lol, I've tried using the google translator for a story that was in spanish.....I gave up after a while. That bad? Thanks, even if I can't hear it. But it's interesting that such things even exist - didn't know that! And I believe these Elven languages have to sound rather melodic. Much nicer than some of what we mere Mortals are used to. Hm, I might even ask our resident Quenya translator what he thinks of this video, just out of curiosity. No worries, happens to all of us when catching up. Besides, both topics are completely OT for this thread anyway, so what is the difference? Oh, it was very bad. It left some words in Spanish, the some descriptions were way long because the words we would use in English aren't translated in Spanish so when expressing something they have to describe it differently. They also left some accent marks, like the upside- down question mark. It was so confusing trying to figure out what something ment and get your mind to to acknowledge the accent marks. I'm sorry Kitty, I forgot that you can't hear. It has the words on the screen, you can see how it looks. It actually looks as it sounds, very fluid. Describing the sound is like watching a bird glide in the air and then go up and then drop down, so graceful. If you do ask you friend to listen to it can you tell me what he says? I'm interested in what he thinks. Yeah, I know that we always go off topic around here. I guess after years of being on boards, I used to the "not going off topic" rule for threads. A lot of the boards I'm on will deleted your messages or move them if they are off topic. Also if you double post, even if the posts have different content in them, you have to have another person post between.

He's an ass, but meh, I just go with it. He's got his moments of funniness, and the two are a cute couple, but we don't really get along well. He's just got too much of an attitude.

Oh god, I hate people like that!
And mountaingirl, I've been on boards like that too :/ it's nowhere near as fun, the conversations die really quickly.

we have the whole language barrier here. We have a few swiss-german people. The interim leader is swiss-german and when I talk to him another will come up and he will switch to german. Kind of weird, like it seems they don't want me to know something, but they've done that to everyone. they will talk to you in english, but when someone else who is swiss-german comes it is all another language. Kind of rude in my eyes, but I've learned to live with it. I can also catch words here and there since I know a little regular german.

Try learning about space travel, the science stuff that is a whole other language on it's own. I'm having to research space travel for my original story. my poor brain melted after reading a few sentences on light years and such. thank God for friends who are interested in that stuff. Heh, my major is Aerospace engineering so I know precisely what you're talking about. And yes, space travel is included in "Aerospace." Mostly, though, in these days it's satellites and rockets as far as space is concerned. I'm helping to build a satellite, as a matter of fact - it should be launched into space sometime next year. Cool stuff, eh? Also, yea, those strict boards suck. They also tend to have mods/admins who will not hesitate to ban you if you criticize them... >_>

They also left some accent marks, like the upside- down question mark. It was so confusing trying to figure out what something ment and get your mind to to acknowledge the accent marks. Ugh, not good. It may allow you to get the gist of what was said, but otherwise, I guess you are better your own translator as long as you know the language. No lazy way around do-it-yourself No problem, dear, I can't keep straight who is suffering from what here, either. Too many people with health problems. Sounds really lovely. And if I remember to ask my friend about it in the next email, I'll tell you. There are boards like that out there, that I know, but I never have been on one. Too restrictive for my taste, and it suffocates the discussion. My very first one, 10 years ago, was the total opposite - we always joked that getting OT was a requirement for regulars there. It was a HP board, but we actually talked about pretty much everything there. And no one stayed on topic. There was that thread where we were suddenly talking about Star Wars instead, just as an example. Finally, as we kept talking about it, someone started a Star Wars thread. Guess what we talked about there after some posts? Right: Harry Potter We soon gave up even trying to keep that under control. Another one I am still on has some categories, and if a thread is started in the wrong one, they will move it, but mainly for easier finding (many there only look at certain categories). Normally they don't complain about people getting OT during a discussion, the Admins only interfere when discussions get out of hand or people are insulting. So I never even learned to stay on topic, lol. we have the whole language barrier here. We have a few swiss-german people. That's so cool Shotgun! I've always been interested in Space, it's something I was considering for University If only I was somewhat capable in physics...

Same here. Maths and pysics and me don't go together. My brain tends to shut down when I have to do more with numbers than just add them with the calculator :/

I'm good at Math, but I just can't grasp physics that well. Well, no, I understood it, but I can't apply it. It's why I prefer biology and chemistry. I'll probably choose a career along those lines

I've done up to NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.
I'm alright with adding and multiplication, but when it comes to taking away and dividing, I'm totally hopeless. I need a calculator for that. Algebra was awful. Even though I did good at it, I just didn't understand a word of it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's pants at Maths When I took the exams for the general certificate of secondary education, I ended up with - to put it into wizard terms which we all understand - a T in Maths and an O in German. Says everything that is to say about my abilities

Ha I got two Os each in English and business, but a T in Japanese and a P in Maths, if we're doing it like that

In Wizard sense, my worst subject this year was physics, which I got an A in. I got O's in Math II and English, and an E in science and Math I, but I skipped three weeks of my first semester since I got a really bad stomach infection that time.

That is indeed rather rude. I'd understand it if the others didn't know your language, but that doesn't seem to be the case. yeah. I mean, it is cool to hear different languages all in one place, but it's kind of bad when that person is talking to you in your native tongue then get taken away and start talking in another language. I guess it is a habit for them, plus it probably is easier for them to speak in swiss-german. They still are having trouble understanding some of our words, especially the slang.

As long as they are alone, it's ok for them to speak Swiss-German. And I could understand them using a German word now and then when they don't know the English one. But when you are with them, courtesy would demand that they try to stay with English or at least apologise and tell you they are sorry, but for them it's easier to talk in their own language. Besides, how are they supposed to learn it better when they don't use English? Oh well, it seems it's not only here that manners seem to get out of fashion.

Ooh, math is terrible. My father is a former math-teacher. He was really disappointed in me, when I was younger. I was terrible to the most obvious ones. But yay, if everything goes after the plan, this is my last year with math ...
