I think they have their place. The whole thing with FF.net is a load of crap, they could have simply added a warning saying there was adult content, or require an account to read "MA" fics.
I do find it interesting that a story can have extreme violence, child abuse, language, and references to drugs and be rated M. However a story with no language, little violence, and no mention of child abuse, but a sex scene is rated MA.

One of the things I never understood about fanfiction. In the beginning I stumbled over some stories that were, to put it mildly, cruel and beyond gory, and no one seemed to find it wrong. But put even a tiny moment of anything sexual beyond a chaste kiss in and they are screaming blue murder about how the poor kids are harmed. IMO knowing a bit about sex harms them much less than reading these horrible torture scenes, described in morbid detail. Really, what have these people for priorities?

well to be Fair there were quite a few extremely discriptive Fics that were more MA than M. I figure if I want M or MA stories I will go to AFF where they also have a better warning label system letting you know what is in a story before you actually click on it.

Sure, the rating was not always accurate. But what annoys me is that they allowed them for 10 years anyway and then started deleting without warning. Besides, why not add a MA rating and make sure that people have to give their age before being able to read it? Technically it's not that hard to do, LJ has something like that. Then they'd be able to avoid the whole mess. Besides, the danger of someone accidentally clicking on M rated stories is rather small considering that the default setting is K to T, so you have to actively allow M rated stories.

I'm okay with M rated stories in moderation. I generally tend to read the ones that are rated for language and violence. If it gets into anything sexual, I'll quickly skip to wherever it ends, sometimes reading dialogue if it looks like it's important, but otherwise not paying attention.
Even then, I rarely read M rated ones. In fact, the majority of the ones I have in my favourites list (The Professor Muggle series) are rated for langauge.

Sounds very like mine, though I tend to skip the sex more out of boredom. Too spoiled from the good old days. And for me it's mainly the language, too (though sometimes I really wonder how it makes M necessary!)

For me, I'm not too fond of sex scenes in fanfics. I feel as though they take away from the overall story.

The occasional one is ok, but too many I have read (or rather tried to read) end up forgetting the initial plot and end up a sexfest *sigh* I don't need sex every chapter, and the world around them can go to hell because they are too busy having sex.

I have had very low opinions on the Nazi's at FFN for a long time. I hesitate before writing anything sexual period though If the muse is vicious I will write sex scenes. My main beef is when they give men.....shall we say.... unrealistic sizes. I also hate how (This is in Naruto) they make Kurama way over endowed in the boobs department, when they make it a female.
Don't get me started on the badly done over abundance of Harem stories.

Ah yes. All these stories who were comparing Harry's size ... And I never understood why he needs so many wives just to make him seem more important. It's not realistic in the least and rather puts me off.

*gag* I HATE HATE HATE Harem fics. Just, no. They're too unrealistic for me.

I have run across one or two Harem/multiple wives fics that were done well, but they're exceedingly rare.
One in particular, can't remember the name or where it was at anymore, it's been a long time since I read it, had Harry getting with Tracy Davis and Daphne Greengrass in order to save them from becoming Malfoy's (and by extension, Crabbe and Goyle's) playtoys. To get them both away from Malfoy, Harry had to use an old, rather nasty law that essentially made the girls property.
It's a lot better than it sounds, trust me ... dealt with realistically, and in the end, Harry figures out how to undo the damage, and because they were forced into it in order to save their lives, both girls eventually leave him.
Other than that one and maybe one or two others, multiple-partner fics are inevitably painful to read.

Harry Potter and the Sisters Black was a surprisingly well done harem fic. Yes it had a lot of sex, but at the same time there was a great plot to it. It was sad that a lot of people talked crap about it because the sex involved wasn't just straight vanilla.

I can SOMETIMES understand Harem fics within the Naruto fandom seeing as they have the Clan Restoration Act, where if there is one remaining member of a clan, then that member would need to have have a few wives to hve enough children to get the clan back to a decent size. But these fics have to be done tastefully for me to read them and not be just about the sex.
I think sex scenes should be more acceptable than violence and abuse fics and maybe even fics with poor grammar/punctuation. At least a well written sex scene can be considered sexual education in a way. Before I started reading anything with sex scenes I would have been terrified when it came to having sex, feeling worried about not knowing what to do, but now I would be a bit more confident, because I don't like the idea of watching porn, this is the best way to learn a few things. And I'm more than old enough to know what's realistic and what's not when it comes to sizes and what most people would like.

I've always thought sex was just a natural part of life, so I don't understand why everyone has to bash a fic that has sex in it. TBH, it's entirely unrealistic to think that a place like Hogwarts doesn't have people going at it like rabbits.

Very true. And a more realistic idea of what children can read might help to cut down on underage pregnancies, too. With that paranoia about them seeing anything even remotely sexual, it's no wonder when so many kids have no knowledge about the whole thing and its repercussions.

Oh yeah. If I ever have children, I'm going to try my best to teach them to do it responsibly, instead of just hoping they learn on their own somehow.

Also, any kid who isn't old enough to know even the basics of sex shouldn't be on the internet without someone supervising them, in my opinion. It's not healthy for a kid that age to spend much time in front of a computer, anyway. I started Sex Education at 10 yrs old. If a child younger than that is online without parental guidance that's just ridiculous.

I lived in a inner city. I knew the basics by the time I was 7, and I learned it responsibly was 8.

Then what is the issue with 16-year-olds reading a sex scene? That prudery is doing more harm than good. But then, from what I heard children in the US were punished and even expelled for kissing another child, and if that's true, it's mind-boggling for me. Here, anyone demanding punishment for that would be the laughing stock. Actually, it's 'in' for teenagers to kiss in greeting and goodbye recently, and no one complains.

It is, and it's complete crap. It's a reason that I'm considering leaving the country. There was a school somewhere, I think it was Georgia but I'm not sure, that instituted a rule that if a student was holding hands with someone else, they could be suspended for up to five days on a first offense. Honestly, I think from what I know, the average American parent is completely stupid, no offense to any parents on here.

WHAT?? Sorry, but from an European viewpoint, that's ridiculous. I really don't know what to say to that ... what on earth is wrong with holding hands?? As a parent, I'd tell the school off for such rubbish. And if they want to prevent any intimate relationships, I don't think that's the way to go. It will only cause resentment and drive the children into hiding it *shakes head in disbelief*

It's not just a European standpoint, it's from a human standpoint.

That sounds like Umbridge is running those schools! I know people were kissing in the playground at 11!

Thats super weird. In Canada we don't have anything like that. I mean, my school has kids smoking out front, making out, etc. If you want drugs, every third person knows where or who will supply to you. By fourteen the school board makes sure that every kids knows the mechanics and consequences of sex and where to go for condoms, what protection to use, what planned parenthood is, etc.

Which sounds great to me. It's one of the reasons I'm honestly considering moving to Canada, I just don't know how college would work, if credits would transfer over, etc. I don't want to do American school for four years, and then find out they won't accept my degree over there.

They probably will, plenty of people go over to America to study and come back. I think a few courses may not even out, but any professor/counsellor should tell you. They definitely except American degrees if your planning to work here, not do further studying.
