I think it's possible that the root of our problems lies in the fact that our new home was advertised in a lot of places. There's no chance that at some people in CU don't know about this board and I'm willing to bet they reported it to proboards. They wouldn't of even had to register. I'm definitely going to be making the forum a bit more private. I've already turned on Forced login, and I'm debating about turning on the feature that makes it so that staff has to approve new members. Or possibly temporarily disabling registrations altogether
A Yahoo! Group might be a good way to go with this. I'm not too familiar with Google groups, but if they're better...

The mailing list is by far one of the more attractive options, though I will be using my little area of Googlesites to either have my stories backed up or available to read.

What I don't understand is why someone from CU would want to continue to bother us. They got what they wanted for the most part, so what was the point in hassling us here? We've done nothing to them!

Wings, Kuma, some people just want to watch the world burn. lol. Also, CU's whole thing seems to be forcing people to follow the rules, and since this whole forum's pretty much against the rules, they might've just decided to skip warning and go straight to reporting
Of course, I can't rule out that Proboards noticed this by themselves, but they have more important things to do, really...

I don't understand either, but in their eyes, we should be stopping altogether, and they won't rest until we have. That will never happen, I'm a big RtB fan, and will never stop trying to write RtB fics, unless I somehow get fed up of RtBs, which is unlikely.

@ ShotgunWilly - temporarily disabling registration might be a good idea. At least until things have calmed down, and we have found a solution. Also, if you delete the boards tomorrow, would it be possible to leave the "discussion and review" boards there? They don't have any fics in them, and I'd hate to loose the reviews people wrote for me... Besides, they are a great way to talk with people about my fic, without having to clutter up the general area...

Whatever it is, a privatized board sounds much better. Ugh! It's just so frustrating feeling like CU's won..

Honestly, I get told my fic will be deleted this morning by a cu member, I spend the whole day arguing with said cu member, and then I find out that the cu members have wrecked this too. Not. A. Good. Day.

What about tumblr? That's fairly open - free to set up an account and easy to follow people to get the stories. Or yourfanfiction DOES ALLOW these kinds of stories, as long as not ALL the book text is included - even if you just miss out a paragraph and keep the rest there. They have their own category for RtB fics as well.

These measures sound good to me, at least for the moment. For what it's worth, I support Ithiarel's suggestion to leave the discussion/review parts.

Well, there are ways to get around this, right? We'll find a way to make it work, I know we can! Yes, it's irritating that they've bothered us yet again, but we can find somewhere to belong, right?

How are we sure it is someone from CU? I've been checking their forum and not finding one mention of RtB stories

Seeing that they have been doing that for months, Kuma, they don't need to start talking about it again.

Might can just move them and make them into a Sub-board for stories posted on other sites or what have you when we get this sorted out.

According to yourfanfiction: "When posting in the "Reading the Books" category, do not post the entire original work, please only post snippets. By this, we don't mean that you need to remove so much of the original text that your fiction doesn't make sense, but to keep only the important parts, the parts the characters are reacting to. We'll use a Christmas Carol as an example: Instead of saying; "Scrooge picked up the book and read the first few sentences. Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.Scrooge gasped. His friend had only died a few minutes before hand, how was it possible that this had already been put into print?" Or: "Scrooge picked up the book and read the first few sentences. Marley was ... door-nail.Scrooge gasped. His friend had only died a few minutes before hand, how was it possible that this had already been put into print?" Try saying something similar to this: "Scrooge picked up the book and read the first few sentences. Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.Scrooge gasped as he continued to read. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.His friend had only died a few minutes before hand, how was it possible that this had already been put into print?" This is quite a crude example, but hopefully it demonstrates how you can include enough of the original text in this section to make the fiction make sense and enjoyable to read, without copying down the whole book. If an author posts something with chapters/paragraphs omitted, that is classed as posting snippets and is fine under our rules. We would never suggest that you should post fictions with only reactions and no text because we understand that it would not count as an RtB fiction. We also agree that in order for the fiction to count as RtB, it would need to have the original wording and we're not suggesting that the original wording cannot be included.
What we do ask, is to not type up the entire text of a book and post it. Even if you post the whole book and leave out a paragraph, this will still count and be fine. What we don't want is for someone to be able to read an RtB fanfiction and get the entire book there for free when they should be buying it."

Yes I agree with blackroses. As long as it is not facebook I am all in for the other options. And the solution I would like the most is a format like now where not the stories are posted here but only the summaries with the warnings. And then everybody who wants to read the fic says so in a post and pm's the author with his e-mail address. And of course leave a separate topic for reviews.

That makes sense, particularly for longer paragraphs or parts where there are no comments in between. If they are fine with it, then that could work, particularly for people like me who usually don't really read the book text any more, but only occasionally skim over them to make sure where they are right now. If I need the whole text, I still have my books, after all.

Well but normally I really don't like the fics where there are many big paragraphs of book text. So the fics on this site would still hold much of the original text which would also result in a copyright claim someday.

Urgh! First FFN now this. I am staring to believe that no place on the internet is a safe haven for us anymore. I myself like the mailing list idea, but since I know nothing about google or Yahoo groups, I might have a hard time with it. I mean, I am one of those computer illiterate people who need to be told what to do step by step, but other than that, I wouldn't mind sending updates of my story to people who want to read it using email.

You know, yourfanfiction.com might actually work for me, too. It would take some getting used to - but since I've only just started writing, I would only have to rework one chapter. I'll have to think about it...

This suck. However an author on FF.net named "je-writes-hp" posts his fics under google docs and seems pretty safe. That might work for the moment.

HEY EVERYONE! I JUST STARTED A YAHOO GROUP FOR READING HARRY POTTER FANFICTION. I INVITE ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN AND POST THEIR STORIES THERE. THE GROUP NAME IS VERY EASY SO THAT PEOPLE CAN FIND IT. IT'S 'READING HARRY POTTER'. YOU CAN ALSO EMAIL THE GROUP AT readingharrypotter@yahoogroups.com.

No. Thanks, but no. Don't get me wrong, it's not the idea per se... But I really don't like you screaming at me like this. And I'd much rather find an idea together with the others than just run off rashly...
Please, let's think about this and decide on what to do with a clear head. Being rash won't help.
Unfortunately, I won't be online tomorrow, so I'll just have to read up on what you all decide.
Just, if at all possible, Willy: Keep the Discussion and Review Boards. Pretty, pretty please.

I'll try. I'm thinking about making someone an admin for the day to help 'cause it looks like this is going to end up being a pain in the ass just because of how the Proboards ACP works. I think I can do that much. >_>
Anyway, I'll be back in a few hours, I need to concentrate on RL stuff for a while.

If any of you are posting your stories somewhere else, can you send me a link, please? For now, it might be best if you write yourself a list with the authors, whose fics you are interested in reading, and then wait how things will turn out. As long as you have their usernames noted down somewhere, you can always send a private message to the author through the board and ask them for a link (or how they are going to post their stories).
