It makes me laugh, because I can read some of the japanese characters whenever I see a superdry tshirt or something, so I know what the letters are and tell anyone who'll listen  |

I can read Russian rather well (at least the printed letters), though I don't understand more than a few words myself.

it did take five years of hard work... Personally, I don't think it was worth it. I feel bad for the girl translating my story, she thought it would be a one shot and im planning a multi chapter. |

Yeah, that's another reason it feels more difficult. I can't stand doing something without getting good results. Aha, the girl translating mine knows it's multi-chapter, but it's so long that I feel bad for her. Especially since it's not even done |

Well, the beginning is hard, but in that regard, I believe Russian is much easier than Japanese. At least they have only the normal alphabet, plus some extra letters, so you have to learn a limited number of new letters. Some are pretty much like here, too. When you have learned these letters, then things get much easier. Of course, I can't say anything about the language itself, but my cousin learned it rather easily (and then later married a Russian), so I guess it's not that bad. These poor translators! Be nice to them  |

I agree. Sad story, but somehow a bit original. Most people who do that kind of stuff, do it with Fred and George. Colin and Dennis is nice..

lol, I've tried using the google translator for a story that was in spanish.....I gave up after a while. Kitty, on youtube there is an awesome Quenya translation of the book of Genesis. I found it when I was looking up the language so I could hear it. the girl who is speaking is italian so her accent makes it more beautiful sounding because of the sing song way she is doing it. BTW, I didn't realise that there was another page.  sorry for interrupting the topic line.  |

But it's interesting that such things even exist - didn't know that! And I believe these Elven languages have to sound rather melodic. Much nicer than some of what we mere Mortals are used to. Hm, I might even ask our resident Quenya translator what he thinks of this video, just out of curiosity. No worries, happens to all of us when catching up. Besides, both topics are completely OT for this thread anyway, so what is the difference? |

And all because Ithiarel congratulated in German But it can be fun. On another board, someone posted about something and mentioned she's German. So I answered in German, then some of the US regulars who understood jumped in, then others joined, and suddenly we were throwing around half a dozen languages in the same thread. Completely OT, but very interesting and a lot of fun, trying to work out translations and comparing notes about similarities, false friends, problems ... Ugh, autocorrect ... my AIM doesn't allow me to turn that off for good, and it annoys the heck out of me. Always keeps turning my British English into American one and auto-completes words the wrong way before I remember to switch it off for this exact discussion. That thing can no English at all! |

Indeed. When you talk in RL with someone, you hop from topic to topic, too, so I don't really see why we should do it any different here, even if it sometimes makes it harder to find something again.
Oh yes, it was one of the most memorable threads. What you and your friends do sounds indeed like a lot of fun.

It does, I think that's how we came up with a variety of theories. We've done that a few times, got a few weird looks. Her boyfriend got irritated because he only knew two of the languages and couldn't keep up, so we don't do it as much in public anymore. Can't displease her honey |
