Exactly. I don't review, when I see these. I don't know. It feels like I'm giving in, if I review these stories. I've always been that way, that if anyone demands something like that, more I refuse to give it.

It really is annoying when I see a story with "I will update when I've got a certain number of reviews".
I didn't bother with the one story I uploaded. I haven't had any reviews on it, but two people have put it on their favourites lists, so I'm happy. I don't much care about whether I get reviews or not.

That and people are review whores. Yeah I've never gotten that, eh not the review whore part but the fact that people get so many reviews on ffn which is great but when I go to other sites barely a handful of people review, what's up with that? Is it like an unwritten rule that only stories on ffn can be reviewed on About the review whores;refusing to update until they get a certain number of reviews is ridiculous and petty. But people asking for reviews don't bother me and I think it's kind of sweet when they get so excited over the reviews they've gotten.

Of course you can ask about reviews, but not demand them. That's what I find so annoying.

Do they? I haven't read several of the stories here. Only the stories I followed here mainly. But I'm starting slow on reading one, and then one later X)

Likes this ... Yeah I've seen the odd review saying "update now" One story I'm reading has a reviewer that demands an update after every chapter and not only do they demand an update but they demand to know exactly when the author is going to update. I find this reviewer to be very irksome and rude I can't imagine how the author feels, especially as this author is great about updating every week give or take a few days. Not that it would be alright to make such demands even if the author only updates every few months.

I don't mind reviews saying update soon, but don't ask me for a day, Life is too hectic for me to commit to a deadline, and if I did, that would kill some of the joy in writing.

I never write 'Update', if I review. Perhaps if there has been several months, I can ask if she/he has given up on the story, or something like that. I think it's rude to demand that they finish the story on five minutes.

I try to leave detailed reviews instead of just 'Update soon'. But I do usually put that somewhere in the review unless I know the author is having real life issues.

Geesh, when I saw this I thought thhe purge was back but it was just the CU and others being their normal selves. I can understand that people are mad about this but the music business is even more controlling of their copyrights then others. I have never been a fan of songfics so I can't really say anything about them. What I do know is thhat I always end up scratching my head whhen people write the entire lyrics to a song for a chapter in a fic. I know that the song most likely inspired the author for that chapter but by just posting the name of the track and where to find it would save people a ton of grief.
What I am happy about is that the purge has seemed to slow to a draw in the last month or so. It seems that ff.net became majorly scared of the reactions that follwed the purge to the point they made a blog/twitter account all of the sudden. They said that this was to help with reporting problems with the site but it is more so they have a better idea how pissed people become with them. The sites updates are also something they broke down to sweeten up with their fanbase after betraying us by indiscriminately deleteing fics that had been on the site for years without protest. I do agree that some of the fics on the site were utterly disgusting and did not deserve to be on a public site but the way ff.net carried it out was maddening.

I don't review everything I read, but if I do, I try to write proper reviews. No "update, update!" reviews. The most I do in that regard is to tell the author that I look forward to more or can't wait for the next chapter, but I'd never outright demand updates, it feels all wrong. The authors write in their free time, after all, it's not as if I pay them for it and have the right to demand more.
There's only one where I sometimes whine a bit if we can pretend that today is the day x already and the next update due, but that's because I know he's writing far ahead and reliably updating on the always same days of the week. Besides, we are in private contact as well and he knows how it is meant - and that he only has himself to blame, as we call him the 'Master of the Evil Cliffie' for a reason ;D
Cody, I'm not going to say anything about songfics, as I don't read them anyway, but that bit about FFN is rather interesting. Would serve them right to realise that they are driving their customers/fans away with how they are acting. Maybe they think about what they are doing a bit more.

Eh, maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid Kitty, but that is how I see ff.net "attempts" to be closer with it's users.
Rigt now though I am slightly bummed about the complete revamp of a fic I have been reading. I hate when an author gets 1-2 reviews criticizing how a story doesn't compare with another "similar" fic and decide to blindly repost a story with the bare plot and some character personalities being the only things that are similar before. It is kind of stupid when you have a 1,000+ reviews and after being told by one guy your fic can't compare with another you change it when 80% of your fans love it.
Sorry about the rant but I'm really disappointed in this author for doing this when it was such a good fic beforehand.

It certainly appeals to my cynical sight of the site.
Now that's really silly. Whenever you publish something, no matter if fanfiction, books, movies, you simply can't please everyone. I could understand revamping a story if all (numerous) reviews were negative, but when only one or two out of many disagree, it is stupid. I guess some need a thicker skin.

I know what you mean. The story beforehand was very well done with it being both a light-heated comedy and action sprinkled here or there to appease the fans. Now it as thhe main character being angst ridden and the overall feel of the story became stilted and not as flowing as it was before. Yes there were some 100 dumb reviews stating they just hated the author's stories but only two reviews made him revamp it because of baseless blabber about how the story followed canon to much and there was no background to the characters. It was a story from pokemaster12 called Ashikabi No Shinobi that even though it was a harem, it was still good between the character interactions and comedy but now since the revamp it just seems stilted in it's flow. In the first incarnation you could almost feel pokemaster12 putting his heart into and not trying to hard or forcing it out, now it just seems like there is no soul to it anymore.

Really sad. From how you describe it, the first version was really much better. What a pity that he listened to the wrong people. And if it's now so forced, it will probably end up abandoned sooner or later.
Hm, the name sounds familiar *goes to check her bookmarks* Indeed, I was following his HP story, which means he was at least a decent author, but it seems that one was victim to the purge, too.

I think that people that demand reviews are kind of low on self-esteem?? (I thought about asking for reviews... but I knew that I couldn't wait that long to upload another chapter )

I love getting reviews myself. Not just "Great story." - that's not a proper review; but real reviews where it's clear that the reviewer has read the actual story and has been touched by it in some way. That's why I only write reviews like that myself. And why I can't stand people who are demanding reviews. You can't go around demanding something like that.
If your story touched your readers, and meant something to them, your readers will want to tell you so. Demanding one just doesn't make sense to me.

I never outright ask for reviews. Sometimes if I'm not certain of how something worked out or I wish to know what people think of a certain character showing up, I'll ask in an A/N, but I never demand reviews.
Like many of you, I tend not to review if asked outright to do so. Reviews are a gift to the author and as such, they shouldn't be demanded and forced out. I generally review most of the stories I read, but sometimes I simply don't have the time.

That makes sense to me.
While I understand that an author wants to have reviews as a sort of 'thank you' for writing and as a feedback how the story looks to others, to me there are differences in how they go about it. Just a 'please review', I have no problem with. But to held the next chapter hostage to get more reviews is a sure way for me to turn my back on it.

I review if I'm following a story. If I'm just browsing, I don't review especially if the story is old.
