever they think is against the rules. They are always going on about how others ignore rules, but frankly, the way they go about it, they are bullies and nothing more. Their actions are how this board came to be in the first place - to give authors a new place to post the stories which were deleted on FFN.

You can post nfic to www.yuku.comA proboards that I belong to had to do that. However, I've never really thought about adding nfic content to RTB stories.

Can you please tell me where you picked up the term "nfic"? I haven't seen it used in ages. My previous post just really shows my age in fandom years ;D I first heard it in the Lois and Clark/Star Trek fandom in the 90's and it's stuck whenever I think of adult fics.
