Just thought we needed a thread where we can chat about anything and everything we want to.
Is anybody here watching the Jubilee Concert? I haven't seen any other Brits on here.

I'm not one for monarchies, but from here in the U.S. it looked like a cool celebration.

agreed! I would have loved to have flown over London tonight in a helicoptor. It would have been a beautiful site! Are you adding more of your fic on here? I'm eager for the latest chapter Though I know you're probably very busy with the site atm.

I too am American, but I've been paying a little bit of attention to the Queen's Jubilee. I'm pretty certain she'll surpass Queen Victoria in number of years on the throne.

Ah, I remember watching Comedy Central once, and some comedian came on and he was talking about Queen Elizabeth. He basically said that she's never going to die. And the thing is, I can't imagine a time where she isn't queen, she's been at it for so long, and she's been around since, 1926, and queen for 60 years now. I feel like she's supposed to be Queen until I have children.

hahaha! I personally can't imagine not having the queen either. The money would change!! Pound coins just wouldn't be the same any more! And the old kid's programme The Queen's Nose couldn't exist anymore!

Plus, we'd have a KING, well in Canada at least. I find that weird. But in truth, it's very likely she'll outlive Victoria, mostly because her health doesn't look like it's waning in anyway. I can see her in her hundreds, tiny and still on the throne.

I literally snorted in laughter at that image. If you've ever seen Doctor Who, the part where the Master rapidly ages the Doctor and he shrinks and looks like a House Elf....I saw her like that with a giant crown and a scepter.

I have to admit that I still don't understand who'll be King after the Queen dies. I read some time ago that when Prince Charles married Camilla that he gave up the right to the throne and that Prince William will become King. Is there anything to this or is it already old news?
Anyway, while I do try to follow the monarchy (I watched William and Kate's wedding) I didn't know of the exact date of the concert - otherwise I would have tried to watch it too, but unfortunately I wasn't aware of the date of the concert, so couldn't watch it.

That's a shame. It's was really pretty at the end and the acts were all good, depending on what you like I guess.
I have to admit, even I'm not certain who will be king and I'm British! I THINK it's Prince William though.
I'd prefer Harry as king. He's so laid back and down to earth it's ridiculous. The things he gets up to are brilliant! Want a king like that.
And how great would it be for the HP fandom for there to be King Harry?

lol, I remember watching a youtube video of him jumping in a pool in a bar somewhere in Croatia (at least I think it's Croatia).
I like both Princes, but I have to admit that I prefer William - Harry gets into too many scandals as far as I know and I don't know if that's a good quality for a King...

It's not but it would be hilarious in my opinion. William acts more like a royal than Harry does, that's for sure.

That's probably because he's the oldest and married now. He's heir to the throne and it wouldn't look good if he was in tabloids for scandals.

I don't recall if he ever was implied in a scandal or anything like that. I think he was always the more mature one...

Well, he's always been the one that knew he would probably be king one day. Harry's been able to be a little more wild because he knew he wouldn't be.

She sounds like an awesome Queen. Fanfiction depictions(is that the right word?) of her play heavily in her favor for HP fics(those are the only ones I'm aware of and can think of at the moment).

What are your biggest pet peeves of fanfiction? I know misspelled words, bad grammar, but what are other things you are irked by?

Cliches. Every time I run into a fic that says long lost potter sibling, I clench my teeth. i love fics that take cliches and do them originally, but the sad truth is very few do them well.
And non-canon info. Like saying Voldemort is Harry's father. For one thing, Harry's dad is James! And another, Voldemort hated muggles and muggle-borns! If he even drugged Lily to be his sex slave or whatever, he still wouldn't do that!

I don't like cliches but I don't dislike them either. My biggest pet peeve with fanfictions, besides bad grammar and misspellings, are stories that go on and on with no action - that are too longwinded with nothing happening. I don't care if the author is preparing the scene, but if "preparing the scene" takes over 100.000 words? Then I stop reading. And I love long fanfictions.

Grammar, spelling, and bad punctuation (mainly, a new paragraph every time someone new speaks) are the first things that will make me hit the back button.
I also am not a huge fan of cliches, and even though 'reading the books' is somewhat cliche, I like it when it's different settings, characters, or times. That's the main reason I chose to set my story in 1987. It's a unique time for this type of story, as far as I can tell, and I wanted to not have it in the 1970s, 1995, or next-gen.

Besides bad spelling and grammar: Bashing. Granted, not all bashing. I don't mind bashing that makes me smile, but mindless bashing just makes me grind my teeth. Also, "Dumbles" and "Bumbledore" and such.
I don't terribly like cliches either, but it depends on how it's presented. If it's a well-done cliche, then cool. A badly-done cliche sends me running.
Also, backtracking a bit here, Prince Charles is still the Heir Apparent to the British throne and he is next in line to take over for Queen Elizabeth unless she outlives him (which could be entirely possible at this rate). However, a lot of people think or at least hope that since, in all odds, he's going to be pretty old by the time Queen Elizabeth passes away and it doesn't seem very likely that she'll abdicate to him anytime soon, he'll just abdicate and pass it on to William.

Oh yes, I forgot about the bashing. I hate reading it and hate writing it just as much. I sort of had to write character bashing of Sirius in BFTF 3, but that was simply because no one knew he was innocent. That was horrible enough to write and I don't want to feel the pain of writing real bashing.

If I had to pick a certain time period for reading the books stories, they would be set in 5th year, with Umbridge (and possibly Fudge) in the room (along with professors, various order members, and possibly Amelia Bones). However, I have yet to read one in this setting, that has reached the part in the books about exactly what goes on in Umbridge's detentions. I wonder why that is? I know there exists books in this time period where they are reading DH, which refers back to the detentions and their results, but I really want to read OotP, set during OotP, in its entirety.

I think I even read Dumb-Old-*hore in one of the bashing fics. XD
I've also tried to put the "reading" in a unique timeline - so I decided to put it at the end of Harry's 3rd year. I've read some fics that have it set when Harry's one year old as well.
To be perfectly honest, I wish he would abdicate too, so that William becomes King. And I think that it will happen too - in my opinion William & Kate are doing a lot of public wievings lately and Charles not so much.

I completely agree! I hate bashers! For me, writing fanfiction is like eating cereal with marshmellows. You want to just eat the marshmellows and forget the cereal, but it doesn't work that way. You have to write the characters you love and hate and you need to be fair to their good qualities to the ones you hate, and the bad qualities in the ones you love. Otherwise, the story becomes a gooey mess. Not to mention the way you grow when you write three-dimensionally. It just improves your own skills as an author and makes your stories more respectable

You can't hate everything about a person (well....maybe), there has to be one thing you like about him/her. Also everyone has a good side and a bad side, why just talk about all the bad? BE POSITIVE!
