Disturbing thought..But maybe Ron's name on the map overlapped Peter's? At least at night...When they're sleeping. *twitch*
Although I doubt that's the case.

That means Peter would have been right on top of Ron... O.O
OH FUCKING MERLIN!

Ugh, now I really need Lockhart to obliviate me of that image!
Did Remus, after he confiscated the map, really never look at it until that fateful night?

Don't know, but you would think the inner Marauder in him would have woken up to see

My thoughts exactly. He knew that Harry knew ways out of the castle ... did he really never check?

That or it could be because of how all the adults in the Harry Potter books seem to have less sense then the children.

So very true, Cody~! Maybe it's both?

Post by codygotkilld on Jun 20, 2012 2:48:09 GMT -5
Yep, defintely both. The magic must have a numbing effect on the brain as a wizard/witch ages and cause them to slowly lose their common sense. We should have a study to see if this proves true.

I don't know...
I would say use the family of a muggleborn with two siblings, (one with and one without magic), but look how that turned out... *cough* Petunia *cough*

Yeah, I might have to sleep on it or start a new thread and ask why the adults act like idiots in the series. It just seems hard to believe that most of the adults had to rely on the children to do the dirty work while they sat on their asses wondering what they were going to do.

One of the many things that annoy me in the series... but hey, wizards are stupid!

Not only that. When I look at how many adults of the main characters were killed in comparison to the teenagers, I have to wonder. I mean, six teenagers could hold off 12 Death Eaters in the DoM, but when the Order arrived, Sirius got killed? All in all, Fred was the only younger one of them who died, but there were Tonks and Remus and Hestia Jones and god knows how many others. Including the final battle. As if the teenagers were the better fighters - despite having mostly useless teachers. Sometimes I really wonder ...
That has to be one of the reasons why so many fanfics have Albus insist that all the bad guys can be redeemed and they can't just kill them, or even take action because the time wasn't right. He prefered to leave his dirty work to Harry, after all. And the Ministry was useless - the ones who might have acted was probably Amelia, who got killed, and Kingsley, who listened too much to the old codger or was on the run himself ...

Agreed. The real thing would be rather frightening...
Back on to the Marauders topic... Anyone ever wonder what Remus and Peter's families were like?
|
|
|
Post by Kitty279 on Jun 20, 2012 3:32:17 GMT -5
Oh yes. Did Remus' parents support him, despite everything? And how were Peter's parents, seeing how their son turned out? His mother got that posthumous Order of Merlin for him after he "died" in 1981 - how would she have felt when she learned the truth? (IF she did, that is, seeing how the Ministry probably swept everything under the carpet) (And btw, if I ever get to write my story, that Order is *so* going to be rescinded!)

No, he certainly doesn't. And neither did Fudge - being elected Minister despite being an idiot doesn't merit an Order!

So, I was reading, and I just began to wonder...
I thought that the map showed the names of someone who was moving and teachers, otherwise would it not get overcrowded with tiny little dots? Is this just something I made up in my head? because if that is the case, than lazy ass Peter probably never moved enough.
As for Remus's parents, he said in sixth that they were pretty supportive, but his extended family wanted nothing to do with him. Peter... Another unanswered question.

Can't remember it saying that only moving people are shown, though admittedly, mostly they are watching the dots move. But I took that to mean that always a lot of people will be running around in a school full of energetic teenagers. But you are right, if the map shows only moving dots, then Peter would never show up ... save he's in Ron's pocket.
Ah, thanks - still have read HBP only once through, and not very attentively.

That's a good point. I always wondered how that map worked. Maybe it only shows moving people or the map would show everyone overlapping. Maybe Peter's name was there all along but everybody was in denial or something. It wouldn't surprise me.

I think the map only shows people that are moving - otherwise, that map would be pretty full and it'd be hard to read - can you imagine when a group of people were in a room and you'd just have all the dots crowded in but the names would end up overlapping or something? I think the Marauders just wanted to know who was on the move so they could avoid teachers and prefects and the head boy and girl when they were on patrol at night, things like that. It's the only explanation I can think of for Peter not being seen on the map. After all, all he seems to do is lounge around in the dorm. The most moving he seems to do is moving from Ron's bed to Harry's. (Oh man, that sounds so wrong.)

There might actually be some merit to that idea- looking at the chapter where the Map is first introduced, the only names Harry notes on it are Dumbledore, Mrs.Norris and Peeves, all of which are moving at the time as well. There's no mention of anyone else, including Harry and the twins. And then there's this bit- He pulled out the map again and saw to his astonishment, that a new ink figure had appeared upon it, labeled 'Harry Potter'. This figure was standing exactly where the real Harry was standing, about halfway down the third-floor corridor. That seems to indicate that the dot of Harry only appeared on the Map after Harry moved out of the room where Fred and George gave him the Map.

Huh. That's interesting! It'd make sense. I'm sure Peter didn't move much until Crookshanks came in the picture.
