I've always felt it was the responsibilty of the parents to ensure that their children read or watched the programming that was appropriate for their age, so I'm firmly in the Don't like, don't read camp. It's one of the reasons I hate morons like the people from CU, or the admins from FF.net, who are nothing but bullies.

I don't know how it is in the US, but I remember a case years ago when some teenager got a rather adult comic from the library, and the parents then blamed the library for giving it to him and made a big ballyhoo in the press and had the city council involved and all. The end of the uproar war that it was *their* responsibility to control what their kids read, and that it's not the job of the library to control what they check out. That's the legal situation here. And I'd think for reading on the internet the same should be true.

Yeah, stuff like that happens.
I don't know too much about public school libraries, but I have heard that for the most part, students can only check out books that are in their grade section of the library. While this might keep some students from reading books they shouldn't, it puts a major hamper on other students who are more advanced readers.
I do think it's the parents' responsibility to keep track of what their children read. Strictly at first, then gradually back up until it's just the random 'so what are you reading now' question.

The school libraries here I know aren't separated by grade beyond children/teenager for fiction and children/teenage to adult for the non-fiction. That latter is sorted by content only - you'll find all maths books together, all books about cars, about horses etc. And the age separation is more to spare the older ones having to dig through first grade explanations when they are 15, or the younger ones being overtaxed with books they don't understand. They just find easier what they need. But no one would complain about them getting something less age-appropriate. As you said, some are very advanced readers, and others aren't.
Agreed on the reading control. But sadly, it's getting more and more common that both parents work, use the TV as babysitter and then expect the teachers to raise their children and teach them manners and keep them under control when they themselves can't.

Heads up all! I was just on Wattpad and RtBs are disappearing from there now. The author of "Seven Books and a Letter" was really upset because she lost lots of work. If anyone has that one saved please let me know and I can contact her about it so she can relax. I warned her about ffn and CU and directed her here as well.

Guys, I'm furious! My fic was deleted last night, finally the best thing is, it wasn't deleted for being a rtb story, it was deleted because it was a non- story?

Huh? How is a RtB a non-story? *scratches head* What did these people smoke before they came online to report you?
I'm beginning to think I should back up even my non-RtB favourites, just in case ...
Anyway, I am sorry for you, but at least you were warned and could make sure you had everything saved. The ones who went first didn't have that luck ...

So... The Fanfiction is having a even tighter rein. What's gonna be left, when they're finished? Except badly done stories where the world is perfect.

You have to wonder if these bullies plan on ruining all fanfiction, bit by bit? Or if in the end only these are left that no one save them is going to read, because it's forbidden to mention anything they don't like, but makes the story fun for others?
It's going to be just another step away from FFN for me. At that rate, I am losing interest in the site altogether.

Well, I think it's gonna end like that. I'm still on ff.net, mainly because there is still stories I like to read. I just read them for as long I can.

It takes all the fun out of the site, isn't it? Who knows if FFN is even realising what they do. As far as I can tell, they are the biggest archive on the net, but at that rate, that might change - and not for the better, as mainly good stories are targeted. They are really confirming all the prejudices I have had since my first attempt to read stories there.
Oh well, the Cu can't keep me from playing with my own story, at least ... maybe I'll manage to continue that one if they keep taking away everything that's worthwhile and I don't have anything to read any more.

I know of several people who have moved their stories to archiveofourown.org/Is it possible if this website plays its cards right it could be the new big fan fiction website?

Yeah, and the waiting list when I applied said not until November at the least :/ I have no idea why they are doing that because with all the bad blood with FFnet at the moment now is the time for another site to strike and possibly gain popularity. Having a waiting list is not helpful in making their site more popular.

I think they don't have enough admin to staff the requests, or their servers can't take all the new joiners. Either way, I went to Yourfanfiction instead to keep my stories updated somewhere.
