"He had us all duped," said Modor mournfully, "Which is such a shame, really. I remember when I first heard of you, it was said our leader was taking a mate. When I saw you, I was instantly jealous. How could Acrix have earned such a lovely mate, for doing nothing at all? Then the years progressed, and we only got worse off. I then began to feel regret. Someone like Acrix didn't deserve you as his first wife, and you were simply being wasted away. I hope, in time, in the glorious future I'm planning, you'll find a better mate, one deserving of you."

"And I hope that you find someone worthy of you as well." Noxra replied, feeling rather embarrassed by the way Mordor kept paying her compliment after compliment. Arcix never paid her much attention during the height of his reign, and even less when they became imprisoned in this barren land of ice and snow. Back in the better days, when they managed to eat every day, Arcix had mated with five other females, all of them lovelier than herself. What could Mordor possibly see that he couldn't? "It is only fair, seeing as you've done your part to help us."

"You know," said Modor seductively, feeling her inhibitions leaving and her trust, "Back in the old days, I once told my mate, that if I could have a chance, I'd want to have Noxra as my mate. Of course, I know it's rather forward, since I've done nothing to deserve your attention, but I hope, someday, you would consider me. Though, Acrix is far more handsome than I."
The last part was bitter honesty. Acrix was the better looking. However, Modor had done what he couldn't. He had brought warmth in a time of despair. He had brought promise. Nothing he did now would be regretted.

Noxra was stunned by his admission. So Mordor had affections for her way back then? Had she been too wrapped up in being the mate of the leader to see what was right in front of her? "You've done plenty to gain my attention." she told him, placing her hands on his cheeks in a show of fondness. "Even before you brought the warmth. I was just too foolish to notice. But I do now."

"I'm glad," said Modor huskily, "A creature as stunning as you doesn't deserve someone as pathetic as Acrix. Let me be show you a world of promise. No one will fault you for leaving Acrix when you did."
He brought his own hands up to hers, and then laced his fingers through hers. He brought her hand to his lips in a show of affection, while holding her gaze in the darkness of the cave. In the light, he was blind. Here, in the darkness, he could make out every little detail.
"Imagine it," he said in a seductive, impressive voice, "This very cave, filled with the cries of humans, as we consummate our love. Our children would gorge on the warmth, and the flame creature would continue to bring us humans while feeding us her own warmth. These barriers that keep us here, locking Acrix up to pay for his sins. You would be the Queen of a new realm, of a new dusk. The world would be cool and dark, and we could have each other at any moment we pleased."

Oh, she could just picture it now! A life of never-ending warmth and food. A dark, beautiful world, rife with the cries and screams of humans. Let them suffer as they did. No more would there be a deep emptiness inside her, and no more would a dementor be made slaves to those worthless sacks of meat and flesh! She could see everything so clearly, and imagined the passion that would form between her and Mordor. Yes, he was plain, but his want for her was genuine. That alone was enough.
And to be Queen of a new dusk, with him as her King...hadn't that been what Arcix promised her? Only, that had been a lie. But Mordor brought warmth, and humans were coming too! Everything would change, and for the first time, a dark, brilliant future awaited them.
"I can see it so clearly, Mordor. And I want it. All of it. " She then removed her hands from his, and removed her hood. "I'm yours."

Modor gaped upon her beauty. She had beautiful blue-grey skin, her jaw was strong. She had empty sockets for eyes, perfectly rounded sockets. She was like a skeletal vision. How had Acrix let her go for so long? Why had Acrix never given her due attention? She was the most beautiful haunting vision he'd seen!
Trembling, he raised his hands to her face, and ran them over, his fingers brushing her lips. Her strong, curved jaw was perfect to tear out a human soul. Never had he felt so complete than in this moment. He brought down his own hood, facing her with a greedy look in his eye. For his first mate, he had taken the loveliest.
"You are so lovely," he said bringing his head to hers, his hands caressing her cheeks, "My Queen."

"And you are wonderful yourself, my king." Noxra said softly, as she looked into his empty eye sockets. On second thought, he didn't look so bad. He wasn't as grand as Arcix, but he didn't need to be. His jaw was firm and strong, his body skeletal and closer to perfection than she remembered. But his most alluring feature had to be the gray-black of his skin, which complimented him rather nicely. Scabbed, with strong, yet thin fingers - perfect for grasping a human's scrawny neck.
She leaned in closer to him, running her hands over his chest. A thrill of something forbidden went through her. By custom, she shouldn't be having these thoughts. Females were meant to serve their mates and provide new babies for their brood. She had stood by Arcix for so long... but no, he had done nothing but ruin them. This time, she wouldn't make the same mistakes.
"Will you still feel this way for me, even when you gain other mates?" she asked him, a quiver of hope in her voice. "Will I always be lovely to you?"

"You are my Queen," he replied, running his own skeletal hands over her, pleasure flowing through him.
Noxra was so different from regular females. She was decisive, she broke the rules. So easily won, so easily lost. She defied the custom rules, and to know she would return to Acrix with the role of good-mate made him want to chuckle, if Dementors could. She was so different from his previous mate, and so much more lovely. He voiced these thoughts to her, their cavern cooling immensely due to the passion waving off them.
"You were loveliest to me before, and still loveliest to me now," he whispered, "Acrix never deserved you. Tell me, my love, can you not feel the desire. A pure, innocent soul, your jaws atop their mouth, sucking it out from within. Something so rare, and delicious. Our children will be the strongest of our kind to ever roam these lands. No other mate will see the darkest depth of these caverns with me, and no other shall be as beautiful. We will rewrite customs! Rewrite history! Together... Shall I continue?"

A thrill of pleasure and desire flowed through her, as she fell deeper and deeper into Mordor's words. He didn't believe in following masters, or working with other allies, and he also showed a secret distaste for the ancient customs. Something that she had come to relate to more and more over the years. The old laws were only harming them. And Mordor saw that. He was a true visionary, and spoke with such brutal honesty...it was unlike anything she ever experienced.
And she hungered so much, too! She longed for the taste of a pure soul, just as he did. Sweet and delicious, something wonderful beyond words! How Arcix could stand to take black souls was beyond her - they were so dirty and vile. She could feel the passion roll off of him, and hear it in his tone. "You were the one I should have been with." she admitted, taking comfort in his thin arms. "But, we have our whole existence ahead of us to make a new future."

"To us, then my Queen," said Modor as he embraced her.
His future had never looked brighter. All thanks to one fire, he would become a King! He'd recreate the future world. Together the two would make their own future! He was delirious with excitement, but he could feel the warmth rolling off of them. Acrix would be waiting. Maybe he should just kill Acrix off, but no, there was time for that. With an eery smile, he looked to Noxra.
"Let us return my Queen," he whispered, "There will be plenty time to enjoy this in the future. For now, Acrix must not suspect a thing. Can you convince him of that? I don't have the strength to defeat him yet."

Noxra felt a deep disappointment at having to return, but she understood. They must keep up a facade, until they could gather the dementors and convince them to follow Mordor. "Do not worry, my King. I will make up with him when we return. I will be happily waiting to be yours." she said warmly, giving him a small kiss on the cheek. That would have to do for now.

Mordor felt a thrill run through his cheek where Noxra had kissed him. He wanted to stay behind, but he knew it wasn't possible. The others would need convincing. Not to mention he wanted to enjoy the feeling of knowing Acrix's mate was his. It would be almost as thrilling as actually taking Noxra.
"Let us go now," said Modor, "Let us return to Acrix."

She chuckled coldly. "Yes, let's." And with that, they started to head off. Along the way, she spotted some of her other troubled kin, who were withering and dying ever so slowly. Something in her hardened. I will do right by them. By all of us. And if that means supporting Mordor, then that is what will happen. It helped that he really cared for her, too.

Modor was thrilled as he and Noxra walkee back to Acrix. He wanted to look down at all the dying. He had been them just this morning, now he was King! He had seduced Noxra! He was going to embark on a glorious future, and these creatures would become his servants. None of the females were as lovely as Noxra, but in time, after being fed, they would perhaps be lovely enough to breed with. His servants would fetch him the purest of souls. He would dine himself like a King, and have the loveliest females as his consorts, the loveliest of all his Queen. Acrix would become like these weak creatures, slowly dying miserably as he watched Modor's reign of power!

When they returned, it was quite clear that Arcix was far from pleased. His anger radiated coldly, and his fists were balled - a sign that he was ready to attack. "So, I see you've returned, Noxra. Are you done consorting with him?"
Noxra sighed. Time to go back to being the faithful mate...at least, for now. "I'm sorry for leaving you, Arcix." she said, bowing her head in submission. "I was just trying to avoid a fight. We need to save our energy for the humans, do we not?"

"Thank you Noxra, for listening to my woes," said Modor, putting back the role of pathetic scrap of soulless husk.
Every inch of him wanted to jump for joy and laugh at Acrix. However, he stayed put. He was thrilled at Noxra's role of faithful wife. It made it so much sweeter knowing that he too had seen beyond her hood. The knowledge of Noxra's disobedience made Modor feel confident and unafraid of Acrix.
"It was pleasant to explain my feelings to someone," he said, enjoying the subtle references. All this right under Acrix's nose! Ha! Take that Acrix!

Arcix glowered hatefully at Mordor. "This is your one warning, Mordor. Stay away from my mate, or I will end you." He grabbed Noxra by the arm and roughly pulled him to her. "And you'd better not disobey me again," he leaned in to her face. "or I will ruin you. Understood?"
Noxra was not intimidated. Arcix was going to be the only one to regret his behavior, not her. But even so, she had to pretend to be meek. "Y-yes dear." she whimpered.

Modor stiffened slightly. It was rumored that Acrix was never nice to his mates, but even Modor had more sense than to mistreat a woman like Noxra. He met her face when she turned around, and then looked to Acrix with cool contempt.
"Of course," said Modor unfeelingly, "She is your mate after all. I would never dream of consorting with her again. I shall be on my way, if you ever have need of me, well, I'm always where you expect me."
The last bit was more for Noxra. He would await her in the caverns, when she could escape the especially foul Acrix.

Noxra took the last line he spoke to heart. She knew that Mordor wouldn't abandon her, not after that confession. For now, she was stuck with Arcix, but only until this battle succeeded. When the others realized that it was Mordor's success that was going to save them, he would be made new leader. And she would be his Queen. And most favored mate. She smiled underneath her hood.
Arcix's grip on her wrist tightened. "Come," he said coldly. "It is about time that you fulfilled your requirements to me." She half-followed, and was half-yanked away from Mordor's retreating figure. For the first time since her youth, she felt hopeful for the future.

Lucinda arrived back into the land she was already starting to hate most. She felt a tremor of nervousness go through her. Icy cold...white...
She shook her head. No, now was not the time to freak out. She could do that later. Instead, she took a few moments to rest, before going back to the forest. Already, she was feeling weary.

Kei stumbled a bit as they appeared. She shivered as she looked around and felt the cold. As a worried mother, she wanted to go back and forbid Jei to ever come here. And Kohl for that matter. She glanced at Harrigan and said offhandedly,
"What a pleasant place."

Harrigan nodded, the cold chilling him. With an attempt at dry humor he replied, "I wonder if the inhabitants are just as pleasant."

"Certainly hope not," Kei replied, she couldn't image anyone pleasant enjoying this kind of scenery.

Fawkes appeared not far from Kei and Harrigan, Rhiannon and Agora in tow. "I'll be right back," he said before disappearing back to the forest.

Agora hated the cold at once. But, it did have a special beauty to it. The sky was dark, and the snow had an eerie, white glow to it.

The moment they arrived, Lucinda went off of Rhea's shoulder and started to make a barrier. It would alert her if the dementors tried anything, and would keep the air warm - without harming the ground below.

Modor could feel the air warm around him. It made his bones rattle, and a wave of life roll over him. He desired to clench his fists around the life, and drain it to fill his body. He relented however. He had promised Noxra he'd be at the caverns. Let Acrix make a fool of himself in front of her, he would stay and be her hero, her King.

Rhea shivered as they appeared. It was freezing! When Lucinda left, Rhea felt very cold until the air began to warm thanks to the barrier. She looked around, gripping her wand tightly and wishing she had tried harder with her patronus.

Instinctively, Arcix felt the beautiful, flooding warmth. It caressed him and at once, he knew that they had arrived. "Come, Noxra." he said coldly, to the form that lay on the ground below. "We have company." He waited impatiently as Noxra struggled to get up, and sneered when she didn't go faster.
"Alright." was all she said, in a small voice that did not suit her.

Lucinda perched back on Rhea's shoulder, feeling rather drained. "There. Now we'll at least be a bit more comfortable." She nuzzled Rhea affectionately, grateful to have someone she could take comfort in.
---
Agora walked off, looking for the best possible place to set up camp. She would devour her whole deer and sleep for a time, before making webs to ensnare the enemy.
