Hey all, I just heard about this from the Champions Reading FB page and was wondering if it is true. Here is the message and I really hope that it is just a rumor.
As I said before, this appears to only be a rumor but there is no telling if this proves to be true in the end.

I really really hope that is not true. I would also hope if they were going to do something like that they would warn authors beforehand so they could backup their work.

I just noticed this on the main page of FFnet which is a worry
June 4th, 2012 -- Notices: ◦Please note we would like to clarify the content policy we have in place since 2002. FanFiction.Net follows the Fiction Rating system ranging from Fiction K to Fiction M. Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002 has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range. Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.

*sigh* Something tells me that a second shit storm is brewing... The question i want to know is why would FFnet care. As long as the story is properly marked who is it hurting if there is a story with explicit sexual content. Maybe FFnet could come up with a specific rating for stories with a high sexual content so people who don't want to read it can easily avoid those stories.

I just don't see ff.net going around and deleting half of their fic archive. That is a horrible business move to undertake.

Business suicide, more likely. It certainly would be another reason for me to stay away from the site. They are increasingly ruining fanfiction for me. Hm, I thought M was allowed, just the MA was a problem? If so, then it would be really strange to delete all M without any warning whatsoever. If that is really true, then I am beginning to wondr about their sanity. No, I hope it's not true, but if it is ... really don't know what to say. The question i want to know is why would FFnet care. As long as the story is properly marked who is it hurting if there is a story with explicit sexual content. Maybe FFnet could come up with a specific rating for stories with a high sexual content so people who don't want to read it can easily avoid those stories. The default setting is only going up to T anyway, so you have to consciously allow the M rated stuff. I guess if it's true, the problem are the prudes who think the world ends when they see even the word sex. Anything further than a kiss is too explicit for them. The sensible thing would be to allow MA, but demand they give their age to read them (and probably M), and only allow adults into these stories. Of course people can lie about their birth date, but then FFN would be in the clear, as far as I know. But that would still allow people to have access to sex stories, so certain people can't have that. It's really getting ridiculous. As an adult, I feel insulted by the way they try to limit my reading to kindergarten level.

I don't see it either, but this is still the sign of an oncoming shit storm. If this rumor is spread far enough, this can only cause problems.

Eh, I sent ff.net an email with the quote just without the middle paragraph in it. Hopefully they send me back an email or dispel the rumor on their homepage.

Good of you, though I'd not count on it. They aren't famous for getting back to questions on these things.

Actually given the way they are acting, I can see them doing away with the M rating all together, I don't like it but it is the way they are cracking down it seems that might be the next step.
*sigh* Just learned one my favorite stories, Author is a member of CU Critics United.... Only good thing or rather not so good they have not updated the story in ages *pouts*
But also I think this be like third storm or something like that....

Looks like I'm going to go over my favourites and saving some more, though I think I already backed up the M stories together with the RtB ones.
*sigh* I guess I'm going to follow the last few stories I am reading there till they are complete and then I'll give up on FFN if they actually go through with it. I'm beyond fed up.

What is FFnet's business model? Where do they get their money from and how badly would it be affected if they suddenly find 30% fewer people going to their website?

They get some of their money through the adverts that are on the site. Other then that I do not know.

Well, if FFN wants to screw themselves over, that's fine. Then again, this is all a rumor and we don't know for sure. Now that I think about it, getting worked up over it won't do any good. Still, saving your favorites might be a good idea.

Definitely. Whatever the truth is, I want to thank codygotkilld for the warning. Maybe it's not true, but *if* it is, we all can at least save our favourite stories, and keep an eye out which ones might move elsewhere etc.

Perhaps we could save most of the old, old stories that are on FFN - especially those that haven't been completed - the author either abandoned the story or just plain disappeared.
Perhaps we could upload them to other fanfiction sites so that we can still read them - if they're going to do another "book burning" thing.
The Purge reminds me of book burning and witch burning. It's a blasphemy of the written word in my opinion.

Not sure that would be legal - after all, they are not our stories. Saving them for ourselves to read, yes. Uploading them elsewhere without explicit consent from the author, no.

Luckily for me most of my favorite stories are K-T with a few M here or there. I will have to go through my favorite authors tomorrow to see if there are any M stories worth note to save. I am really hoping that this just turns out to be someone from tumblr trying to stir things up...

Mine are mostly K-T as well. I think. I haven't checked them since I saved them all. Never bothered to check the rating though.

Same here. Most would probably be safe, and usually I save only my absolute favourites. But with things as they are now, I am inclined to save even stuff I would usually never save. I might want to re-read them one day, after all ...

I did a search of the lemons and song fics on ff.net there was over 200,000 of them not including other MA content. Add other adult themes and it really isn't a smart move.

recon it will be The Random Fic Pinky?

Nice big number. To kick them all off would be a lot of work - and make *such* a great impression.
But then, who said that they were smart? It's not a compliment I'd ever make them. Just did a little search - out of the 130,055 English HP stories, a total of 33,524 are M-rated. That would be more than a quarter of the fandom gone. I wonder if they would actually be crazy enough to do that ... such a great way to destroy their own site.
On a side note, Phoenix, the text in your current avatar made me snicker! Great!

Not sure, Wings... not sure. It could be the Random Fic or maybe even the Time-Travel fic... who knows? =/
And Kitty, I don't think they're THAT dumb... at least I hope not.

One should expect they aren't that dumb, but who knows? I don't know what to think right now. Let's hope it was just a rumour and doesn't happen.

Agreed. I may be peeved at FFN, but I don't want to see it implode on itself. I doubt that would actually happen, but you never know...
