I can deal with different possibilities, too, it would just be easier if most would do the same. But we'll see.

Hey, I didn't read the whole thread, and I am sorry if this idea has already been shot down. But does anyone know what J.K.'s feeling about fanficion is? How she would feel if we asked her for permission and gave her a few samples to read?

Hey, could we make a poll or something? I'm really confused about this stuff (Just read the entire thread, took about 25 minutes... and I don't know what half the stuff was about.) I'm terrible at technology stuff, so could someone dumb it down for me?
Oh, and if theres a reading list, add me too!!

How she would feel if we asked her for permission and gave her a few samples to read? No, no one suggested that. From a quote posted when the whole mess on FFN started, she seems rather pleased and surprised that people write fics about her world. The RtB stories, however, are probably a bit different, as they include the whole book, that's way beyond normal fanfiction. The problem is that people can get the book that way without having to buy it (and at least one person here admitted that she does just that), and that's not in the best interest of the author

:/ I might admit to that, if this wasn't a public forum (and that was not a confession. Ask my friends, I say suspicious stuff all the time) Although, hypothetically, if I HAD done that, I'd like to point out that I'd probably already have paid for the book in question, and then lost it (Again, NOT a confession ) I'm good at losing books... *ashamed* but of course, this is all hypothetical and it never happened

Lol - my bad conscience is very limited because I have paid my part already. All seven books in English (twice - sent a friend a full set as a present), the first few plus the textbooks in German, too. No one can say I do read them here to save the money for the actual books.

I own the first three books on Faroese, got them from an aunt. Otherwise I've read all books in the library, both on faroese and english.

I've got all seven books, as well as all seven on my kindle as well - I tend to just skip over the bold text to read the comments.

Same here, save a quick look where I am right now. After the 20th time I don't need to read the bold parts any more.
There have been times when I could find every name or quote in the first four books nearly blindly, but that's been a while ...
Well, said friend deserved it. Besides, that way I got her hooked - and two out of her three sons as well, so I consider it a success ;D
No problem, I understand how you meant it.

Seriously? Why don't people take the time to at least skim through the topic? The plan is simple: ShotgunWilly will delete all story boards within the community by this evening. The rest (the General boards, and the Review and Discussin boards) will stay. Then, each author will have to decide for themselves how they want to go forward. Now, the easiest thing to do is: - Don't panic!
- Keep an eye on the Review boards of those authors you are following, chances are they will post there once they have decided on how to continue.
- PM the authors directly, if you have a question.
I'm simply going to wait a few days for now. Since I haven't decided yet on how I am going to continue (although yourfanfiction.com looks good right now), and my next chapter isn't finished yet anyway, this seems like a good plan. Let's see what everything looks like in a day or two (namely, when ProBoards deadline has past).

Yeah, it's probably best to step back, take a few days and work out the most feasible solutions.

I have been checking out Your fanfiction and it seems like a good place to post the stories. But, i agree that it should be a decision taken by vote which will surely take a few days.

I think ultimately each of the writers have to decide how they want to make their stories available to their readers. Based on how things have happened the past few months it seems that it's just a bad idea to have a central location online to get these stories. Looking at this message board, at least 1/4 of the stories never actually got posted on here which means that either the authors had trouble figuring out how to post their stories or they just didn't bother trying.
As an example, I happen to be an LJ user and I would agree that the safest thing would be to post their stories on personal LJs rather than create a community to post them. Or you could create a separate LJ so that you wouldn't have to worry about your regular LJ from being in trouble for posting the RtB's if someone spills the beans.
For me personally, I will be PMing the authors I follow (sorry, but I don't like all the stories!) and ask them if I can be part of whatever list they might be keeping of readers that genuinely want to follow their story and not troll them.

To add on, I just checked out yourfanfiction.com and they actually have a separate section for RtBs... I am planning on putting mine up there. I had not yet gotten the chance to put it here or ff so yff looks pretty good so far

If authors go with yourfanfic couldn't you leave out a chapter a book and just send that ch to readers who ask for it in a pm. That's what I was thinking of doing with the story I'm working on.

I think the policy on yourfanfiction is that if a part of the story is left out, it's fine. So, leaving out a few sentences in the middle of a paragraph that they don't comment is abiding to the terms.

From what I've read of the rules on many sites, bobbypingirl101's Mysteries Unraveled is perfectly fine as only certain chapters are used. The only issue seems to be if you put EVERY single word from the books, but only a few chapters counts as snippets and is perfectly fine.
I'm debating whether to do the same with the story I'm about to write to protect myself.

Leaving out ch and/or paragraphs ruins the story imo so I would still write them and just email that to any readers that want it. That way if I just leave out one ch a book I should be covered under their policy.

I think the basic idea is to leave out a very small section that the readers would probably still know. This section I just grabbed is from BFTF 5 and the bolded part is from OOTP.
"Sorry, pup," apologized Sirius.
"It's okay, you hated being shut up in the house," said Harry with a smile.
He followed his godfather to the bottom of the steps and through a door leading into the basement kitchen.
Mr Weasley and his eldest son Bill were talking quietly with their heads together at the end of the table.
"I thought the meeting was over," said George.
I took out It was scarcely less gloomy than the hall above, a cavernous room with rough stone walls. Most of the light was coming from a large fire at the far end of the room. A haze of pipe smoke hung in the air like battle fumes, through which loomed the menacing shapes of heavy iron pots and pans hanging from the dark ceiling. Many chairs had been crammed into the room for the meeting and a long wooden table stood in the middle of them, littered with rolls of parchment, goblets, empty wine bottles, and a heap of what appeared to be rags.
Even with the gap, the story still flows. I think doing something like this every so often will work.

That actually sounded pretty good there and did not lose anything over all need given everyone knows the story already.

Yeah, so remove long passages of description and you should be a-okay.
